I have a pug who lost his hind end mobility to a neurological disorder and used a wheel cart for a few years. Seeing the wheelie pug in this book was so refreshing. I love that the illustrator even made sure the pug had boots or socks on, which is important to protect paws from injury due to dragging.
This book also depicted a pup with one eye, as well as a service dog. The representation of humans and pups in this book is diverse and well done.
The text is a bit clunky and not terribly creative, which isn't all that uncommon for a board book. While the story itself is pretty mediocre, the illustrations are worth spending some time with.
It's pretty rare to see dogs with disabilities shown in a book that isn't specifically highlighting the disability. I loved that this one showed at least two dogs with visible disabilities who were just enjoying the day with their families. I hope it inspires readers to see that dogs with disabilities can absolutely thrive and have quality of life when cared for by a loving family. ...more
