  • August 6, 2024 was a normal day until a NAPA Autoparts employee fell victim to a sudden cardiac arrest - his heart stopped beating. Thanks to three bystanders, an emergency that could have been tragic had the best possible outcome. Last night, we honored these three coworkers who saved the life of Bruce Mikesell at our annual awards ceremony. This story exemplifies how important bystanders are in emergency situations. These three employees enacted the step by step proccess of "the chain of survival". They perfectly played a crucial role in assisting first responders in applying first aid before our teams arrive on scene. In these scenarios, almost anything helps. Not sure what to do? Call 911 and an operator will work you through exactly what to do. Doing something is better than nothing. If you really want to be prepared, attend a CPR training class to be ready in a situation you hopefully never come across. Be ready in case and emergency happens. Vist the American Heart Association or the Red Cross websites to learn more about CPR classes near you. ❤️

  • Earlier this month our Fire Department's Hazardous Materials team geared up for Hazmat Training. The team sequenced, from start to finish, an emergency response to a broken container releasing a very toxic chemical. Although scenarios like these are low in frequency, the risk they pose to our community is high. Through modern technology, quick and strategic thinking and regular training, our teams are prepared to protect Des Moines in any emergency.
