🏡 Honoring Black History Month: Melnea Cass 🏡 St. Francis House is proud to celebrate #BlackHistoryMonth by recognizing influential Black leaders who have shaped Boston’s housing landscape. Our first spotlight is on Melnea Cass (1896–1978), a tireless advocate for Roxbury’s Black community and a champion for housing justice. Known as the "First Lady of Roxbury," Melnea dedicated her life to civil rights and community organizing, serving as a key leader in the Boston NAACP and fighting for #equitablehousing policies. Her impact endures, with streets and buildings named in her honor, a testament to her lifelong commitment to social justice. As we continue working toward a future where everyone has a safe place to call home, we draw inspiration from Melnea Cass’s unwavering dedication. Stay tuned throughout the month as we highlight more Black leaders who have shaped Boston’s housing landscape!

📊 Boston conducted its 45th annual Homelessness Census last night, and St. Francis House joined forces with the Massachusetts State Police, Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program, and Pine Street Inn for the annual point-in-time (PIT) count. This important effort provides a snapshot of homelessness in our community and helps inform crucial decisions about funding and resources. With #homelessness in Greater Boston rising 67% from 2023 to 2024 (Boston Indicators), the need for accessible community support is more urgent than ever. By surveying the city together, we deepen our understanding of the needs of those experiencing homelessness — part of our commitment to creating a path toward stability for every individual. Thank you to the MSP, BHCHP, Pine Street, and our #SFH staff for coming together to make a difference in our community!

Friday night, the St. Francis House team gathered at Maggiano's Little Italy for the annual Staff Appreciation Dinner — a small but heartfelt way to recognize the truly extraordinary people who power our mission. In the face of a growing #homelessness crisis and dangerously cold temperatures, this team shows up with unwavering compassion, resilience, and determination. They are the heart of #StFrancisHouse, making it possible to extend care and kindness to 10,000 individuals annually, and we are deeply grateful for their efforts. Amid our shelter #renovation, the theme of "rebuilding" has defined their work — reflecting not only the transformation of our space but also the hope and renewal they bring to every guest. Join us in applauding our staff for their dedication and tireless service. We couldn’t do it without them! 👏💙

Our CEO, Karen LaFrazia, joined Rebuilding Together Boston and the HBI (Home Builders Institute) yesterday to discuss Building Resilient Futures, a new and exciting initiative. Supported by a $300,000 grant from Liberty Mutual Insurance’s inaugural Impact Driven Collaboration (IDC), this will provide #workforce training in sustainable home repair to individuals experiencing homelessness while addressing critical needs for low-income homeowners. We’re thrilled to join forces in creating opportunities and strengthening communities — time to get started! Explore the workforce services we currently provide on our website: https://bit.ly/3TTxYav

✨ Today, we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose words continue to inspire our work: "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." At St. Francis House, we see the impact of housing injustice every day. #Homelessness is not just the absence of a home — it is a systemic failure that perpetuates inequality and denies people the dignity and stability they deserve. On this MLK Jr. Day, we strive to reaffirm our commitment to fighting for justice by providing essential services, advocating for #affordablehousing, and empowering our guests to rebuild their lives. Let’s work together to create a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. 💙
