In honor of #NationalLibraryWeek, today's post features the Pasadena Central Library Seismic Retrofit & Renovations Project (project). Sapphos Environmental, Inc. is working with Gruen Associates and City of Pasadena in the preparation of the environmental documentation for the project located at 285 E Walnut Street. The Central Library is listed on the National Register of Historic Landmarks, and is part of the Pasadena Civic Center Historic District and of the 1925 Bennet Plan that was derived from the City Beautiful Movement based on a north-south, east-west axial orientation. The Central Library is a Mediterranean-style building that was designed by Myron Hunt and H.C. Chambers in 1924 and erected by 1927. The original 1927 building was expanded in the mid-1960s and historically sensitive renovations in the mid-1980s, and the library was officially closed as of May 3, 2021, due to seismic safety issues. Although several improvements and repairs have been made to the library over the decades, many of the building’s existing systems and components are original to the 1927 construction. The Pasadena Central Library is the City’s main public library which houses large collections of books and resources and serves as a destination for public access to equipment and services such as computers, Wi-Fi, high-speed internet, and an iLab. The project’s much needed renovations will bring the building back into compliance with applicable City building codes and ordinances.
