About us
For 137 years, the ships built at Newport News Shipbuilding, like the American shipbuilders who built them, have served our nation in peace and war, in times of adversity and in times of abundance. Our legacy of “Always Good Ships,” includes the design, construction, overhaul and repair of more than 800 ships for the U.S. Navy and commercial customers. Today, Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII, is the nation’s sole designer, builder and refueler of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and one of only two shipyards capable of designing and building nuclear- powered submarines. We also provide fleet services for naval ships. We are the largest industrial employer in Virginia, employing more than 25,000 people, many of whom are third- and fourth-generation shipbuilders.

Every day and in every corner of our shipyard, Newport News shipbuilders work to deliver the nuclear-powered U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and submarines that defend our freedom. To help showcase these shipbuilders and the work they do, we’re reviving our Hot Shots photo series. In celebration of Hot Shots’ return, this edition features iconic photos from years past.

#ThrowbackThursday to March 2000 when Newport News shipbuilders lifted the lower bow into place on USS Ronald Reagan (#CVN76). Thank you to the team that achieved this milestone 25 years ago. Did you know? CVN 76 was the first U.S. Navy aircraft carrier to have this type of bulbous bow.
