Recently, I came across a YouTube video that detailed the long and challenging journey developers working at Big Red Button went through creating Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric. The game exploration, combat, and puzzle solving really doesn't fit Sonic and his friends "Got to Go Fast" gameplay mentality, but you know who does? Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters from Sonic Satam.
Sally Acorn, in particular, could thrive in a game emphasizing tactical exploration and problem-solving. Her intelligence and leadership could be utilized to navigate levels, uncover secrets, and rescue captive Mobians. Such a concept would also give the Freedom Fighters more depth and time to shine, potentially creating a more balanced mix of action, puzzle-solving, and narrative.
Alas, with Sega's notorious mandates and the disdain Sonic purists has toward us old SatAM fans, it seems like such a game is unlikely. For now, we can only look to various individuals who keep the spirit of Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters alive through literature, art, and fan animations.
