There are more than 7,000 public transit agencies in the U.S. (and many more private agencies), and together, they are responsible for serving 60 billion passenger miles each year. A well-functioning transit system fosters the growth and expansion of businesses, distributes social and economic benefits, and links the capabilities of community members, thereby enhancing what they can accomplish as a society. Since affordable public transit service is the backbone of many communities, we recently collaborated on a research article that investigates ways in which Artificial Intelligence (AI) can improve efficiency and increase utilization. Our research team at Vanderbilt is making continual progress on building new capabilities.
Vanderbilt University was awarded $890,000 from the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development’s (TNECD) inaugural Transportation Network Growth Opportunity (TNGO) Mobility and Automotive Discovery Grants. The TNGO initiative aims to position Tennessee as a top destination for automotive and mobility research by connecting statewide research assets, communities, and talent. As part of the $2.9 million awarded in the first round, Vanderbilt will lead a project using advanced LiDAR sensors to address traffic-related fatalities in Clarksville, collaborating with local institutions and agencies. Additionally, Vanderbilt is a key partner in two other projects focused on AI optimization for school bus routes and designing a multimodal transit system for Blue Oval City. Vanderbilt’s involvement underscores its leadership in mobility research and the broader mission to make Tennessee a hub for innovative transportation solutions. These projects, led by professors Dan Work and Abhishek Dubey, demonstrate the university's commitment to applying advanced technologies like AI and mobile LiDAR to enhance public safety and operational efficiency. Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee emphasized the importance of these initiatives in supporting the state’s mobility supply chain and advancing economic growth. TNECD officials also highlighted the potential for these grants to drive public-private partnerships and spur further innovation across Tennessee’s automotive and transportation sectors. Abhishek Dubey's SmartTransit lab was recently represented at the 2024 International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence held in Jeju Island, South Korea. David Rogers and Sophie Pavia presented two papers on behalf of the team, as well as another paper by Dr. Taylor Johnson. The SmartTransit System: Revolutionizing Public Transportation The SmartTransit operations system is a modular on-demand public transportation routing system that addresses the growing need for efficient and flexible transit solutions. Designed to enhance both microtransit and paratransit services, SmartTransit integrates advanced vehicle routing algorithms into the daily operations of transit agencies. These algorithms are capable of handling varying objectives and constraints, making the system adaptable to different operational environments. One of the key features of SmartTransit is its comprehensive management software, which includes tools for dispatchers as well as mobile applications for both drivers and clients. The system has been rigorously tested and validated in Chattanooga, TN, through separate microtransit and paratransit pilots. Vanderbilt University researchers have developed an innovative software system incorporating artificial intelligence that aims to improve the efficiency of public transportation for individuals with special needs. The research, led by Abhishek Dubey, associate professor of computer science and electrical and computer engineering, will be presented in a paper at the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI) in August. In the paper, Dubey and his team discuss their work with the Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) that started in 2020 to improve the operation of its paratransit service, a critical component of traditional transit services that offers door-to-door assistance for people who face challenges using standard transit routes.
