PSFC at MIT is a leading university research center for the study of plasma and fusion science and technology.
About us
Making clean and economical fusion energy available to our society is a grand challenge of 21st century science and engineering. The PSFC, along with global research partners, seeks to answer this challenge by exploring innovative ways to accelerate the pace of fusion’s development. The PSFC is an interdisciplinary research center because fusion requires an approach that folds in the majority of the engineering and science disciplines found at MIT: physics, nuclear science and engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry, and material science, to name a few. Our mission is to identify and understand how cutting-edge advances in science and technology can provide fusion energy “smaller and sooner”. The PSFC hosts a wide variety of experimental facilities at the Albany Street corridor on the campus of MIT including plasma devices, powerful superconductor magnets and high-energy accelerators. In parallel, novel measurements are developed for the very challenging fusion environment, which are then are compared to leading-edge theory and simulation. This research mission is completely integrated with the training and mentoring a new generation of multidisciplinary fusion scientists and engineers. All in all this makes the PSFC a vital and important contributor to the fusion energy mission.

Our latest article on materials for fusion energy is live! 'Long-term research and design strategies for fusion energy materials', is now available for download in Matter, a leading materials science journal. Read it at: https://lnkd.in/gruTCPP2 This was an exciting collaboration with Tonio Buonassisi, Mike Short, Dennis Whyte, Sara Ferry, Myles Stapelberg, and Zachary Hartwig, with visual design from Marta Barriga. Our article aims to be a useful resource for materials researchers looking to "venture" into fusion research. It highlights: • A fusion primer for the materials researcher, including a focus on materials and energy flows, and a description of some better-known and less-known materials challenges; • A timeline and description of select prototype reactors coming online in the next decade, potential onramps for materials innovations; • An "iterative co-evolution design" framework, which emphasizes meaningful transactions between materials researchers and fusion-plant designers, in the face of uncertainties in fusion reactor design, regulations, and markets. Thank you for MIT Proto Ventures and the Plasma Science and Fusion Center at MIT for supporting this work. We hope our paper serves as a helpful guide for those starting their fusion materials research journey. Your thoughts and comments on our article are highly welcomed and appreciated! #FusionResearch #MaterialScience #Innovation #AutonomousLabs #HighThroughputExperimentation #Collaboration #GettingStartedinFusion

I’m super excited that Rémi Delaporte-Mathurin got not one, but two awards at #FusionHPC workshop on the work of upgrading FESTIM to DOLFINx, the new interface of the FEniCS Project! Personally, I got involved in the rewrite in April, proposing some new ways for setting up the variational formulations. Since then, I’ve visited Remi Plasma Science and Fusion Center at MIT and we have made some very nice improvements to the next version of FESTIM!
📢 Great News! 📢 🏆 We are happy to announce the winners of the most Outstanding Presentations by Early Career Scientists at the 5th #FusionHPC Workshop, held on 21-22 November 2024: Jorge Suárez Recio Marianna Szambelan Rémi Delaporte-Mathurin Additionally, Rémi Delaporte-Mathurin has also won the Popular Vote for the best talk of the workshop! Congratulations to all the winners! 👏 📽️ Recordings of the presentations will be available soon.
