A long over due commission for a pet portrait card! We decided to do this one in watercolor now that I have good paints and paper, but I'm still not ready to take watercolor commissions. I feel like I need to become more familiar with the medium before that. Watercolor once was my primary medium, back in my earliest days of art school! But boy howdy, there is MUCH to learn about working with these paints that I didn't know back then.

I'd actually advise not using bristol paper, I used it for YEARS with watercolor and I could never get it to cooperate like real actual watercolor paper. It's not a bad cheap alternative, but you can't abuse the paper as much as you can with watercolor specific stuff. Even after stretching, it tends to thin and buckle as you paint.
After sketching, this took me maybe three or four hours to paint? Including the time to let layers dry as needed.

Yeah i was thinking the bristol paper sounds pretty... silly but ive never tried as was told lol! Yea, you can defently abuse water-color paper!
Sounds appropreiate, i have a hard time walking away from the art to let it dry before doing another layer. Do you sketch on a differn't piece of paper and then put that sketch on the water-color? I do this because sketching on water-color paper and editing it, doesn't make a good end result.
Sorry if im bugging ya! Just curious :)

I don't mind! With this one, I sketched it in my sketchbook, edited as needed/desired by the customer in Photoshop, printed and transferred onto the final piece of watercolor paper for painting. I imagine I'll not scan and digitally edit every sketch, but it was more convenient to make the sketch edits digitally to send back to the customer than it was to alter it in my sketchbook and rescan it.
I think it's wonderful to see you producing something outside of your element...even if it was once your primary medium. You did a beautiful job and I am noting your advice regarding paper. I've been trying to work with watercolors and struggle with the control of details. X3
Again, really refreshing to see a different medium than the usual. Still definitely identifiable as 'yours' when it comes to style. <3

I like this, but there isn't much I can say that hasn't already been said. Is good! I'm just picking up watercolor pencils, so if you don't mind, a couple of questions:
How did you handle the highlights on the whiskers and the eyes?
For the finer details, is there any more to it than the right paper, a steady hand, and an appropriately sized brush?
