Next up in our #GreetingsfromtheArsenal series, check out this post card from 1918. ✉️✉️ The St. Louis Arsenal became operational less than 30 years after the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. It quickly played a vital role in westward expansion, supplying Army and territorial militia west of the Mississippi River, as well as equipping westward expeditions to the Pacific. As necessary militia supplies headed west, they would have left through the Arsenal sallyport, seen here during excavations in 1918. ⛴

Happy #MLKDay from NGA! We've all heard of the Martin Luther King Jr. statue down the road from our NGA Washington location, but did you know that St. Louis has one of its own? Down the road from NGA's future home in St. Louis nestled in Fountain Park, you'll find this statue of MLK. Created by Rudolph Torrini, this statue captures MLK in the middle of an impassioned speech. NGA is proud to continue his commitment to civil rights, human dignity and equality today and every day. #NGAinSTL 📸 City of St. Louis

#OTD in 1961, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the National Security Council Intelligence Directive No. 8, establishing the National Photographic Interpretation Center, or NPIC. ✍️ As the Cold War heated up in the 1950s, the Iron Curtain generated many challenges for collecting intelligence. The success of the U-2 spy plane further highlighted the need for rapid photo interpretation. A joint report from 1960 recommended a new centralized office be created to unify photo exploitation capabilities across the intelligence community, and so NPIC was born out of the Central Intelligence Agency. This NGA predecessor agency laid the groundwork for future methods of imagery analysis. To celebrate, check out this vintage image of a typical NPIC workstation. #NGAinHistory
