Diving missions are usually carried out by a team of three: a machinist who handles the calibration and operation of the submarine, an operator who controls the mechanical arms to explore and retrieve ancient wreckage from the ocean floor, and an engineer who takes care of repairs and fixes mechanical issues before, during, and after each dive. This engineer is often the submarine’s captain, thanks to their deep knowledge of the vessel.

However, being a diver is still a very risky job. Any malfunction can lead to catastrophic consequences—such as the submarine imploding under extreme pressure, engine failure, or toxic leaks into the cabin. In the best-case scenario, the team will have to return to the surface for repairs, losing an entire day of work without pay. In the worst-case scenario, a submarine that explodes or becomes stranded on the ocean floor is considered lost, and its crew is presumed dead instantly—whether that’s actually the case or not.
