This brief fairytale retelling was pretty standard. Nothing about it really stood out to me as being any more memorable than other retellings.

Though both POVs are in 1st (something I don't personally care for), the writing always makes clear whose POV we're in, so I was never confused. This story is very clearly written. Setting and characters are solid and easily tracked and understood. The pacing was another great element of this novella. Nothing ever felt too slow or too fast.

I didn't care much for the over reliance on "I," "my," and filtering, but it's otherwise technically sound. I also didn't care too much for the emphasis on love as a "feeling" that popped up a couple times. The ending romantic scene I also didn't care for (there's nothing overly scandalous about it, I just don't care to read scenes that lean heavily into the ooey-gooey-feely stuff. 🙄)

If you can't get enough of fairytale retellings, really like romance or first person POV, you'll likely enjoy this.

I absolutely devoured this Snow Queen retelling. I’m not even sure if I’ve ever read the original, but the story always intrigued me and I loved books and theater plays that were based on this fairy tale.

The added fantasy elements made this story unique as did the special relationship between Bianca and Percy - princess and her guard. I loved the characters and their strong friendship. They had such a special bond and their love story was so sweet. I loved how protective they were of each other. While Percy is kind, patient, loyal and humble, Bianca is more impulsive, but not any less caring.

I kept turning pages to see how they would finally meet again, but also because Bianca’s journey was full of suspense and I could definitely feel the frosty atmosphere. Triska was an amazing addition to the characters and she made me wonder about more stories from this world. I would definitely read another book set in this fantasy world.

Only the ending felt a bit anticlimactic. The “solution” seemed a bit too easy and sudden to me. I would have loved to learn a bit more about the Snow Queen’s history and motivation, since earlier chapters hinted at more of a backstory. She seemed to be wary and tired of her situation and the repetition each year, that she longed to be free from needing a new young man every year. But I never completely understood why she changed her ways through the centuries, what these men were giving her, what she wanted from them and so on. I also would have loved a whole scene where Percy and Bianca reunited. The build up to finally see each other in person after they acknowledged their love for each other … and then it just kind of happens without me even realizing it.

Like I said, I was absolutely captivated by the story and anticipated the ending for multiple reasons (being completely invested in the mystery surrounding the Snow Queen AND the love story). So this is probably why I would have preferred a more fleshed out ending. Maybe the last confrontation from the Snow Queen’s POV or a declaration of love scene even if Percy was still kind of numb after his heart was frozen by the Queen.

The story is written from a Christian perspective and mentions a Creator and His purpose for the characters. It includes themes such as selflessness, sacrifices, hope and trust and I enjoyed these Christian themes and faith messages woven into the story.

I absolutely enjoyed reading this Snow Queen retelling and am excited to read whatever Amanda writes next!

**A Frigid Hope: A Snow Queen Retelling by Amanda Thompson**

In the enchanting fantasy "A Frigid Hope: A Snow Queen Retelling," Amanda Thompson weaves a captivating tale set in the icy kingdom of Norland. Princess Bianca, the heir to the throne, is not only a symbol of nobility but also the bearer of a strong and hopeful heart. Her unwavering spirit is put to the test as she faces the malevolent Snow Queen, Kira, who wields black magic to freeze the entire kingdom of Norway. Each winter, Kira summons an unmarried man to her snow castle, returning them with a frozen heart, devoid of life and warmth.

The story is further enriched by the presence of Percival, Bianca's loyal guard and best friend. When Percival falls victim to Kira's curse, Bianca embarks on a perilous journey to save him and her homeland. Accompanying her is Triska, a pterolycan and steadfast companion, who adds an element of mythical wonder to the narrative.

Thompson's storytelling is both fast-paced and deeply engaging, drawing readers into a world where hope and courage are the ultimate weapons against darkness. The characters are well-developed, each with their unique strengths and vulnerabilities, making the tale resonate on a personal level. Bianca's determination and heart shine through, embodying the message that a strong heart is all one needs to combat the shadows of the world.

Beyond its thrilling plot and memorable characters, "A Frigid Hope" carries a profound mission. Amanda Thompson, along with other writers in the Hope Ever After series, dedicates the proceeds from this book to Operation Underground Rescue (O.U.R.), an organization committed to rescuing children from sexual exploitation and trafficking. This noble cause adds a layer of significance to the book, making it not just a tale of fantasy, but also a beacon of real-world hope and change.

"A Frigid Hope: A Snow Queen Retelling" is a beautiful blend of fantasy, adventure, and heartfelt emotion. It’s a must-read for those who enjoy clean, sweet fantasy stories with a powerful message. By diving into this book, readers not only embark on a magical journey but also contribute to a greater cause, proving that stories have the power to inspire and transform lives.

"A Frigid Hope: A Snow Queen Retelling" by Amanda Thompson is an enchanting novella set in the icy kingdom of Norland. This standalone story, part of the Hope Ever After series, offers a fresh and thrilling twist on the classic "Snow Queen" tale.

The story follows Crown Princess Bianca, who discovers that her best friend and personal guard, Percival, has been chosen to journey up the forbidden mountain to appease the Frozen Queen, Kira. Each year, the chosen man returns with a frozen heart, and Bianca is determined to save Percival from this fate. Bianca's fiery spirit and unwavering hope drive her on a perilous quest to rescue her friend and save her kingdom from endless winter.

The narrative is fast-paced and deeply engaging, drawing readers into a world where hope and courage are essential. Bianca is a resilient heroine whose determination shines through, while Percival’s loyalty and hidden love for Bianca add emotional depth to the story. Their special bond and the evolving love story between a princess and her guard are beautifully portrayed, adding layers of complexity and sweetness to the tale.

The characters are well-developed and relatable, making their journey and struggles resonate. Bianca's companion, Triska, a mythical pterolycan, adds a delightful touch of wonder to the tale. The Snow Queen, Kira, is a compelling antagonist whose backstory and motivations are intriguingly explored, though I wished for an even deeper dive into her history and the reasons behind her actions that was briefly explored at the beginning of the novella.

Themes of selflessness, sacrifice, hope, and trust are woven into the narrative, reflecting the story's Christian perspective. References to a Creator and His purpose for the characters add depth and resonance.

The story's suspenseful and frosty atmosphere kept me turning pages, eager to see how Bianca and Percival's story would unfold. However, the ending felt a bit anticlimactic. The resolution seemed too easy and sudden, leaving me wanting more about the Snow Queen's past and the reasoning behind her actions. She seemed to want free of the icy constraints that she had made for herself and further exploration as to why she wanted the men’s hearts to free herself, as suggested at at the start of the book, but then refused to relinquish her control at the ending would be beneficial.

Beyond its captivating plot and characters, "A Frigid Hope" carries a significant mission. The proceeds from this book support Operation Underground Rescue (O.U.R.), an organization dedicated to rescuing children from sexual exploitation and trafficking. This noble cause adds an extra layer of meaning to the novella, making it not just a fantasy story but also a beacon of real-world hope and change.

Overall, "A Frigid Hope" is a beautifully written, action-packed novella that delivers a heartfelt message of love, sacrifice, and resilience. Amanda Thompson must be commended for her debut novel - I absolutely enjoyed reading this Snow Queen retelling and am excited to read whatever Amanda writes next!

A Frigid Hope is a lovely story that showcases romance, friendship, hope, faith, and perseverance. This story is very close to the original while adding interesting fantasy elements. I was very fond of the additions. In the original, Gerda and Kai are the children of villagers. In this novel, we have Bianca, a princess, and Percy, her guard. I love a good princess and guard story.

In A Frigid Hope, Bianca is a princess with a slightly rebellious heart and loads of determination. She has a truly fiery spirit. A good trait to have with the trials she faces. Percy is a sweetheart. He is so loyal to Bianca, even when magic is involved. He is kind and patient, the perfect complementary character for Bianca. Bianca’s companion was a neat addition. I would love to see more of this creature in the future. The Snow Queen was an interesting villain. I would have liked to learn more about about her and her ice castle, however, this is a novella and was well done for the number of pages.

The plot wrapped up nicely and made me intrigued to read more in this fairytale land. Maybe see a different kingdom or two. There was a satisfying conclusion and a happily ever after. Overall, A Frigid Hope was a sweet and loving novel perfect for a cold day. Thank you to Amanda Thompson for an ARC of A Frigid Hope!

This was a lovely little tale!

Ever year a single man is chosen to scale the Forbidden Mountain and present himself to the Frozen Queen. And each spring he returns a shell of himself with a seemingly frozen heart.

Princess Bianca must choose contenders for her future Prince Consort. The problem is no men have peeked her interest…that is…except her long time best friend—Percy—but she couldn’t imagine that becoming Prince Consort would be something he would want. And Percy…well…Percy has been inlove with the Princess for many years but can’t imagine that her or her parents would accept him as a contender. But as fate has it…Percy finds himself as the chosen…

Can Percy resist the Frozen Queen? Can Biance find a way to save him? And will the Frozen Queen finally be defeated and the Kingdom saved?

This Snow Queen retelling was completely unique and lovely. There was some angst and stress, but hope surrounded it and shined through. There were sweet and wonderful characters….especially some of the side characters. I really really enjoyed Triska who was such a unique and unexpected creature and Drew who I just found completely delightful!

So yep…if you enjoy a sweet story filled with the perfect mix of angst and hope! Magic and madness! A feisty princess and her best friend who has won her heart! You just need to give this little tale a read.

“Winter is a beautiful season and can be dangerous. This beautiful scene hides the danger and evil that lives in this place.”

I adore fairy tale retellings. It is fitting that as I sit down and relax with this book, my kids are watching Frozen. This cover is absolutely breathtaking. I loved curling up with this frozen romantasy. The characters had depth and I loved the royal and best friends aspects. There was both a family and friendship feel to this book. Our hero and heroine both had strong hearts and a love borne of friendship and proximity. I loved that the deeper we got into the story the more depth, history, and fantasy we encountered. I was pushing off my mom responsibilities and letting the kids stay up just 5 minutes later so I could flip some more pages. I was totally engaged and engrossed in this story. I’m excited for more from this author.

Cool fact about this series: The proceeds from this multi author series are donated to the O.U.R. (Operation Underground Rescue) to rescue children from sexual exploitation and trafficking.

I received an ARC of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I was captivated and drawn in to this frozen kingdom and its inhabitants, first by the beautiful cover, then by the wonderful storytelling.

I’m not familiar with the Snow Queen fairytale, but that didn’t affect my enjoyment of this tale.

Princess Bianca and Percy have been friends since childhood. When everyone else saw Bianca’s fiery and independent personality as unbecoming, Percy saw it as beautiful. Their connection runs deeply and it’s that connection that helps them overcome the Frozen Queen and break her hold on their forever frozen kingdom.

Bianca is strong and determined. Determined to traverse the frozen wilderness alone to the Frozen Queen’s palace to save her best friend before it’s too late. Percy has a strong and faithful heart. Can he hold out for his love Bianca or will the Frozen Queen turn his heart to ice?

I adored Triska. She was a perfect side kick and added humor with her interactions with Bianca.

I loved the family bonds and the Christian themes pointing towards the Creator and His will. Putting their hope and trust in Him.

A fantastical frozen adventure that had me engaged until the end.

The "Hope Ever After" series is a collection of twenty hopeful and uplifting fairy tale retellings. Each book is written by a different author so it can be enjoyed in any order. The proceeds from this series are donated to the O.U.R. (Operation Underground Railroad) to rescue children from exploitation and trafficking.

I received a complimentary copy, but a positive review was not required.

A Frigid Hope is such a great book! It was definitely different from other Snow Queen retellings I've read and it was so emotional I honestly felt like crying at some parts (which is something I rarely experience). At the beginning of the book, Amanda Thompson thanked the readers for taking a chance on an "unknown author" and I have to say that if this is the first book she's ever written / published, I'm impressed! It was incredibly well written and the plot was well thought out and well structured. Bianca was such a great character with a fiery heart and determination. I loved Percy so much and the romance between them was great. I really think that the Crystal Heart was such a great idea and I loved Triska and the pterolycans.
This was definitely a great book and one of my favourite Snow Queen retellings. I can't wait to read The Caring and the Cursed or Amanda's new fairy tale series, The Fairy Tales of Ambrose.

ARC Review⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Can one princess find hope before her best friend’s heart is turned to ice? I have been loving a good fairytale retelling! This is part of a series called the Hope Ever After. The great thing about this series is that the proceeds from this series are donated to the OUR (Operation Underground Rescue) whose mission is to rescue children from exploitation and trafficking. What a worthy cause. There are 20 books in the series all written by different authors and all stand alone. The best part of this book… she saves him!!

This is part of the Hope Ever After series, a collection of twenty hopeful and uplifting fairy tale retellings and this is based on The Snow Queen. A well written and captivating novella as we follow Princess Bianca and Percy who grew up together and have been friends forever. Their world is turned upside down when Percy finds the mark that makes him this year’s sacrifice to try and appease the frozen queen. Bianca is strong, fierce and loyal and Percy is resilient and is in love with Bianca! The author does a great job of luring you in and holding on tight as the adventure continues and Bianca fights to save Percy from a frozen heart. Wonderful world building, exciting and enthralling storyline told with the authors take and characters that are likeable, well some of them, and having you hoping they get a hea!

The Snow Queen has cursed Norland to an eternal winter.
Each year, she selects an unwed man to come to her castle, and when he returns, his heart is cold as ice, and he has no emotion.
Princess Bianca is devastated when her best friend and guard, Percy, is selected.
Bianca sets out to rescue him and defeat the Snow Queen.
Along the way, she gains a new winged wolf companion named Triska.
Percy is trying his jardest to resist the Snow Queen's magic, but slowly starts to forget his loved ones as his heart ices over.
I loved Bianca's character. She is sweet and passionate. She refuses to marry anyone who treats her with disrespect.
Percy is a loyal friend and guard who hides his true feelings for Bianca for too long.
This is a sweet friends to lovers story. It was a quick but enjoyable read. I think this story would be a really cute movie.

I could not stop thinking about this book!
A Frigid Hope by Amanda Thompson puts a spin on the well-known tale, The Snow Queen, in quite a few ways. I loved how Bianca and Percival grew up together and slowly realized their feelings at different stages.
Some parts of the storyline felt a little rushed and there were places where it felt more "tell" than "show," but it was all minor things at the beginning and the story really smoothed out as it raced closer to the climax.
Amanda did a great job showing Bianca's dislike for one of her suitors (and Percival's agreement with this feeling). I enjoyed the different take on how the Snow Queen works and the small hope that keeps the kingdom warm through the long winters.
Her world building is gentle, not sudden, and I really want to explore more of the world we got a taste of in this sweet novella.
Thank you to Amanda Thompson for the chance to be an ARC reader for this novella! All thoughts are my own.

Sweet!!! Sweet!!! Sweet!!! What an adorable story (well...apart from the evilness and obnoxious nobles!). I loved it!

The characters are all likable well, with two exceptions! The setting was beautifully written. I love how the author chose to start the story with the main characters as children, I loved the prologue.

This is the authors first book and I feel she did an awesome job with this story I thought it was really creative and written beautifully. I can't wait to read what comes along next!

If you're looking for a sweet and simple fairytale retelling, give this one a try! My favorite part was the winter setting as it very hot wherr I am so it was nice to read about somewhere cold! I also enjoyed the pterolycans (winged wolves). I wasn't able to love it as much as I've loved the rest of the series but this is a debut author so I'm excited to see more books from her! I would have liked a little more polish and a little more showing and less telling. Thr book is also written in present tense which I dislike but that's just a personal preference.

A Frigid Hope is such a cute, sweet novella, with no spice sweet romance. I haven't read many Snow Queen retellings, but I could tell Amanda Thompson has it in a unique way with a beautiful message of hope like rest of the other books in Hope Ever After series. I did like this book. The characters and world building were intriguing and the author painted a beautiful setting. I really liked watching Bianca and Percy grow through their journey and find their happily ever after. At some points the dialogue became a bit repetitive however it wasn’t a big issue for me. The ending was sweet and happy. All in all a nice fairytale read!

A frigid hope is a clean, adventurous retelling of The Snow Queen. Readers are still able to find the connection to the source material. The romance in this tale is sweet being based on a lifetime of friendship. I really enjoyed the magic the author created in the story, and would love to know more about a certain creature in this tale.

A land cursed to have an eternal winter, a princess determined to save her best friend, and a royal guard that is willing to sacrifice himself to save the woman he loves.
This is a short but wonderful retelling of the snow queen.
Thompson kept beloved aspects of the original tale while also making it her own.
I look forward to reading more by her and in this fairy tale world.

Warm tale

This was a nice fairytale. The only thing I didn't like so much was when they called Laelynn a fairytale godmother. It just sounded kind of weird for this book. Other than that, it was an interesting and fun read. I still like my happily ever afters ♡

A Frigid Hope was captivating retelling of the Snow Queen. This novella easily capture my attention with its enthralling plot that I read this in one day! I needed to read how Bianca and Percy’s story unfolded. This story was fast paced, but did not skip on detail. Bianca was an admirable character with her steadfast heart. She was fierce force of nature when it comes to protecting the ones she cares most about. I loved loyal and unwavering Percy. He loved Bianca for her strong heart and intelligence when others wanted her to be weak and compliant. The message of hope was strong with both characters having strong hearts that stayed resilient in ordered to combat the evil lurking the kingdom. The Frozen Queen was a complicated antagonist. I loved that we got a tiny peek into her mind. It helped to understand her character and what had motivated her actions. Triska was hilarious with her sassy attitude. The romance was sweet with only a few kisses. This was a wonderful story and recommend!

I volunteered to read an ARC copy of the book and all thoughts are my own.

I found this book very hard to read, which was disappointing because it looked like I would have loved it based on the blurb. It was told in present tense, which is difficult for me, but I could have managed if it were just that. Unfortunately, the writing felt very clumsy, with all "telling" and almost no "showing". There were also quite a few times when the book just said the character asks a question, rather than giving dialogue.
An example:

I try to distract her by asking how today has gone for her and if the ball is starting out how she wants.
“It’s going well; I am happy with this evening so far.”

...It just seemed like the author was kind of avoiding dialogue.

And finally, the author appeared to be scared of using contraction in a fantasy book. It may have just been to sound more historical, but contractions have actually been around for centuries, so there's nothing wrong with using them in a book that takes place that far in the past, especially since it's fantasy.

The book could have been better, especially with such a good plot, but the writing just didn't work.

❄️ A Frigid Hope is a Snow Queen Retelling that's a little darker & edgier, staying true to the original fairytale by Hans Christian Anderson & is laden with rich moral symbolism throughout.

🏔️ Amanda Thompson did an amazing job building Bianca's world..From the depth of the family relationships to the dynamics of court intrigue, her characters are all wonderfully illustrated & truly brought to life..This is one of those books you could easily see as a movie!

🖤 The ice queen was a complex
antagonist with a tragic past which led to her own heart being darkened..Her cruel disposition made her a force to be reckoned with and this classic battle of good versus evil was exhilarating to watch play out!

🐾 Triska the Pterolycan; a winged wolf hailing from ancient German Russian & Hungarian folklore, was such a cool addition to the plot that took me by surprise! Her presence brought a sense of wonderment to the story.

🏔️ I thought Bianca was very relatable, being the type of girl who was always told she was "too much"..and I loved how Percy was the only one who truly understood & loved her for who she was!

💙 Percy's steadfast heart belonged to Bianca since they were children, so the way he watched over her even though she didn't belong to him was tense in the best kind of way! His unwavering devotion to her was endearing, swoony & wholesome.

❄️ "A Frigid Hope, a retelling of the Snow Queen, is a standalone novella, complete with tropes like he falls first and friends to lovers. 🤍 This is one of the best Snow Queen Retellings I've ever read, it was so fast paced & immersive that I read it in one day!

I really loved this & highly recommend it!
