  • In our diversity we find strength, beauty and perspective. In our unity we find peace, empathy and potential. As Black History Month begins, we are honored to reflect on and remember the fundamentally important contributions Black Americans have made to our country, our culture and our continued growth as a nation.

  • The team at Mercy Health – Oak Point Primary Care makes sure that birthdays are more than just another day—they’re a reason to celebrate! Practice Manager Amy Schaechterle frequently hears “Happy Birthday” echoing from the front desk, as registrars and staff serenade patients who check in on their special day. “It happens more often than you’d think,” Amy shares. “Our team loves to create a moment of joy for patients. If someone’s celebrating their birthday, anyone available will join in to sing.” The celebration isn’t one-sided, either. Some patients have even surprised staff with cupcakes in return for the cheerful recognition. This simple act of kindness creates a welcoming, upbeat atmosphere and highlights the team’s commitment to making patients feel valued.

  • Congratulations to Gavin Werling, Alexis White, Jack Blankenship and William Huston. They are our newly hired interns in our first graduating class from our EMT internship program at Mercy Health -- Lima (Lima, Ohio). These students are now or will soon become certified as an Emergency Medical Technician by the State of Ohio and will contribute to the future service to our community at LACP/St. Rita’s! The EMT internship program is the result of a partnership with Mercy Health, Mercy Health Regional Transport (LACP), Allen County Job and Family Services and Apollo Career Center. It was conducted over a period of sixteen weeks and focused on classwork and clinical experience taking place at the Apollo Career Center and in clinical settings. The program was developed for LACP/St. Rita’s to improve the opportunities for community members to become EMT’s and eventually go on to additional schooling within Mercy Health. It is all about cultivating a skilled workforce for the future! One intern said, “What inspired me to choose this career was that I wanted to help people. My long-term goal as an EMT is to advance by getting my Advanced or Medic license.” Under the program, LACP/St. Rita’s hired four EMT interns and paid for them to go to EMT Basic school, while also training them in other areas of our operations, such as Dispatcher, Wheelchair provider and Mercy Express. “I have always wanted to do something positive and help others,” said one intern. “For myself, my career goal is to become a medic or possible go into nursing.” During their training, these interns learned about transportation and care of patients, how to determine the nature and extent of illness or injury, advanced life-saving skills including 12-lead EKG application and transmission, automatic external defibrillation and more. To become EMT’s, the interns complete written and practical examinations as well as clinical experience to become certified as Emergency Medical Technician’s by the State of Ohio. “This program paid for schooling and all the resources I could ask for to become an EMT,” said one graduate. “It was honestly a huge blessing for me.”

The shuttle service is free of charge for those who use it.

  • The Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley team (Youngstown, Ohio), as well as some of our Youngstown Market leadership team, recently visited the Sisters of the Humility of Mary and residents of Villa Maria for our annual Christmas program to spend time with the Sisters and celebrate the Christmas season. A recital was held in the Magnificat Chapel at the Villa, led by Foundation Grants Manager Candace Madden on the piano and Foundation President Paul Homick on the organ. The Sisters and the residents of the Villa joined in singing Advent and Christmas songs as well as listened to solo pieces played by both Candace and Paul. Following the recital, the foundation team joined the Sisters for dinner. It is always a joy to spend time with our foundresses.
