That reminds me.
I need to practice.

It just seems hopeless every time I pick up a pencil.
I can't seem to concentrate on a single drawing long enough to give myself a chance.

Probably all that TV I watched as a kid.

Happy to remind you!! Practice is always great. And what's even better than practicing is experimenting. Just fooling around with different ideas until you feel satisfied with what you're doing. If I were you, I'd start off with drawing something really basic. Like a single character, or an animal, or an object. It can be really basic- it can be a shoulders-up kind of picture too! If you like it, keep going! That's the beauty behind it. I'll let you in on a lil secret, I'm never satisfied with my eyes. Each picture, my eyes look different in. And how I draw my spooge is different too. I'm never fully satisfied with how I draw my liquids, so I'll keep changing it till I like what Ive got. ;)

I'll need to start at the most basic of basic.

My drawings always seem to devolve into middle-schoolish doodles of "heavy metal skulls" and 3 dimensional shapes

I guess it's back to circles and triangles for me until I learn how to draw a smooth line

First two months of college was exactly that for me.
