I like to create this sort of distressing by applying a high-contrast, rough B&W texture to the layer mask of the top layer. It works really well for type, too, and makes for a more unique distressing pattern on the type rather than using pre-distressed fonts which will repeat the same patterns on the same letters each time.

Also another tip: if you use the eraser or brush on the layer mask rather than on the layer itself, you can always go back in and change it or modify it (or remove it entirely), without affecting the layer you spent time painting. Nondestructive editing FTW! :>

Bit a necromancy reply, but my brother actually just got done explaining what he was going to do as far as painting a miniature he's working on, and he uses much this same idea, only with alcohol and paint thinners to get those sort of effects when he airbrushes.
