  • A new patient survey conducted by West Health and Gallup has found that more than 31 million Americans borrowed $74 billion last year to cover medical debt. "Borrowing rates varied significantly by age and demographic group. Younger adults were hit the hardest, with nearly one in five (18%) of those aged 18-29 borrowing money to cover medical costs," writes Medical Economics Assistant Editor Austin Littrell. Other findings from the survey ... 📢 28% of survey respondents were “very concerned” that a major health event could throw them into debt 📢 52% of Americans age 65-years-old and older still worry about medical debt that could happen as a result of a major health event. 📢Women, especially those age 50- to 64-years-old, were more likely to take on medical debt compared to men 📢Among the patients who borrowed money to cover medical debt, 58% borrowed, at least, $500 and 41% borrowed $1,000 or more According to the survey authors, "It is clear that high health care costs continue to burden the American people, and financial insecurity around care is not limited to any one demographic." • After analyzing nearly 80,000 primary care practices, researchers at Columbia University School of Nursing found that the number of nurse practitioners (NPs) employed by primary care groups more than doubled between 2012 and 2023. Another key insight from the study: Primary care practices that employed NPs were more likely to be located in low-income and rural areas compared to practices without NPs on staff. "The findings underscore the industry’s growing reliance on NPs to address gaps in primary care availability, particularly in underserved areas, amidst the ongoing primary care shortage," writes Medical Economics Assistant Editor Austin Littrell. • According to an American Medical Association (AMA) survey of 1,000 physicians, nearly one in three report that prior authorization criteria are rarely or never evidence-based.
