This Presidents' Day Week, our Founder Rita Zimmer shares the memory of her 1984 meeting with the late Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter: "They were sitting on the stoop of the Metro Baptist Church on West 40th Street eating vanilla ice cream cones, having finished their day as Habitat for Humanity volunteers. They were renovating a Lower East Side building into affordable apartments." https://lnkd.in/eS-CPHi9 A small group of us gathered around the President and talked about the growing need for affordable housing. In 1984, the year of his visit, there were 1200 homeless families in NYC. Forty years later there are more than 120,000. How thrilling it was to spend time with this extraordinary man. I was touched by his gentleness and kind manners, sitting on a church stoop talking "shop" and sharing stories. I wish I could tell Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter about our work building affordable housing, including Shepherd Glenmore opening soon."
About us
HousingPlus, Inc., founded in 2002, works to better the lives of homeless women and families by providing permanent and transitional housing with an array of services designed to aid and support their move from homelessness, devastating poverty and family fragmentation to stability, independence and family well-being. We start with where a woman is to build upon her strengths, asking from the first day, “What do you need to succeed?” At eight settings in Brooklyn and in Staten Island, we've designed a model to deliver comprehensive, integrated services in safe, home-like settings to foster a culture based on the core self-help principles of individual responsibility and mutual support.

We're proud to share this powerful story by PIX11's Vanessa Freeman. Our apartments in the Bronx give a place for women and gender-expansive people to get on their feet after leaving incarceration or detainment. This fall, we moved over 20 people into our new facility. Stay tuned as we keep working to fully open our program in the Bronx. Extended version here. https://lnkd.in/ezTNpWJR

"My apartment is literally the best," says Shadequa. Shadequa is a Marine Corps Veteran who returned from her deployments with serious mental health struggles. She eventually entered a homeless shelter. But since 2015, having a safe and secure place to call home has made all the difference for her. It has even provided Shadequa with the mental clarity she needed to complete her Master's degree in social work. She also serves on HousingPlus' Board. Hear more from Shadequa in her own words. https://lnkd.in/e8Aj3DSv As we prepare to turn the page on 2024, we want to extend our sincerest thanks and appreciation to you - our partner in this work - and we hope you will consider making a gift before midnight to help more tenants just like Shadequa. Thank you, and happy new year. https://lnkd.in/erc8Astj #inspiringstories #Veterans #resilience

Rita Zimmer, Founder of HousingPlus, has announced she is moving on. We have begun the search for our next determined leader, and are pleased to announce that the esteemed executive search firm Phillips Oppenheim will be leading the effort to identify a CEO. (See job posting link here: https://lnkd.in/ednc8zPy) HousingPlus is accelerating our growth and broadening our reach. Starting in January 2025, we will begin an expansion project that will add close to 500 new housing units —more than doubling the number of apartments in our portfolio; allowing for secure and stable housing and comprehensive services for many more community members. As Rita reflects on her time and immeasurable accomplishments, she shared these heartfelt words “Forever, in my heart, I will do whatever I am asked to carry on the vision of HousingPlus.”
