Ponyville is © of My Little Pony, friendship is magic.
Butterquill looked around. Before her stood Ponyville, the most widely known town in all of Equestria - courtesy of the six ponies who on a couple of occasions saved it from evil. Needless to say, Butterquill was sure she’d enjoy her time here. Having moved out of her tiny town and deciding to seek residence elsewhere, her first choice was somewhere in Ponyville, somewhere out of the way and not disruptive to others.
Now, the first thing she needed was to find a contractor and get that settled before the end of the day. Looking about her for shops, she found one that had a plank across it, reading “plank and son’s contracting.” Smiling at her easily achieved success, she entered.
A bell tinkled to alert her presence to those behind the counter. A tall grey stallion poked his large head around a corner and smiled humbly. Very gentle looking for such a large creature. “Hi!” He said, “What can I help you with?”
“Well, I’d like to purchase a house.”
“Ok!” The man said, then pulled a contract out of a folder nearby with his teeth, laying it down gently on the table between them. After pushing a pen her way, he suddenly seemed to have forgotten something. Then he remembered.
“Oh! I’m sorry, I didn’t do a couple things.” He looked embarrassed.
“I’m Speckles Highoof, but you can call me Specks.” He said through an embarrassed grin. “AND, what form of payment have you decided on? Cash or credit?” The embarrassed grin was still there.
Butterquill giggled. “That’s ok Mr. Highoof,” the man composed himself with a relaxed smile, “I actually have the money here,” she reached back to her backpack and pulled it off her back, lying it down on the table. “There should be enough for a two room house, if my rate readings were accurate.” Speck nosed the pack open, then nodded.
“Ok then. Looks like it’s enough. I’ll leave you to sign here,” he pointed with his large nose to a dotted line, “and I’ll get the workers ready.” He said, shoulder the pack and walking to the back room.
Within a good view of Ponyville, Butterquill looked at the foundation being build of her future house. She turned to Mr. Highoof, who was standing nearby and smiled.
“Thank you Mr. Highoof. I can’t believe I’m actually going to live here soon.”
“We’ll all be delighted to have a new citizen, Ms. Quill.”
Butterquill smiled. She liked Specks.
Walking out of town, Butterquill started to make her way home. She had done what she came for. Tomorrow she’d start bringing her possessions to her new home. “Um, excuse me, Ms. Quill.”
Butterquill whirled around to see Specks standing there. “Specks.” She said, looking a little confused.
“I, I couldn’t help but wonder, how do you plan on moving in? Where do you live exactly?”
“I,” Butterquill said, looking down for a second, then admitted, “I live in the library in the next town. Author-hoof publications.”
The man raised an eyebrow. “Hmm,” he disregarded a comment towards her living quarters, which wasn’t his business anyway, but had to say something about Ms. Quill doing all the work herself. “I’m afraid I can’t let you move all by yourself. We could find some people to help you move if you wanted.”
“Oh, that’s alright, thank you, I don’t have very many things to bring.”
Specks looked like he wanted to agree, but also held to a different standard at the same time. As such, his face looked a little torn, but his furrowed brow spoke of which side in the argument was winning in his mind.
He shook his head. “If anything, I have to help you. A little lady like yourself can’t do everything BY yourself. It’s just not lady-like.”
“What did you have in mind?” Butterquill asked.
“Well,” Speck said, looking like he was thinking, “I know a few people like I said who could help you. I could have you meet them today if you want.”
“Um, well, thank you.” Butterquill said, apparently not used to this kind of hospitality.
The two ponies walked through Ponyville. There was some silence for awhile before Specks asked, “So, how far is it to your home from here?”
“It’s only an hour or so walk. I have enough money to buy some food for the road.”
Specks got the same torn look on his face. “Would you, um, feel better if you stayed here for the night? That’s an awfully long way to drag all your stuff, much less travel.”
“Oh, well,” Butterquill hadn’t thought about it much, apparently. “I, um,” then she snapped, “I don’t see what all the fuss is about anyway.” Her eyes darted uncertainly between Specks and the ground.
Specks paused, looking at Butterquill inquisitively, then spoke. “I can’t stand to see someone who needs something done, trying to do it all herself, that’s all. A good friend of mine found that out once, but not without paying a pretty high price for it.”
Butterquill understood what Specks meant, but was intrigued as to who this friend was. “Who was it?” She asked.
Specks smiled. “I’ll have to introduce you to her. Her name is Applejack.”
