The media is driven by clicks and eyeballs. They provide what people want to hear instead of what they need to know. Accuracy and information is what we should be getting by the unbiased reporting of facts. The media has become a major source of the problem instead of being part of the solution.

In terms of inequality, it is my belief that the media has widened the gap between the haves and the have-nots, both in terms of images and narrative. The human brain is unable to distinguish between media content and reality. This can lead to dangerous assumptions when there is only one side of the story presented. However, social media has recently facilitated the emergence of a multitude of narratives, perspectives, and forms of expression. The diverse range of stories and voices has helped to remind us of the rich tapestry of human experience and the value of role models who are more representative of the world we live in.

I am a huge advocate of media produced by locals and natives of a particular community. This allows a true and factual representation. You find that in most cases media production entities only visit certain areas in times of crisis or abnormal events to take images that depict the area in that particular state. Taking images of everyday things and people is the best if not the only way to showcase your environment in its true essence.

When media producers from outside your community control the narrative, they might miss the nuance and richness of your local culture. This can result in a one-dimensional portrayal that overlooks the successes and positive aspects of your community. I truly believe that this is the most important reason why our local stories must be told and produced by locals. The media is a tool of communication around the entire globe, by not telling your local story through it as a media producer you are failing to take control of the narrative and the global perception of your community.

I deeply empathize with this idea, especially as an African man in the modern society. The media has played a huge role, not just geologically but culturally and ethnically. The way the media used to portray black people in films, magazines and radio across the board was not the best. This has left a scar in the black community. It has left us with an unbearable task of unlearning many stereotypes and superstitions about our kind that were enforced by the media. This matter is one of high importance in media production.
