Our first spotlight is on Melnea Cass (1896–1978), a tireless advocate for Roxbury’s Black community and a champion for housing justice. Known as the "First Lady of Roxbury," Melnea dedicated her life to civil rights and community organizing, serving as a key leader in the Boston NAACP and fighting for #equitablehousing policies. Her impact endures, with streets and buildings named in her honor, a testament to her lifelong commitment to social justice. As we continue working toward a future where everyone has a safe place to call home, we draw inspiration from Melnea Cass’s unwavering dedication. Every day of the year, we enable individuals to meet their basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter. We transform lives using a holistic approach to understanding and addressing behavioral health, housing, and employment needs. We commit ourselves to helping those we serve achieve renewed lives of dignity and self-determination. St. Francis House is nonprofit and nonsectarian. Our mission and approach are simple: We believe in the worth of every human being, and we know from experience that when people have the right tools, change can happen. Big change. That’s why we provide our guests with everything they need to reclaim their dignity and rebuild their lives. We will ensure that we are doing the very best we can for those we serve by continuing to build a data-driven, outcomes-oriented culture that emphasizes the importance of continuous learning and growth. 📊 Boston conducted its 45th annual Homelessness Census last night, and St. Francis House joined forces with the Massachusetts State Police, Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program, and Pine Street Inn for the annual point-in-time (PIT) count. This important effort provides a snapshot of homelessness in our community and helps inform crucial decisions about funding and resources. With #homelessness in Greater Boston rising 67% from 2023 to 2024 (Boston Indicators), the need for accessible community support is more urgent than ever. By surveying the city together, we deepen our understanding of the needs of those experiencing homelessness — part of our commitment to creating a path toward stability for every individual. Friday night, the St. Francis House team gathered at Maggiano's Little Italy for the annual Staff Appreciation Dinner — a small but heartfelt way to recognize the truly extraordinary people who power our mission. In the face of a growing #homelessness crisis and dangerously cold temperatures, this team shows up with unwavering compassion, resilience, and determination. They are the heart of #StFrancisHouse, making it possible to extend care and kindness to 10,000 individuals annually, and we are deeply grateful for their efforts. Amid our shelter #renovation, the theme of "rebuilding" has defined their work — reflecting not only the transformation of our space but also the hope and renewal they bring to every guest.
