Maybe all it really took for Theodore to notice Rob was the connection with his son.
After which he saw Rob's diligence and work ethics.
Even requesting he talks to his existing boss before setting the start date shows integrity in that he is not leaving his old boss in the lurch.

OK.. I have just read the comic start to finish. So Rob has had his resume in for a while. And Theodore has put 2 + 2 together and realised Who Rob is.
Probably something like "Roberto.. Roberto.. where have I seen that name.." And dug up the resume.
Now that Rob is not just a name on an application but someone he can see and make a valuation on it makes hiring him a Lot easier..
Worst thing is hiring and taking a risk on an unknown... to having a good background on the hiree and making a good choice.
Of course Rob is not out of the water yet... but with hard work and diligence he will go far.

I'm getting a lot of deal with the devil vibes from Theodore. Maybe I'm too naive, but I hope this is actually Theodore trying to do a good thing for a hard working and very stressed horse, instead of a power play (Or maybe theodore is his uncle's wife's cousin's sister's brother and he's helping the family). That being said, buck dad certainly knows how to get all the attention in the room, I'm sure that's useful when arguing cases.
Yah I can't shake the feeling that the job could turn into leverage over Roberto. He could pull the "stop dating my son or I will fire you leaving your school and immigration status in question". It may be a double edged sword. He cant say no really its what he needs, but if its bad it may be too late to back out once he says yes.
