New partnership! Women’s Health research Collaborative (WHrC) announced its new initiative with Avana Health around Acute Heavy Menstrual Bleeding (HMB). Today’s Petauri Kinect 3-minute Executive Briefing topic is the Startling Growth of Illegal Online Pharmacies. The IQVIA Institute reported in 2023 that there were 15,501 Illegal Online Pharmacies (IOP’s), collectively selling approximately 85 million illegal prescriptions, with an estimated value of $34 billion. At the time of the study, these IOP’s were actively marketing 70% (5,085) of the 7,310 legally prescribed medicines dispensed to patients in the USA. The study reported that drugs sold through IOPs are estimated to create 10 times higher adverse event rates than drugs sold through legal pharmacies. These adverse events represent an estimated additional $67 billion dollars in direct healthcare costs for the U.S. healthcare system, in addition to the healthcare consequences for the patients who used them.
