All the education in the world doesn't compare to stepping into someone else's shoes and experiencing life from their viewpoint. As a BCBA, I always involved parents in the ABA process. We worked out the child's goals together, discussed progress and how they could follow through at home to ensure consistency. But then I became a parent. All of a sudden my eyes were opened to what it means to shoulder the responsibility for every aspect of a little human's growth and development. I learned to appreciate what the parents I worked with were experiencing form a whole new angle. I started adjusting my expectations and asks. ABA exercises need to be manageable, fitting seamlessly into their lives without becoming a burden or another chore. As a BCBA, I needed to show them more compassion and understanding, being flexible when necessary. I believe my parenting journey has hugely impacted my journey as a BCBA and now COO and clinical director. I hope my clients feel the difference. The past few days have been intense in the field of ABA—for reasons that, frankly, are disappointing. First, when we built Akoya Behavioral Health, we prioritized systems that work for clinicians, not the other way around. I’ve spent nearly a decade working with a particular software that I promised we’d avoid—only to see it acquired in a staggering $1.6 billion deal this weekend. I genuinely can’t understand how a platform that has caused so much frustration for clinicians (myself included) is worth that price tag. Meanwhile, Hi Rasmus has exceeded every expectation, proving that innovation and efficiency do exist in our field. Second, the BACB’s decision to remove descriptions and efforts centered around DEI is beyond concerning. Our work is rooted in supporting neurodiverse individuals and ensuring equitable opportunities in the field. DEI isn’t just a buzzword—it’s essential to ethical, effective, and inclusive practice. Why step away from that commitment? Despite these setbacks, I remain confident in what we’re building: a program grounded in clinical excellence, supported by technology that actually enhances our work, and unwavering in our commitment to DEI. We will continue to push for a future where clinicians and the individuals we serve are truly supported. “Do you need a chair? Someone get him a chair! Sir are you ok?” The day my son was born was one of the most amazing, but by far scariest days, of my entire life. The nurse had offered me a chair, having seen the panic in my eyes. I stood there shaking as the realization crashed into me that my life would never be the same again. The enormity of the responsibility that was about to land on my shoulders hit me and I sank into the proffered chair feeling horribly unprepared. Years later, I still don't feel prepared for every situation that I will encounter throughout my children's lives, BUT I have made a choice: I will give everything I have to help my kids be successful in school. I will teach them everything I know about how to treat other people. I will do everything I can to set them up for success in life. And I feel the same way about the children I have the privilege of working with. We can't anticipate every situation or challenging behavior we'll encounter from our clients, but we can commit to doing everything we can to set them up for success. I strive to take the knowledge I have learned through my education and ABA experience, the lessons I have learned as a parent, and the experiences I have gained from over two decades of working with children, to support other parents who are feeling ill-prepared along their parenting journeys, working together to give their children the best chance possible. #Akoya #ABA #parenting
