Bringing bio-innovations from the lab to commercial relevance.
About us
At ABPDU, our passion for bio-innovation drives us. Our goal is to expedite the commercialization of advanced, next-generation biofuels and bioproducts by providing industry-scale test beds. The Department of Energy’s Bioenergy Technologies Office established the ABPDU as part of the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab in 2009. We’ve been operational since 2012, collaborating with researchers in the bio-products industry, the national labs, and academia to optimize and scale technologies to enable the commercialization of bio-based chemicals, materials, and fuels.

For the first time, researchers have combined nanodiamonds in microdroplets of liquid for quantum sensing. The new technique lets researchers detect trace amounts of certain ions and molecules and has several potential applications, including for tuning the self-driving bioreactors of the future. “You can envision setting up bioreactors in austere environments around the world or in space, to make things like food that you couldn’t deliver on a daily basis,” said ABPDU director Deepti Tanjore. “Having precise quantum sensors that tell you how the microorganism culture is behaving is an important step toward that dream. To build a self-regulating bioreactor, we need that real-time intracellular data.” Read more about this research: https://lnkd.in/g7YBNB9J Learn how ABPDU researchers are planning to advance the future of self-driving bioreactors equipped with quantum sensors: https://lnkd.in/gX-q9peN #QuantumSensing #nanodiamonds #microfluidics #bioreactor #biomanufacturing Biosciences Area at Berkeley Lab Berkeley Lab Zachary Jones

Had so much fun at Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts Process Development Unit (ABPDU) working with the ABEC 300L fermentation system! My team (Raniah, Celeste, Thomas, Clyde) and I gained practical skills in bioprocess operations, learning the ins and outs of large-scale fermentation through process monitoring, aseptic techniques, and system preparation. Every step brought new insights—navigating the HMI, monitoring process conditions, ensuring sterility through bioburden sampling, and so much more! ✨ Grateful for the opportunity to apply what I’ve learned in a real-world pilot setting and experience the process of scaling up fermentation.

Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts Process Development Unit (ABPDU) reposted this
This Fall, I had the opportunity of interning at the Berkeley Lab Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts Process Development Unit (ABPDU) through the Department of Energy's Community College Internships (CCI) program. As an intern, I created a prototype system for a robotic arm to autonomously detect and handle test tubes. Here, I was able to familiarize myself with Python libraries OpenCV and PyTorch for image processing and deep learning. To implement the computer vision system, I designed and 3D-printed a custom mount for a standard webcam, attaching it to the arm’s end effector. I then trained the open-source object detection model (YOLOv8 by Ultralytics) on a custom dataset for it to recognize test tubes, and interfaced these detections with the arm’s robotic control software. While this project has helped me learn more about creating and training AI models, computer vision, and robotics, I hope to continue to improve upon these skills in future projects. As we transition into the new year, I’m reflecting on this amazing experience and am grateful for those who helped me succeed. I’d like to thank my mentor Dupeng Liu, Ph.D. for the chance to work on such an exciting project, guiding me throughout the internship, and advocating for reaching my goals. I’d also like to thank the Berkeley Lab Workforce Development & Education, the ABPDU team, and my fellow interns for the valuable support when I needed it. Last but not least, I'd like to thank my Skyline College professors Marco Wehrfritz and Kolo Wamba for helping me in the process leading up to this.
