Developing the lowest cost and least complex fusion energy technology for the production of industrial heat and power.

About us

Realta Fusion is an early-stage spin-out from the University of Wisconsin-Madison developing the lowest capital and least complex path to commercially competitive fusion energy. We are applying advances in super-conducting materials, plasma physics, and computing power to a simple linear fusion reactor configuration. These advances allow for a much lower capex power plant, utilizing abundant fuel sources to provide a new, zero-carbon source of heat and power.

  • Every single person who sets themselves to the task of commercializing fusion energy in our lifetime shares at least one thing in common: moxie. If you live in the Midwest, you know there’s no better person to talk to about the moxie it takes to tackle big challenges than Kathleen Gallagher, Executive Director of the 5 Lakes Institute and host of NPR’s Midwest Moxie, a show about company founders who are taking big risks, disrupting the status quo, and driving economic growth in the region. Realta Fusion CEO Kieran Furlong recently had the honor of joining Kathleen to kick off Season 5 of Midwest Moxie, where they discussed what fusion is and how it works, the timeline and determination required to make it real, the technical and business challenges that need to be overcome, and why Wisconsin has what it takes to emerge as the home of commercial fusion in the United States. Give it a listen and let us know what you think!

Harnessing the same forces that power the sun to provide abundant, clean, and reliable energy down here on earth is pretty intense work. To create fusion energy, not only do we need to do some intense physics and engineering work to wrangle tricky plasmas, but we also need some equally intense 🖥️ computational power 🖥️ to prove what’s even possible. Realta Fusion had the honor of being selected in the inaugural Amazon Web Services (AWS) Compute for Climate Fellowship program in 2024, where we were given access to state-of-the-art tools and expertise that allowed us to essentially recreate a supercomputer in the cloud so we could run and test plasma simulations using thousands of processors, saving us significant time and money along the way. AWS Head of Climate Tech Lisbeth Kaufman recently joined the Stack Overflow podcast for a deep dive on the Compute for Climate Fellowship, including a helpful rundown on Realta Fusion’s work around the 9:50 mark. Come for the Realta mention, but stay for the whole thing – it’s worth every minute of your time.

It’s always a good day when you get a warm shoutout from the U.S. Secretary of Energy. Speaking from the stage of the 2025 ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Chris Wright mentioned Realta Fusion among a group of hard-charging fusioneers – including our industry peers Commonwealth Fusion Systems and Zap Energy – to once again remind the energy community that you can’t talk about energy abundance without talking about fusion energy, and that fusion’s time is just around the corner. "In the next few years and certainly in the next decade – I think much sooner than that – we’re going to see such significant advancements that the pathway to commercialization, to take this energy that we know how to harness now and make it commercial, that’s in the near future. That’s just crazy, crazy exciting." -U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright The U.S. Department of Energy is a critical enabler of the commercial fusion industry, and we’re “crazy, crazy excited” to partner with Secretary Wright to make fusion real in the next decade. #ARPAE25

It’s been a big week on Capitol Hill for the fusion community, and we’re keeping the momentum humming with this terrific Ignition Q&A with Realta Fusion CEO and Co-Founder Kieran Furlong. Give it a read and let us know what you think! TLDR: We’re talkin’… 👍 earning a social license to build fusion machines in your back yard 🖥️ the role fusion has to play in powering data centers and the AI revolution 🪞 the unique benefits of our magnetic mirror approach to fusion 💲 funding and markets and supply chains, oh my! 📈 lessons learned and next steps along our critical path A huge thank you to Rachael Zisk for igniting this conversation (see what we did there?) and helping us get the word out about the magnetic mirror!

  • A trip to Washington, DC at this particular moment may not be everyone’s idea of a good time, but we fusioneers are built different. This week we’re joining the who’s who in commercial fusion energy for the Fusion Industry Association's annual policy conference to talk some serious shop and heading to Capitol Hill to bang the drum for the magnetic mirror throughout the House and Senate. Despite these uncertain times, we’ve never been more certain that fusion’s moment is fast approaching and that we have what it takes to make it real.
