The first step might surprise you: don’t rush to meet the demand immediately. When facing a surge in demand, the instinct is often to react quickly—but rushing can lead to hiring in desperation, which creates long-term inefficiencies. Instead, it’s always better to be slightly overstaffed than underprepared. Why? Because an under-resourced team compromises quality and creates burnout, while being overstaffed positions you to handle demand smoothly and scale sustainably. At Tilak Stone Arts, we focus on exponential growth, not linear. When we forecast demand spikes, we hire 3–4 team members proactively, ensuring we’re ahead of the curve. The takeaway: Plan ahead. Overstaffed means prepared. Understaffed means overwhelmed.

We bring in temp help. I have a young lady who is an excellent trainer. Those who take instruction from a woman are ususlly good workers. Those who won't work under her are sent home. That keeps a good work force. We also have a hard and fast rule on safety equipment. The first time they are told to get the equipment on. The second time they are immediately sent home. Employees have seen me step in and take the job till the agency can get me another person. Another advantage of a temp agency. All saftey equipment is around metal equipment and is eye protection. We have production quotas and bonuses so good workers on the line are appreciated by others.

That's not your real problem. Your real challenge is that you didn't plan for success. Scaling is about building systems that anticipate them. The time to think about handling 10,000 orders isn't when they arrive. Smart scaling means asking: • What breaks at 500 customers? • What needs delegation at 1,000? • Which systems need automation at 10,000? You must Pre-decide (I may have made that up): • Who you hire at each growth stage • Which processes you'll need to redesign • Where automation will replace manual work • What your org chart looks like at 2x, 5x, 10x current size When you plan for growth, "too much business" becomes simply the next planned phase of your journey.

I do not use the term "surge pricing" but that is essentially the method used. I give pricing for a specific time period (next week, for example, when I know the demand is slow) and make it clear that the price will be significantly higher "in season". That serves as a strong fair way to manage workflow and demand.

In order to assist in the increased workload, I recommended that temporary staff be hired. Making sure that your permanent staff isn't overworked can help maintain quality. The third step is to automate repetitive tasks whenever possible. This can ensure that quality is maintained by freeing up employees to concentrate on more important areas of your business.
