  • 🩸 Happy Phlebotomist Week! 🩸 During Black History Month and Phlebotomist Week (Feb. 10–14), the we honor individuals who make a lasting impact. Jailen Butler, inspired by his mother’s 16-year career as a phlebotomist, continues his family’s legacy by ensuring the safe collection of life-saving blood. As a child, Butler accompanied his mother to blood drives, witnessing her dedication. When the opportunity arose, he eagerly pursued a career in phlebotomy. His professionalism and compassion shine through, particularly when assisting donors. Butler is passionate about making first-time donors feel comfortable, believing a positive experience encourages continued donations. His commitment to the Red Cross mission drives him to grow in his role. See link in bio to schedule your blood donation appointment today. #PhlebotomistWeek Read his story here: https://rdcrss.org/3EJ9eO3.

  • Last month, Los Angeles communities faced catastrophe devastation from the Southern California Fires. While hundreds of Red Cross volunteers from around the country came to support our region, our LA disaster response volunteers stayed focused on helping local families affected by everyday emergencies, like home fires. On average, seven lives are lost daily to home fires, making them the most frequent disaster in the U.S. Thanks to our volunteers and donors, we continue providing relief, comfort and preparedness resources. Whether responding to wildfires or single-family home fires, the Red Cross is always ready to help. Join us by donating, volunteering, or preparing redrcross.org

  • “I always say it definitely fills my cup to overflowing and people are so grateful and so kind and so appreciative.” Hilary King of Marin County in Northern California raised her hand to help in disaster relief efforts for the Southern California Wildfire response. Hilary started with the Red Cross in 2017, volunteering in a disaster shelter and says she just never stopped. During “Blue Skies,” when not responding to a disaster, Hilary mentors new volunteers, helps out at community events, and even installs smoke alarms during the Red Cross “Sound the Alarm” campaign. But it’s her disaster work that really speaks to Hilary’s heart. "You just know that you’re really making a difference for the people that need us at the time. In their worst time, we can make it just a little bit better and let them focus on their recovery.” The Red Cross needs more people like Hilary King. • Angela Perez works to keep a positive attitude as she recovers at the American Red Cross shelter in Pasadena after losing her home to wildfires. “I'm staying strong for my family to find the best way to get back to our life before the fires,” Perez says. “I'm grateful to the Red Cross because they got me my medicine on the first day.” Angela has applied for financial assistance from the Red Cross. Meanwhile her two daughters, Violet and Domenica, spend time coloring and painting while they are at our shelter. “I started painting when I was 4, I want to be a painter,” says Violet. Hundreds of Red Cross responders remain on the ground in Southern California, providing food, shelter, emotional care and recovery planning for families impacted by wildfires.

  • 🚨 Update on Shelter Operations in Southern California 🚨 The American Red Cross is working with partners to locate a new shelter facility for residents currently at the Pasadena Convention Center. When the Red Cross took over management of the Pasadena shelter, the Civic Auditorium Complex requested that the facility be returned to the city shortly after the first week of February.  We understand shelter transitions can feel unexpected, but we want to assure you that these are carefully planned, and we will be posting the transition date as soon as those plans are solidified. The Red Cross will continue to have a congregate sheltering option until all the residents have a plan in place to get them to their next housing solution.

  • “People’s safe spaces have been lost,” said Tami Mitsumori Miller, Chief Clinical Officer for Foothill Family while working with Red Cross volunteers in the Sierra Madre community. The Foothill Family organization has been rooted in the area since 1926 and offers mental health and support services to the community. As part of our humanitarian efforts, The Red Cross works with community partners to identify recovery needs and develop plans to help people get back on their feet. Tami and her team have been helping our volunteers deliver cleanup supplies including personal protective equipment, water, and snacks to affected areas. These emergency supplies are essential to helping residents clean up their homes and properties as communities move forward with recovery.
