In this timeline, Lion populations in Europe weren't driven to extinction from excessive hunting and habitat displacement. Thus, lion populations remained stable and even expanded into regions like Serbia, Dardania, and Albania.
However, as the Balkans became more urbanised, lions were displaced into small pockets in usually mountainous areas comprising of only one or a few prides. Nowadays, most subspecies of lions in the Balkans and Anatolia are protected by national governments in mountainous reserves and hunting of lions is banned in countries like Bulgaria, Thrace, and Greece.
Lions have centered themselves in Balkan culture as symbols of strength and courage and are the national animal of several countries in the Balkans like Bulgaria, Macedonia, and Montenegro.
Other countries like the Muslim-Yugoslav Thrace, Eastern Latin Vlachia, and Armenian Cilicia in Anatolia also use these big cats to represent the hardy character of their nations.
