First chapters can be hard, and I tried a different structure with this one compared to my other stories. I originally planned on this just being a one shot but kind of fell in love with the characters. So, if people like it, I will happily continue this story while I continue to break out what I want to happen in my other stories.
As always comments mean the world to me and help me get an idea of what people like.
When You are Forced to Start Over
Chapter One
A story by Madneko23
“This is so stupid. I would be completely fine back at your apartment. Its not like I’m an actual kitten.”
Henry just rolled his eyes as he glanced over at the small orange kitten sitting in the passenger seat. The tiger still wasn’t entirely sure how to handle the situation. It had been several days since the kitten who appeared to be maybe three or four years old showed up soaking wet from an evening rainstorm. Henry’s first response had been to try and figure out where the young fur’s parents were, only to be berated by cries that the kitten was actually his best friend Elliot.
Despite a great deal of disbelief Henry had been persuaded that the kitten was in fact telling the truth. Elliot had little to offer on how his current predicament had transpired resulting in neither of the two having any idea on how to turn him back. Henry had done his best to get the very frantic kitten to calm down and settle. Although, as the days progressed it was becoming clear that something needed to be done to establish even a temporary living situation.
“Again, if your angry about your stupid table I already told you that it was an accident. Seriously if your stupid enough to buy a coffee table entirely made out of glass, I would argue that you’re the one in need of supervision.”
The tiger sighed placing the car into park as they reached their destination, a local daycare center. “Again, this has nothing to do with the table.” As Henry spoke it wasn’t entirely the truth. While he harbored no ill will or anger towards his friend, finding the kitten in a pile of glass did motivate him to create a more supervised environment. “We both agree that we need to figure something out and whatever we do its not going to help us if it gets out that I was leaving a child unsupervised in my apartment. Let’s just not risk another accident happening.”
“How would it get out? I don’t know why I keep having to bring up the fact I’m not an actual kitten.”
Looking at Elliot, Henry felt conflicted. On the one hand he did in fact know that his friend appeared to merely have been shrunk and was still himself. However, as he looked at the kitten who was clearly pouting in the passenger seat it was hard to see him as anything but a child in need of supervision.
“What is rule number one?”
Elliot slumped down into the car’s passenger seat crossing his arms. “Don’t let anyone know or think I’m not a normal kitten.”
“Good. And what’s rule number two?” Seeing the kitten turn away, Henry reached over gently placing his paw on Elliot’s shoulder. “Come on. We agreed on these together.”
“In order to follow rule one, I may have to act like I’m just a normal kitten.” The kitten then turned to look Henry in the eyes. “But rule two isn’t fair if you force me to do kiddie stuff. Plus, rule three is that you are supposed to always remember that I am actually an adult.”
“I wouldn’t dare forget it champ. Now come on. Stop acting like this is going to be some horrible ordeal. You can’t tell me that you would rather spend another day holed up in my apartment. Just think of this as your new job.”
Mention of it being his new job, made Eliot grumble. The fact being that the feline had been let go the prior month and so far despite his efforts was still unemployed.
“And just how long am I going to have to play pretend at this kiddie internment camp.”
“Hard to say while we figure this out, but I would say at least until I finally get all the glass out of my carpet.”
The kitten shot up straight clenching his paws. “See, I knew you were just angry about your stupid table.”
“Just a joke. I told you that I’m not angry. But I do have to go back to work, and I would rather not come home to find you hurt.”
Not getting a response from the kitten, Henry grabbed a bag from behind his seat and circled around to the other side of the car. Opening the door, he crouched down beside the kitten.
“I know that you have a lot feelings and this isn’t easy.”
“I’m fine.”
Henry wasn’t sure what to do for his friend. It seeming that he clearly needed some nurturing but the more he tried to console him, the more adamant Eliot was that he was an adult and that everything was fine.
“Okay if you say so. Now I know that this morning you said that you didn’t want to, but are you sure that it’s not a good idea to wear . . .”
Before the tiger could finish his sentence, Eliot cut him off waving his paws. “Why would you even bring that up? I told you that I’m fine.”
“Alright then. We agreed that it would be your call on that front.” Stepping back Henry stretched out his paw helping Eliot out of the car.
Begrudgingly the kitten started to walk with his friend across the parking lot. Henry and Elliot had met in undergrad quickly becoming best friends. This friendship had continued as they both graduated and went on to law school. As a result of the cat skipping several grades and the tiger taking a gap year, Eliot was actually several years younger than Henry. Because of the gap in their ages, Elliot had often at times felt like Henry was a much older brother. Now as he walked alongside the tiger these feelings were even more muddled.
The first day that Eliot had been staying with Henry, the tiger seemed to be treating the strange happening almost as medical condition. Still speaking to the kitten as if he was any other adult, however, as time seemed to be going on, Henry had started to develop an almost paternal attitude towards the kitten. The previous afternoon seemed to have been a breaking point as Henry rushed out of his office to find Elliot sitting dumbfounded in a pile of broken glass.
Despite the kitten’s exclamation that he was fine, Henry quickly had him up off the floor and was searching for injuries. What then followed was a long a speech about how the kitten needed to be more carful which Elliot found to be far too much like a lecture. Worse was the somewhat commanding tone the tiger had used when telling the kitten to just stay put while he cleaned up the glass.
As the pair entered the building Eliot was overwhelmed by the bright colors of the children’s themed decor. Along the walls were several murals that seemed fitting for a nursery as well as a very large sign behind the reception desk which read Happy Gables Day Care. The whole setting just made him wince. Gazing up at Henry with a very displeased look, the tiger just gave him a shrug herding him towards the counter.
Eliot soon noticed the very attractive female leopard that was sitting at the reception desk filling out paperwork. Much to the kitten’s displeasure he could visibly notice Henry zeroing in on the woman, seeming to get an almost swagger in his step. As the two approached the counter and were greeted, the tiger suavely set down his bag before pulling out his phone.
“Good morning, I have a reservation for one of us to be dropped off this morning but can’t seem to find the confirmation. Eliot, do you recall which one of us it was that is getting checked in?”
Rolling his eyes, the kitten just shrugged at Henry’s stupid comment. Worse was the way that the woman seemed to laugh. It was always the same whenever they went out. Somehow the tiger could say the stupidest lines and women just seemed to flock to him.
“I’m going to go out on a limb and say that its this little guy that will be spending the day with us.”
Eliot just cringed as Henry and the young woman began to chat. Having successfully tuned out the tiger, Eliot saw that both Henry and the woman were looking at him expectantly. Feeling oddly overwhelmed by the sudden attention the kitten couldn’t help but shyly shrink down. A moment later Henry had scooped him up into his arms.
“Hey there champ. No need worry.”
Taken aback by Henry’s paternal act Elliot just shrank into the tiger’s shoulder.
“Oh come on Ellie bear no need to be shy.” Henry said in a gentle voice as he seemed to rock the kitten.
“Sorry he usually isn’t this much of a shy guy.”
The leopard smiled as she tilted her head. “Oh I’m sure that he will come around. Hey there Elliot, I’m Chloe. I just need to snap a quick photo and you’ll be all set. Then you can go have some fun.”
The kitten gave as much of an assertive nod as he could. Trying to regain his composure as Henry set him down and the leopard positioned a web cam.
“All right we are all set. I will be right back and then we can get you started having fun.”
As soon as Chloe was out of ear shot, Elliot turned to the tiger giving him a seething glair. “What the hell was that?”
Henry smiled giving his friend’s head a happy pat. “Oh just keeping our cover. Also, when else am I going to get to try a single dad angle. You might be a better wingman now then when you are big.”
“Seriously?”
Despite Eliot’s clear frustration, the tiger just feigned a smile as if he had no idea what the problem was.
“What? You have to make the best of a situation. Even crazy ones like this.”
Before Elliot could respond, Chloe returned with a form asking for Henry’s signature. With the paper signed she placed it into a file before turning back to Henry.
“Alright we are all set. I will just take the little guy’s lunch for later in the day.”
Elliot was about to exclaim that he didn’t have one, but Henry quickly produced a brown paper bag handing it to Chloe. The tiger then continued reaching into his large messenger bag.
“When I called, they also said that it was okay if the little guy brought his friend to join him.”
Before Eliot could ask what Henry meant, his friend proceeded to pull a stuffed tiger from his bag. The kitten instantly recognized the toy from the prior night.
It had definitely not been what Eliot would consider his finest moment and admittedly one of the reasons that Henry may be treating him like more of a kitten. Eliot stood by his rationalization that he was just disoriented being woken up by a particularly bad thunder storm. However, it was hard to argue with the fact he had been rather inconsolable, and in a panicked fright as Henry rushed into the living room.
Latching on to Henry, it had taken some time before Eliot was able to collect himself. The kitten just burying his face into the tiger’s large shoulder. After several moments, finally looking up at his friend the kitten quickly went from a state of panic to one of embarrassment. Motioning to be set down, the tiger silently complied setting Eliot down on the couch and taking a seat next to him.
Despite the fact he was clearly still shaken from the thunder, Eliot began to try and explain that he had just been disoriented. Doing his best to go into an explanation of how everything seeming bigger then it should made things seem abnormal. Trying his best to explain he wasn’t scared but rather just momentarily confused. Looking at Henry, it was clear that despite nodding along to Eliot’s explanation the tiger was in no way buying it. Feeling determined to convince his friend that he wasn’t scared, Eliot straightened up about to double down on his explanation. It had been at this moment however that there was another loud crack of thunder.
As the sound echoed, the kitten winced and involuntarily curled into himself. Doing his best to fight down the fear he felt but finding it didn’t matter how logical he tried to be. There just being a deep sensation of panic and impending danger. This coupled with the overwhelming urge to once again take shelter in Henry’s arms. There being a strange similarity between the feelings. The kitten not being able to explain why the thunder felt so terrifying, nor that he just seemed to know that he would be safe if Henry was holding him.
An impulse that the kitten fought with all his might as he tried to save what little face that he had. Opening his eyes, Eliot felt his stomach turn as he saw that Henry was no longer on the couch next to him. There then being an immense relief as the tiger reappeared having fetched something from a nearby closet. Henry didn’t make any comment about Eliot’s frightened state, just placing the item, a stuffed tiger into the kitten’s arms. Squeezing the plush, Eliot did immediately feel worlds better. Henry still didn’t comment, just seeming to be satisfied that the item was helping. Then as if none of the prior events had happened, turned on the television, asking his friend what sounded good to watch.
Holding the stuffed animal tightly to his chest, Eliot wanted to comment that he was fine, and it had been unnecessary for Henry to dig out the toy. However, picking his battles he just felt relieved that Henry seemed willing to just let the moment pass.
The prior night’s events coming back to him and feeling a fresh wave of embarrassment the kitten started to proclaim that he didn’t want the toy. Henry however was quick to crouch down placing the plush into Eliot’s arms.
“We can all use co-counsel from time to time. Especially when we are in new places.”
Before Eliot could respond, a female fox in maybe her mid-twenties appeared and took hold of his paw. The young woman starting to lead him back to the main area of the daycare. Looking back towards Henry, the kitten watched with frustration as the tiger suavely leaned against the counter. Henry making some comment which caused Chloe to again break out in laughter.
“Don’t worry little guy, it can be scary to be apart. Yet, before you know it you will be having fun and actually be surprised that your dad is back to pick you up.”
Looking up at the fox Eliot started to retort that Henry wasn’t his dad, further wanting to make it clear that he wasn’t some kitten feeling uneasy. However, seeing the fox’s smiling face he just sighed and kept quite remembering rule number one. Given that they had no idea what had happened to him or how to turn him back, Eliot and Henry had agreed that drawing as little attention as possible was best. Meaning that notwithstanding his urge to snap at the fox, the kitten just rolled his eyes.
Despite being given suggestions of several different activities that he could do, Eliot was relieved that the fox left him alone in the large room. The woman heading off to check on the other furs. Scanning the room, he eyed a space in the corner that appeared open with no other furs in it. Making his way over, he plopped down with his back to the corner. Glancing back at the entrance, Eliot saw that Henry was now gone, presumably off to work.
The fox’s comment from a moment ago still in his mind, Eliot wasn’t happy to admit it did feel strange to be apart from the tiger. He quickly tried to tell himself that it was just a result of the fact that he hadn’t been apart from Henry since he shrunk. That his unease was caused by being apart from the only other person that knew he was actually an adult.
Still, the kitten couldn’t shake the feeling which was a strange mix of anxiety and longing to be back with the tiger. Coming out of his thoughts, Eliot realized that he was clutching the plush Henry had given to him tightly to his chest. Looking at the stuffed tiger’s face, Eliot wouldn’t admit it, but he was glad that Henry had brought it for him.
“That guy seems like pretty good company, but any chance you wanna meet some of the other furs here. I promise everyone is friendly.”
Even before looking up, Eliot already recognized the voice of Chloe. The leopard giving him a smile as she crouched down in front of him.
“I’m fine with just him.”
“Wow, he must be really good company then. I can be a little shy myself, but I always enjoy making new friends. Mind introducing me to him.”
Eliot found Chloe’s request to be borderline at best. The kitten having no interest in playing a game of pretend. However, compared to the fox from moments ago, Eliot found something genuine and far less patronizing in the way Chloe spoke. Even given the circumstances.
“This is Dicta.”
Smiling, Chloe took hold of the toy’s paw, giving it a gentle shake. “It’s a pleasure to meet you Dicta.” Noticing that Eliot was less then enthused by the game of pretend, she turned her attention back to the kitten. “So, Dicta here seems to be pretty well loved, does he usually get to join you?”
“Dicta actually belongs to Henry, I don’t find the need to carry around toys for emotional support.” As he spoke Eliot noticed that Chloe seemed to make a note of the fact that he referred to Henry by his first name and not as Dad.
“Henry bragged that you have a pretty impressive vocabulary.”
Two thoughts went through Eliot’s mind. First, that he was probably failing rule one, and second a curiosity about what Henry had said.
“What else did he say?”
“Oh, not much. He did ask that I take extra care of his special little guy.” Standing up Chloe reached out her paw for him to take. “We are just about to get started with the group activities. How about I show you to your spot?”
Taking the leopard’s paw, Eliot let her lead him back towards the center of the room. The kitten lost in thought as he wondered if Henry had been genuine in his request or just continuing his paternal charade. Stopping at a place in the center of the room, Eliot looked down to see that there was a laminated circle with his name on it. Around him the other furs were eagerly finding their own names as they took seats forming an orderly semi-circle.
Noticing the look of displeasure that the kitten had as he sat down, Chloe gave his headfur a friendly rub. “Don’t go looking so gloom. I promise you will be having fun in no time.”
Keeping his comments to himself, Eliot just gave the leopard a disagreeing look. Prompting Chloe to give a friendly shrug as she joined the other three caretakers in the center of the circle. What proceeded was a seemingly well-rehearsed welcome. The fox from earlier announcing that it was Wednesday, then asking if anyone could name the other days of the week. Watching the slew of paws go up as the other young furs excitedly started to participate, Eliot just tightened his hold on Dicta.
After what felt like an eternity the morning welcome ended, with each of the three unknown caretakers announcing an activity they would be doing. The group of young furs dispersing as they selected what they wanted to do for the rest of the morning. Opting not to participate, Eliot got to his foot paws and started to make his way back to the corner. The kitten was about half way back when he again heard Chloe’s voice, this time from behind him.
“Hold on there you two. The fun is in the other direction.”
Eliot turned around but continued to take several steps backwards. “I’m fine.”
Tilting her head and pausing for a moment Chloe then took several steps towards the kitten and crouched down in front of him.
“Hey, I know that it’s your first day in a new place with lots of new furs. But there is no reason to be nervous. I promise that everyone is friendly and way more fun than sitting alone in the corner.”
“I’m not nervous. I would just rather sit in the corner then participate in those activities.”
“Oh, come on, if you don’t want to color or play games I understand. Yet you can’t tell me that you would rather sit in silence then watch an episode of Sarah’s Playhouse.”
“I’m not a fan of shows for little kittens.”
“Oh, so you have seen it before?”
Feeling caught, Eliot slouched down as he mumbled a soft “no”.
“Well, I will let you in on a little secret. I actually think that it’s a lot fun and pretty good. Any chance you could do me a favor?”
“What kind of favor?”
“Well I’m supposed to be working but wouldn’t mind getting to watch it. If you let me take you over there I would kind of have an excuse. Mind helping me out?”
As she finished her sentence, Chloe reached out her paw for him to take. Eliot knew full well that the woman was just trying to trick him into participating. However, he found himself giving a silent nod as he once again took her paw. The thankful look on the leopard’s face making him feel like he was actually helping her.
Being led to a group of maybe six other young furs who were sitting around a tv, several turned as they approached. All the eyes on him, Eliot slowed his pace admittedly feeling shy. Feeling him start to drag behind her Chloe gave him another smile before she leaned over and picked him up into her arms. Something that caused his shyness to grow for a whole new reason.
“I know that you’re not nervous or anything but just in case don’t you worry. I promise I’m not going anywhere.”
Eliot wanted to make it clear that he definitely wasn’t nervous. However, he felt slightly overwhelmed again getting picked up in someone’s arms. Being picked up by Henry earlier was strange enough but as Chloe carried him over to the group Eliot couldn’t help but notice he was snuggly against her chest. Expecting for the woman to just set him down having completed her ploy, he was surprised that Chloe instead took a seat on the floor with him snugly in her lap.
Wrapping her arms around him she softly spoke into his ear. “Good. We haven’t missed the intro. It’s one of my favorite parts.”
Getting held in such an infantile way sent a way of embarrassment through Eliot. The kitten’s first instinct being to object, however his body seemed to have a mind of its own as it felt the leopard’s warmth. There being a deep sense of security in the woman’s lap. Eliot finding that for the first time since he shrunk, he wasn’t overly aware of how small and vulnerable he was. Actually, feeling relaxed he focused on the television.
The show which was a mix of live action and animation, opened to the main character Sarah, a rabbit wearing bright pink overalls looking directly into the camera as she greeted the audience. Something that prompted Chloe and the other furs to give a happy greeting back. Sarah then started an explanation, saying the she couldn’t find her friend Teddy, then asking the audience if they could help her look for him. The show had a very simple formula, with Sarah needing the audiences help then breaking out into a song. Eliot had to admit that it wasn’t as bad as he expected, actually finding that some of the songs were catchy. He was however, deeply put off by how Sarah would ask for help and the other young furs would excitedly race to be the first one to help or answer the questions. His displeasure was clearly noticed by Chloe who gave him a gentle squeeze, once again softly speaking in his ear.
“Come on, I bet you could lend a paw being such a smart guy.”
Shifting so he could look up at the woman Eliot gave her a grimace. “Why bother, I know that she can’t actually hear me.”
“Well first and foremost it is far more fun if you pretend that she can. Maybe just give it a try and see how it feels. Second, I would still be impressed. Henry was making some pretty big claims about how special you were. So far I’m inclined to believe him but wouldn’t mind you showing me that he wasn’t just bragging like all the parents due.”
Eliot’s ears fell down, the kitten feeling slightly embarrassed but also enamored that Chloe thought he was special. As Sarah again asked the audience for help, he shyly answered the question. Getting a happy response from Chloe who remarked what a good job he did. The woman however noting that he might have to speak louder for Sarah to hear him. The leopard’s praise put a happy feeling of butterflies in his stomach. So much so that when Sarah again asked for help, this time identifying which basket had the most toys, he excitedly shouted out his answer. Once again feeling good as Chloe exclaimed how impressed she was.
As one episode ended and another began, Eliot was getting rather lost in the show. By the third episode and after a bit more coaxing from Chloe, he was joining in singing the theme song. As another episode finished, he was admittedly disappointed when the other caretaker stopped the video and instructed the young furs it was time to change activities. As the group dispersed picking their next endeavor, Chloe got to her foot paws with him still tightly held against her.
“Okay kiddo what sounds good for the rest of the morning. You can either join Sally’s group and play some games or Kelly is doing a pretty cool art project.”
The way Chloe firmly held him as she spoke, made it fairly clear to Eliot that she wasn’t about to let him sulk back to the corner of the room. Figuring that the art project had the higher chance of him being at least somewhat left alone, he picked it. Ignoring his displeased tone, Chloe gave him a cheerful look as she carried him over to where a long table had been set up. Setting him down in a chair she again gave his head fur a rub.
“Okay, I unfortunately need to get back to work, but you have fun and I will be sure to stop by later to see if you’re not just smart but also creative.”
Watching the leopard head back to the receptionist desk, Eliot had a similar feeling to when Henry had left. It not making sense to him as Chloe had no idea, he was actually an adult. Yet he again just felt oddly alone and vulnerable. The caretaker running the activity, who Eliot presumed must be Kelly was quick to greet him. The woman, a brown fox, that was maybe in her early thirties, had a very manufactured excitement as she started to explain the project to the group. Looking at Eliot she seemed to have a thought, then reaching her paw out.
“I think its best if your friend sits this activity out sweetheart. We wouldn’t want to get him stained or sticky.”
Very defensively, Eliot clutched Dicta against his chest shifting in the chair away from the woman. He wasn’t sure why he was so against it but knew he wanted to keep the toy with him.
“I was told Dicta could stay with me today.”
Putting down her paw, the woman took the hint. “Okay but you promise that you will be super carful and ask for help if you need it?”
Continuing to keep his tight hold on Dicta Eliot gave an aggressive nod. Prompting the fox to give him a look that he felt was far too patronizing. Eliot hadn’t intended to actually participate in the activity which was using an assortment of supplies to decorate a small four-inch canvas. However, thinking about Chloe and the fact that the woman said she was going to be back instilled a desire to again show off to her. Eliot taking a great deal of time to space out different beads to make a border. Then working to fill in the square to make a mosaic picture of a star.
When he finished the kitten was a little disappointed that it wasn’t better. However, eyeing some of the other young fur’s work still felt satisfied that his was the best. Eyeing that the reception area was now empty, Eliot eagerly started looking around the daycare trying to find Chloe. Not seeing her, he felt more than a little disappointed that she wasn’t around for him to show off his artwork. It starting to occur to him that she probably wasn’t actually that interested and was just doing her job which meant pretending to take an interest in him. Despite telling himself over and over that he was an adult and it was stupid for him to even care, Eliot started to feel as if he was going to cry. The kitten pulling Dicta close to his chest as he did his best to not let the sudden rush of feelings overwhelm him.
Just as it felt the battle was lost and he could feel his eyes start to water, he heard Chloe exclaim from behind him that it looked great. Turning in his chair to see the leopard standing over him, his mood instantly changed to a bashful excitement.
“Really you think so?”
“You bet. That looks amazing. I think I have to admit that Henry was right with all his bragging about you.”
Her comment and the ones that followed as she mentioned specific aspects of his artwork made Eliot feel incredibly special. The kitten thinking to himself that she probably wouldn’t be as impressed if Chloe knew his real age. Yet these thoughts just got pushed down by the feeling of happy accomplishment.
“Well I would say that you seem to have had more fun than if you had just stayed in corner all morning.”
“I guess so.”
Giving his head fur another rub, Chloe gave him a happy smile. Relived that the woman was back at his side Eliot eagerly asked what was next. An eagerness that immediately faded as the leopard responded that it was time for everyone to get some rest after a busy morning.
“I don’t take naps.” As Eliot spoke, he did his best to use as much of an authoritative tone that he could muster. Something that clearly failed as Chloe did her best to force down a giggle.
“I find that hard to believe kiddo.”
“Well it’s the truth.”
“Henry really doesn’t put you down for a nap?”
Feeling that he was making headway, Eliot affirmatively nodded. Hoping that he had convinced the woman that he didn’t need one.
“No, he doesn’t.”
“Well that definitely means that I’m going to have to have a talk with him when he comes to get you. A growing kitten definitely needs his midday rest period.”
His hopes dashed Eliot started to pout as he aggressively pulled Dicta to his chest. Something that to his displeasure again caused Chloe to giggle.
“I promise kiddo. After a short rest you can get back to it having fun.”
Looking around, Eliot saw that the other caretakers had pulled out several mats and blankets. All the other furs finding a spot and getting ready to lay down. Accepting that there was little chance that he would somehow talk his way out of it, Eliot accepted his fate. Getting out of the chair he started to walk toward where the mats had been laid down when he felt Chloe gently tap his shoulder. Turning around he saw that the woman had once again crouched down.
“It’s been a pretty long and busy morning. Any chance you need to use the potty before you take your nap?”
His face burning and ears pressed firmly against his head, Eliot cringed. The kitten saying a very fast “no” to the question. Chloe gave him a look as if she was debating to press the subject but had decided against it. Just taking hold of Eliot’s paw and walking him over to one of the mats.
“Okay you just do your best to try and get some sleep. I promise that when you wake up, you will feel great and we can get going on some more activities.”
As Chloe placed a blanket over him, Eliot again thought that he was being silly. That the leopard was just being nice because it was her job. He did notice however, that she didn’t stop to talk to any of the other furs as she walked away. Something that he couldn’t help but allow to make him again feel special. Eliot also had to admit that as the room’s lights were shut off, he did feel rather tired. Unable to help himself from snuggling with Dicta as he drifted off to sleep.
________________________________
Eliot was outside in the pouring rain. The dark sky only briefly lighting up as there was a bolt of lightning and a crack of thunder. Feeling an immense fear, he didn’t know where he was but knew he needed to find Henry. Looking around, all he saw was darkness. The fear he felt growing. There was another flash of lightning but this time instead of thunder, there was loud growl. Looking back into the darkness he just felt that for sure there was something dangerous lurking there. Starting to run he didn’t know where he was going but just had a panicked sensation that whatever it was, wanted to get him. The next thing he knew he had tripped and was falling into a large puddle. Completely terrified his only thought other then panic, was that for some reason the puddle felt warm.
Jolting upright Eliot realized that he was still in the daycare and had just been dreaming. Despite this, he still felt an immense anxiety, breaking out into tears. It was only a moment before Chloe was over by his side. The woman crouched down and pulling him into hug, gently rubbing his back while she cooed. Doing her best to help him settle. It was no use though and despite burying his head into her chest he still just felt an immense alarm.
“I need Henry!” Exclaiming the words, he just felt as if somehow being back with the tiger could help.
Holding him tightly against her, Chloe picked him up and started to gently sway back and forth. “Hey there kiddo, it was just a bad dream. I promise in a moment you will start to feel better.”
Shaking his head, Eliot again exclaimed that he needed Henry. Still crying he felt a different swell of emotions. An anger and frustration that he was stuck as a kitten and deep loathing that he had been forced to spend the day at the daycare. His fear and panic turning to an anger, Eliot was still crying but now determined that he needed to be back with Henry.
“I don’t want to be here, and I need Henry.”
Carrying the kitten away from the group of still sleeping furs, Chloe took Eliot towards the bathroom. Entering the room and setting him on the counter she gave the kitten a sympathetic look.
“Kiddo I know that it can be scary to have a nightmare, but I promise this feeling will pass.”
Wiping away his tears which had finally stopped, Eliot again tried to find as an authoritative voice as he could. “You don’t understand. I shouldn’t have to be here at all. I want to leave.”
“Come on, I know that you were having fun this morning. Let’s not let a nightmare and little accident ruin the rest of the day.”
It wasn’t until Chloe said the word accident that Eliot realized his pants and the bottom of his shirt were wet. The kitten having been so caught up in his emotions that he hadn’t noticed. Looking down at his pants Eliot froze, his eyes once again starting to water. Placing a paw on his shoulder, Chloe took a more sympathetic and childish tone. A clear shift from the way she had been speaking to him as if he were an adult.
“Really its not a big deal kiddo. These things just happen sometimes, but there is no reason to feel bad.”
Eliot felt like he was stuck inside tornado of emotions. Still anxious from his dream, still angry from the situation he found himself in and now a rush of embarrassment. Feeling overwhelmed it was as if each emotion was bombarding him trying to take over. Finally, after a short pause he spoke asking the question that seemed to burst out with the most urgency. The noticeable shift in Chloe’s voice and demeanor making him feel as if he had lost something.
“Do you still think I’m special?”
“Oh of course I do Kiddo. With how much you have impressed me this morning. There is no way that a little mishap could change my opinion of you.”
“You promise?”
“I promise. Now how about we get you cleaned up?”
Accepting the situation, Eliot cooperated as Chloe pulled him off the counter and instructed him to take off his wet clothes. As he paused, the leopard giggled before handing him a towel and turning her back to him. Clearly finding his modesty cute. Waiting a moment for him to dry off and get the towel wrapped around himself, she then turned back around with a smile.
“Okay let’s see about getting you dressed.” Moving to a cupboard, Chloe started to dig through it. “Just in case of a situation like this we keep a couple spare outfits. They may not be as stylish, but I promise they will get the job done.”
Not really having any preference one way or another when it came to the childish clothing that now fit him, Eliot didn’t really care what his new outfit might be. His apathy quickly faded however as he saw Chloe pull out not just a bundle of clothes but also what was clearly a child’s pullup. Stepping back he made a loud exclamation.
“I don’t need one of those!”
Clearly having expected the reaction and coming disagreement, Chloe remained calm as she crouched down so she was at his level.
“Alright little guy, I can only guess your thoughts on wearing some protection. However, we do have some rules in place in the event of any accidents.”
“What kind of rules?”
“So, it works like this. After an accident you just need wear one of these for a little bit. Later in the afternoon if you haven’t had any more issues then we can change you into a pair of regular underwear.”
“But it’s not like I will be asleep. This is stupid. There is no way I will have another accident.”
“Sorry little guy but rules are rules and its out of my paws. But if it’s like you say, then when I check on you later, we can just forget this little speed bump ever happened.” Watching the kitten who just stayed silent with his eyes fixed on the pullup Chloe did her best to give him a reassuring smile. “Come on, can’t you show me how mature you are and help me out by following the rules?”
Eliot didn’t know how a leopard was so good at giving puppy dog eyes. Despite part of his brain telling him that she was just giving him cover by saying that he would be the one helping her, Eliot couldn’t help but feel an immense pull that he would be letting her down. Causing him to cringe shyly as he looked away and said a quiet “fine”. Chloe immediately lit up as she bombarded him with a series of complements saying that she knew what a mature and adult guy he was. Complements that again despite telling himself were just for show, did bring a certain pride to him. Bashfully looking back towards Chloe, the woman had the pullup held open in front of him.
Accepting his fate, Eliot stepped into the pullup, letting Chloe adjust his tail so it was situated through the garment’s corresponding hole. Only stopping to give his head fur a happy rub, Chloe then did the same process with a pair of shorts. Shifting back and forth the pullup wasn’t so bad, but he did feel it snugly hold onto him. Reaching out her paw for him to take, Chloe then led him out of the bathroom and back into the main room of the daycare.
As they walked, Eliot’s awareness of the pullup increased considerably. The garment not feeling uncomfortable, yet making its presence known as it continued to tightly hold on to him. Looking throughout the room, Elliot saw that the sleeping mats had been put away and the different furs were now getting situated at several tables.
Looking back at the kitten, Chloe smiled. “Alright kiddo, ready to have some lunch?”
Feeling how hungry he was after the busy morning and nap, Eliot nodded. However, as they started to near one of the tables the kitten once again slowed so that he was dragging behind the leopard. Realizing that something was amiss, Chloe turned to crouch down in front of the kitten.
“Are people going to make fun of me because I had an accident?”
“Of course not kiddo.”
Eliot was less then convinced by the woman’s reassurance, but feeling an ease as she squeezed his paw, let Chloe lead him to one of the tables. Getting situated, one of the other caretakers soon arrived handing out each of the fur’s lunches. Taking his, Eliot felt Chloe give his headfur a gentle rub. The woman then saying that she had to handle a couple things but promising that she would be back by the time he finished eating. Somewhere in the back of his mind it occurred to him that she probably felt he needed more attention after his emotional outburst. However, giving her a happy nod, Eliot just felt relived and happy to know she would be back.
Emptying out the brown paper bag, Eliot saw that Henry had gone all out to prepare his lunch. Finding a sandwich with the crust cut off, accompanied by apple slices, and a large cookie, each neatly portioned in a plastic bag. Eating his lunch the kitten found himself longing for the day to be over. His first thought being that he wanted to be out of the daycare, this however was accompanied by him again having a strong urge to just be back with Henry. Working hard to convince himself that it was just a result of the tiger knowing his real age. Thinking that it would be nice once he was back at Henry’s apartment and the two could watch something together.
Just as he was finishing his cookie, Chloe returned to his side giving him a smile. “I might have to add a lecture about nutrition to go with that talk about naps when Henry comes to get you.”
Realizing that the leopard was referring to the size of the cookie, Eliot finished it in one triumphant bite. The two sharing a smile, Chloe then held out her paw for him to take.
“So, after lunch is free play. Any chance I can interest you in some fun board games?”
Feeling that playing a board game didn’t sound too terrible, Eliot nodded. However, as Chloe led him to a group of three young furs he slowed his pace.
“You’ll play too, right?”
Once again crouching down, Chloe gave his headfur a rub. “Sure, but I promise that everyone here is friendly.”
Despite nodding in agreement, Eliot did feel fairly intimidated as he looked at group of furs. Still somewhat dragging behind Chloe as she led him over to the group. Taking a seat, the leopard gave Eliot a reassuring smile as she patted the space next to her on the floor. Getting situated the kitten was met with a smile from a young female rabbit. The other two furs each a male fox however, were more interested in picking their game pieces then acknowledging Eliot.
The young rabbit held up a plush continuing to smile. “I’m Lia and this is Snuggles.”
After a momentary pause, Eliot felt a gentle nudge from Chloe. Taking the hint he slightly held up Dicta as he introduced both the toy and himself. The two foxes seemed less then enthused just shrugging, Lia however returned a big smile as she waived the paw of her plush. Chloe began a brief introduction of the game to Eliot who nodded along as the Leopard explained the goal and rules. It seemed straightforward enough to the kitten, he was however a bit surprised by the level of detail that the game’s board and pieces had.
As they started playing the game Eliot was just playing to pass the time, however as he and one of the foxes became neck and neck to win, the kitten started to lose himself. Eventually up on his knees and then almost jumping up as he moved his game piece to the finish.
Despite Chloe and Lia smiling as they shared in his victory the two fox boys still seemed less then enthused by things. Promptly getting up to go find another activity. Lia however, smiled as she gleefully asked if they could play again. Still feeling excited from his victory Eliot gave a very happy nod. Looking to Chloe though he felt a pang of disappointment as he saw the Leopard’s face. It clear that the woman was feeling remorse.
“Sorry guys. I have to go handle some things but I’m sure we can find a game that the two of you can play by yourselves.”
Lia was quick to give a happy nod of her own at the idea. Eliot however felt an almost anxiety at the prospect of Chloe leaving. A feeling that the leopard undoubtedly noticed as she gave his back a gentle rub before grabbing a different game from a nearby pile.
“You guys play this for a bit, and I promise I will be back to challenge the winner.”
The use of the word “promise” made Eliot aware of the degree he must have been broadcasting his distress at being apart from the woman. Something that gave him a rush of emotion as he realized just how much he had been acting like an actual kitten. Feelings that felt incredibly muddled as Eliot thought about how much he enjoyed spending time with the leopard and the attention she gave him. Pushing down the feelings and deciding he wanted it to be clear he was okay on his own, the kitten nodded as Chloe started to unbox another game.
Setting up the new game, Chloe asked if Lia could explain the rules to Eliot. Upon getting another happy nod from the rabbit, the woman gave the kitten a gentle rub of his headfur as she got up and headed off to handle some task. Not seeming to be bothered at all by Chloe’s departure, Lia started to describe the rules of the game. Explaining that they each took turns placing marbles on the board with the goal being to get five of their color in a row. The catch being that each time they finished their turn, they would push down on a plunger in the board’s center. The effect being that all the marbles on the board would then shift, rolling into an adjacent position.
Watching Lia demonstrate the boards movement and thinking back to the simple connect four game he had as a kid, Eliot had to admit he thought it was pretty cool. Signaling that he understood and was ready the two started to play. Perhaps because it was now just the two of them, Lia seemed far less shy. The young rabbit seeming to have a perky demeanor as she began to ask Eliot all sorts of questions about himself. Lia giving her own answers before asking the next question. There was some difficulty as Eliot was unsure how to answer things such as his age. It occurring to him that Henry must have established certain things. The kitten making a mental note to ask the tiger later that night.
Despite his lack of an answer, Lia didn’t press the issue just happily explaining that she was five. Something that honestly left Eliot feeling strangely intimidated as he realized the rabbit was surly older then him. The kitten then asking her why she was in the daycare and not school. A question that prompted Lia to be the one who got silent. Seeing the way she cringed, Eliot was quick to ask a different question in hopes of moving past the seemingly tense moment. To his relief, Lia’s smile returned as she answered that she did like Sarah’s Playhouse but thought the way Sarah talked to the audience was annoying. A sentiment that Eliot happily agreed with. Lia then offering that she thought an old cartoon called Moon Scouts was way cooler. Being somewhat aware of the show from when he had been growing up, Eliot knew enough for the two to get into a conversation about it. The kitten was actually surprised how much time had passed as Chloe returned to their side asking who was winning. Looking to the game board Eliot realized that at some point he and Lia had stopped making moves, the two becoming engrossed in their conversation. Looking up at the leopard, Eliot smiled as he answered.
“It’s actually a stalemate.”
“Oh, that doesn’t surprise me. You two are both pretty smart. Do you two mind taking a quick break?”
Both young furs shook their head as they got up and began to follow Chloe. Leading them to the bathroom, the leopard turned giving them a smile.
“Alright. I’m just going to lend Lia a quick paw to freshen up, then we can confirm that your all clear little guy.”
Despite Chloe’s attempt to not directly mention things both Eliot and Lia had a look of deep embarrassment. For a moment Eliot wondered why Lia might need help in the bathroom but his thoughts quickly turned to a different matter. He had been too caught up talking with Lia to notice but thinking about his pullup, the kitten noticed that it felt different. Shifting slightly, he could feel that it felt heavy and warm between his legs.
Reaching down with his paw the kitten confirmed what he already knew. Eliot just felt frozen at the prospect he had yet another accident. This one the worst of all as he hadn’t even noticed it happen. Once again Eliot felt his emotions starting to turn, as a sudden rush of different feelings hit him all at once. The one most predominantly coming to the surface being a mixture of shame and failure. It feeling as if he was somehow letting Chloe down.
The bathroom door opening Chloe had started to say it was his turn but stopped mid-sentence. The leopard realizing that something was wrong as she saw the level of distress that he was in. Looking from Chloe then to Lia, Eliot winced shutting his eyes and meekly saying that he was sorry. A moment later he felt a gentle touch on his shoulder, opening his eyes to see the leopard crouched in front of him with a caring and concerned look.
“Why are you apologizing sweetheart? I’m the one that’s sorry your having just a bit of trouble today.”
Not waiting for a response Chloe scooped the kitten up into her arms. Once again carrying him into the bathroom and setting him on the counter. This time though the woman seemed to get a slightly inquisitive look.
“Are you feeling alright kiddo? Any tummy aches or feeling yucky today?” Asking the question May reached out her paw and gently felt Eliot’s forehead.
Shaking his head, the kitten again noticed that Chloe had slightly changed the way that she spoke to him. It seeming much more like baby talk to him.
“I don’t feel physically bad, I kind of want to go back to my corner and die. But that’s an emotional yucky not a physical one.”
As Chloe tilted her head in way that seemed to borderline on disbelief, Eliot felt his attempt to somehow regain credibility with the leopard definitely just broke rule one. After a pause, Chloe just gave him a smile.
“Well lets just make sure we work together to handle any yucky feelings before it gets to that. Again, no one is upset or angry with you, I do just want to make sure that you are okay.”
“Yeah I’m fine.”
“Are you sure? You just said that you normally don’t have accidents like this is all. So, I want to make sure nothing is going on.”
As the leopard spoke Eliot lowered his head. Both the kitten’s ears drooping down in a way Chloe knew was a tell sign of a young fur caught in a lie. The small boy suddenly unable to make eye contact as he silently looked down at the floor.
“Its okay kiddo I’m not upset or anything like that. I am worried about you though. I would actually feel a lot better if I knew that perhaps this wasn’t a completely new situation.”
Eliot felt his cheeks burning as he thought about the truth which was that since being shrunk, he had actually had several accidents. Starting with waking up on Henry’s couch wet and then twice having not made it to the bathroom in time. The tiger was in no way angry or upset with the kitten, however Eliot did notice what he felt was a somewhat degrading change in the way his friend spoke to him after each incident.
After the first accident Henry had simply asked if Eliot was feeling alright. The tiger acting the same way he had a handful of times that Eliot had gotten sick in the past. Just telling the kitten to let him know if he started feeling unwell or needed anything. The first time he had wet his pants had been a slightly different story. Eliot had admittedly felt one of his emotional whirlwinds. Having strong feelings of embarrassment and shame as he went to find Henry.
Meekly trying to blame the event on his shrunken body just feeling foreign to him. Henry picking up on his emotional state had wasted no time before trying to comfort him. However, it still felt at least somewhat like the way his friend would normally try to console him. The tiger starting by making a joke, then just asking Eliot if he was okay. The kitten’s simple remark that he was fine being an answer that Henry was seemingly satisfied with.
It was after the third accident that Eliot noticed his friend’s demeanor seeming to change. Eliot wasn’t sure if it was a result of the continued accidents or his reaction to waking up during the storm. However, this time after Eliot once again found the tiger, Henry acted much less like a friend. It wasn’t as if Henry was upset or angry rather going out of his way to make it clear he wasn’t. However, there was something commanding and almost paternal in the way he spoke. The tiger not only bringing up the idea of finding some form of protection but upon Eliot’s angry dismissal of the subject, beginning to talk in an almost infantile way. Henry calmly explaining that there was no reason for him to be embarrassed.
The tiger even going so far as to bring the subject up again before they went to bed the prior night and once again in the morning. Ultimately the two agreeing that it would be Eliot’s choice. Thinking about things however, the kitten felt if the tiger knew that he was having accidents it was likely the subject would be brought up once again.
Hearing a long “hmmm” Eliot was pulled out of thought to see Chloe tilting her head as she waited for an answer. Sighing the kitten stammered as he spoke.
“I know how to use the toilet… but.”
In a cheerful voice, Chloe elongating the word “But”.
“But sometimes I have trouble knowing when I’m about to go.”
Shifting to a somewhat stern tone, the leopard gave him a stern look. “So earlier when you were so sure that you wouldn’t have another accident that wasn’t maybe the truth?”
Suddenly Eliot felt terrible that he hadn’t been honest with the leopard. It feeling as if he wasn’t just letting her down but worse had somehow betrayed her trust. His face scrunching up he started to apologize in an almost panic. Letting out a gentle cooing noise, Chloe pulled him into a hug.
“Its okay kiddo, I promise that I’m not upset. I am actually really relieved to know that nothing out the ordinary is happening today.” Letting go of the kitten she then looked him in the eyes. “Do you think that you can do something for me though.”
Deeply relieved that the leopard wasn’t upset with him, Eliot gave a fast nod. Prompting Chloe to give him another big smile.
“I can easily tell what an amazingly smart and special guy you are, but do you think that you can maybe be open to some suggestions.”
“What kind of suggestions?”
“Well for starters, maybe be a little bit more open to having fun even if maybe you think the activity won’t be. Also, I need you to trust that I’m the grownup and do know what’s best.”
Eliot was less then enthused by both of the suggestions but said a quiet “Okay”. Something that prompted to Chloe to start giving his headfur a rub as she thanked him.
“Alright, how about we get you out of that wet pullup.”
Eliot gave no complaint as he was lifted off the counter and set down. However, as Chloe pulled not another pullup but a diaper from the cupboard his mood instantly changed. The kitten’s reaction having been expected, Chloe seemed unphased as she started to gather several changing supplies before finally turning her attention back to him.
“Alright kiddo, we already had a brief talk about how this works. I know I explained if you were dry then we could go back to big boy undies but being wet again means we have to change to you having a bit more protection.”
“But that’s a diaper for actual babies.” Taking a step back, Eliot again felt his emotions building up. “Why can’t I just wear another pullup?”
“Sorry kiddo but rules are rules and you need to follow them just like everyone else. Also, though, the pullups just aren’t made for this kind of accident.” Seeing that Eliot was far from convinced Chloe crouched down and gently placed her paw on the kitten’s Shoulder. “You said you could do this for me and trust that I know what’s best. Part of that means listening to me even if you aren’t happy about things.”
The kitten felt torn between his emotions. On the one paw, having to wear a diaper felt like a complete submission to the fact he was a little kitten. However, on the other paw, he didn’t want to disobey or fight the leopard. It again feeling as if by doing so he would be letting Chloe down or seemingly worse cause her to be disappointed in him.
“It doesn’t mean anything about me right. I mean you know I’m not a baby.”
“All it means is that you are a very mature guy that is willing to handle a ity bity problem.”
Feeling somewhat eased by Chloe’s use of the word mature, Eliot muttered a sullen sounding “Fine”. Not taking issue with his tone of voice, the leopard just smiled as she started to push Eliot onto his back. Realizing that she intended to change him, Eliot tried to intercept the woman’s paws. Yelping that he could do it himself. With one paw Chloe batted away Eliot’s paws while she firmly placed her other on his chest.
“Not a chance kiddo. Even if that wasn’t against the rules, I’m not sure you have very much experience with this.”
His face burning and somewhat frozen with embarrassment Eliot just laid stiffly on the floor while Chloe went to work. The leopard demonstrating her expertise in the manner, taking only a moment before she had the diaper on and his pants pulled back up. Chloe then lifting him back up to his foot paws.
“See that wasn’t so bad now was it.”
Not quite able to form words, the kitten was just silent as Chloe started to move towards the bathroom door. Feeling the newest undergarment wrapped around him, Eliot instantly missed the pullup. Finding that the thicker diaper caused him to almost waddle as he walked. A feeling that caused a new concern to cross his mind as Chloe reached the door.
“Do you think Lia realizes what happened?”
Turning back to face the kitten, Chloe gave him a sympathetic look. “She may have some idea of things, but I know for an absolute fact that she won’t care at all if she does. Just like I don’t care or think anything about it.”
Eliot was less then assured by the leopard’s assertions. Finding that he was somewhat hiding behind Chloe as the two exited the bathroom. The young rabbit however just had a smile on her face, asking if Eliot wanted to go finish their game. Eliot was momentarily relived that perhaps Lia didn’t realize what had happened. However, as the trio started to walk back to their game, he started to deeply miss the pullup. Not just feeling the bulky diaper between his legs but finding that it felt as if his pants were tightly stretched around his now padded bottom.
The result being that as he walked, Eliot felt the need to try and cover himself. Something that Chloe noticed giving the kitten a look that made it clear she felt he was overacting. Getting seated back around the marble game, the two young furs started to pick up where they had left off, with Chloe watching from the side. With the leopard observing, Eliot started to feel an increasing desire to win. Something that he was admittedly finding harder than he expected.
Lia had clearly played the game before, the rabbit seeming to have a much better understanding of how the marbles would move after each turn. Going back and forth the game continued to feel neck and neck until finally Eliot actually had a stroke of luck with a row of his marbles lining up purely by accident. Notwithstanding this, he still felt a sudden rush of excitement that he had won. Looking up to Chloe with a big smile on his face.
“Oh I almost had you.”
Looking to Lia, Eliot saw that despite having lost, the rabbit also had a big smile on her face.
The kitten excitedly commenting to the girl. “we could play best two out of three?”
Making the suggestion, Eliot wasn’t thinking about trying to pass the time or work to appear that he was a normal kitten. The truth being that whether Eliot was willing to admit it or not, he had actually enjoyed talking and playing with Lia. So much so that as Chloe exclaimed they should actually start packing up the game, Eliot felt a deep disappointment. The kitten turning his attention to the leopard.
“What? Why do we have to stop?”
Giving him a big smile Chloe got to her foot paws. “Sorry kiddo, but it’s just about time for Lia’s mom to pick her up.”
Looking around, Eliot noticed that several of the young furs were being led towards the daycare’s front desk to awaiting parents. Feeling a rush of excitement, he turned the Chloe.
“Is it time for Henry to get me?”
From Chloe’s sympathetic frown he already knew the answer before she spoke.
“Sorry kiddo it will still be awhile before Henry is here to pick you up.”
His mood rapidly starting to sour Eliot slouched down letting out a deep huff. Something that prompted Chloe to give him another smile as she rubbed his headfur.
“Don’t go getting all gloom and doom, I promise we will still have fun this afternoon while we wait.”
Although he had in fact just been having a fun time with Lia, Eliot just felt sullen and that the odds of that happening were unlikely. The kitten however, was pulled from his thoughts as Lia rushed over to him. Elliot realizing that the younger female fox from earlier that morning was there to take the girl to her awaiting mother.
“Thanks for playing with me and Snuggles, it was a lot of fun. You will be here again tomorrow so we can have a rematch, Right?”
Eliot was bit taken aback by the girl’s excited proclamation and question. Just mumbling that he wasn’t sure. Despite his mumbled response, Lia exclaimed that she hoped that she would get to play with him again soon. The young rabbit then being led away Eliot had to admit that he felt a certain almost pride in the fact the girl actually wanted to see him again. This was coupled with a feeling of disappointment as he watched Lia leave.
“Don’t go getting out of sorts little guy. I promise that you will get to see your new friend tomorrow and we will still have plenty of fun this afternoon.”
Turning to face the leopard, Eliot crossed his arms. “This was just a onetime thing. I’m sure after I talk to Henry, he will realize I definitely don’t need to be in daycare.”
Chloe did her best to hide a giggle at Eliot’s notion that he somehow didn’t need supervision. She then however held the back of her paw to her forhead feigning a dramatic pose. “Oh no, so these are our final hours together. We must make the most of them then.”
Eliot was annoyed that Chloe was so sure he would actually be back. Yet another thought occurred to him. If he did convince Henry that he didn’t need to be in the daycare all day, that would mean that he wouldn’t get to see the leopard again. Eliot had only just met the woman and still felt confused by the feelings he had towards her. However, the thought he would never see her again made him feel suddenly cold.
Seeming to pick up on the fact that something was going on in the kitten’s head Chloe reached out her paw, suggesting that they go find something to do until it was time for Eliot’s pickup. Doing his best to push down the strange conflicting thoughts, Eliot nodded as they moved on to another activity.
“So kiddo, what would you like to do next.”
“Is there something that we can do together?”
Asking the question, Eliot felt suddenly embarrassed. It seeming obvious that he didn’t want to leave Chloe’s side. The leopard just gave him her usual smile before saying sure. Then leading Eliot back towards one of the tables she exclaimed that they could do one of her favorite things.
As they got to the table, Chloe got him situated and then said she would be right back. Looking around, Eliot noticed that about half of the furs had already been picked up, with a good number of the remaining half appearing to be ready to go. Eliot still felt a murky mix of feelings. He knew he wanted to back with Henry, but also knew that it wasn’t just because he wanted to leave the daycare. It felt not only as if everything would be better when he was back with Henry, but Eliot had an almost excitement to see the Tiger. Feeling a strange desire to share everything that had happened. The fact nothing noteworthy had occurred just left him feeling muddled. The kitten once again just wanting to push down these feelings, was relieved to see Chloe returning.
Taking a seat next to him, the leopard set down an incredibly large box of crayons, before opening up a folder.
“So, what would you like to color? I’m thinking that today I’m going to do a princess.”
Eliot felt less then enthused by the Leopard’s choice of activity, his ears falling down on his head as he scowled.
“Coloring is for little babies.”
“Says who? I happen to love coloring.” Seeing that the kitten was less then convinced Chloe gave his headfur a rub. “Come on, I promise that it is more fun than you might think. Can’t you try it for me?”
Feeling obligated that he had asked the leopard to do something with him, Eliot let out a less then enthused “alright”. Once again ignoring his attitude, Chloe started to flip through the folder of different coloring pages asking what the kitten was in the mood for. Seeing one of a giant robot in a city, Eliot picked it.
As he started to work on his coloring, Eliot again felt a bashful pride as Chloe continued to complement him on what a good job he was doing. The kitten wasn’t about to admit it, but he was starting to have a lot of fun as he colored. There being something nice and satisfying in the way the once plain and lifeless picture started to take shape. As the two worked on their respective page, Chloe started to ask Eliot all sorts of questions about himself. This started off simple enough with the kitten telling her things such as his favorite foods although as Chloe asked what he did for fun, Eliot found himself having to come up with an age appropriate answer.
“Mainly I just play video games and watch TV.”
Chloe let out a dramatic sigh as she shook her head. “Really? Nothing else? I’m definitely going to have a list of things to talk about with Henry. He doesn’t let you have a tv in your room does he? A growing kitten doesn’t need that much screen time.”
“I’ve just been staying at Henry’s for the past couple of days, so I don’t have a room.”
“Oh, are your parents out of town or something?”
Eliot started to try and think up an answer but suddenly felt a deep pang of emotion. The truth was that he didn’t really have much family. His father had never really been in the picture and his mother was erratic at best. The woman routinely being out of contact with him for long stretches of time. Really Henry was the closest thing to family that he had. None of this was new, but Eliot found that as he thought about it, he almost wanted to cry.
Looking at the kitten who was pulling his plush tiger tightly to his chest, Chloe realized that the topic was some sort of sore spot. The leopard feeling somewhat relieved as the young fox who worked at the daycare came up to them with a phone explaining that a gentleman named Henry needed to talk to her.
Eliot instantly lit up at the mention that the tiger was on the phone. Eagerly listening as Chloe started to speak.
“Please there is no need to apologize and definitely don’t go to all that trouble trying to find a service to come get him. I’m more than happy to stay late and watch the little guy.”
Gathering that Henry must have to work later then he expected Eliot felt his heart sink. Listening as Chloe continued to reassure the tiger that it was no trouble at all, then giving Henry her cell phone number and suggesting he just text her with updates when he might be there.
“Really, I promise that it’s not a problem, but I do think there is someone here that wouldn’t mind getting to just check in with you about his day.”
As Chloe held the phone up to Eliot’s ear, he felt sudden rush of excitement just hearing Henry’s voice.
“Hey sorry buddy, but there is an issue with a big case and I’m going to have to work longer than I expected.”
Trying to downplay both his excitement to talk to the tiger and disappointment he would have to stay longer, Eliot said that he understood in as a mature and passive tone that he could. However, as Henry asked what he had been up too, the kitten felt a strange rush of excitement. Detailing all the activities that he had done, starting with watching TV and ending by triumphantly explaining that he won at both board games.
As Henry let out a friendly laugh and complemented him on his victory, it occurred to him that beating young furs probably wasn’t much of an accomplishment. Saying goodbye and that he would see him later, Henry told the kitten to hang in there and that he would finish work as soon as he could. Handing the phone back to Chloe, the kitten did feel better just getting to talk to Henry. Trying to tell himself that the warm sense of security he felt was just because the Tiger knew he was actually an adult. Looking up at Chloe, the leopard seemed to have a warm satisfaction at the interaction. Something that left Eliot acutely aware of how much like a kitten he had acted on the phone. His ears dropping down in embarrassment, he returned to his robot coloring page.
Letting out just a slight giggle, Chloe didn’t comment about the call or Eliot’s reaction. The two just continuing to work on their drawings. After the tense moment, Chloe continued to ask Eliot questions but kept things light and on general topics. Finishing his page, Eliot looked up to see that all the other young furs must have been picked up.
“Wow that looks amazing kiddo, for someone who doesn’t color your really good at it.”
Looking at his page, Eliot did feel really good about it having worked his hardest to not go out of any of lines. Although looking at Chloe’s page he was completely stunned. The leopard having used varying versions of the colors to add shading to the simple drawing. Even going so far as to draw in her own detailed landscape behind the princess.
“Wow I didn’t know you could use crayons like that.”
“Its not that different then using markers or other supplies. If you would like I could teach you a couple of neat tricks sometime.”
“Really, you will?”
“Sure kiddo, but now I do have to go do some end of the day work.” Seeing the kitten’s hesitance that she might leave his side, Chloe got up and quickly pulled Eliot up into her arms. “How about you come join me at my desk and I after I finish, we can play some video games on my computer.”
The kitten made no objection as he was carried back to the reception area. Taking a seat at the desk, Chloe held him firmly in her lap, while she propped up her phone and started another episode of Sarah’s Playhouse. Eliot actually found himself feeling incredibly secure and relaxed as he sat on Chloe’s lap while she worked. Unlike when they had been sitting on the floor, the leopard had to keep a tight hold on him, so he didn’t slide off. Something he was finding incredibly pleasant as he was snugly pulled up against her. He was also getting rather engrossed in the episode of Sarah’s Playhouse on Chloe’s phone. The leopard still trading comments about it with him while she worked. Eliot hadn’t even noticed that one of the other caretakers had approached the receptionist counter until the woman started to speak.
“The goal is to give them back at the end of the day. Don’t tell me you’ve decided to just keep one.”
Chloe turned the chair to face her coworker. “It hasn’t come to that yet. This little guy’s pickup just had to be pushed back awhile and I don’t mind.”
“I’m sure you don’t. If I’m not mistaken, that little guy belongs to that absolute hunk of a tiger. I wouldn’t mind waiting around for him either.”
“I hadn’t noticed.”
“I’m sure you also didn’t notice him flirting up a storm with you this morning, and don’t think I didn’t notice the way you slyly gave him your number.”
Eliot felt a deep annoyance by the conversation, and more so by the way that Chloe seemed to blush at the fox’s final comment. Turning to tug on Chloe’s sweater as he asked if they could play a game yet.
Relieved to have a distraction, Chloe gave Eliot’s headfur a rub saying that sounded like a plan. Unsurprisingly, the game Chloe picked was educational and clearly meant for young furs. Eliot didn’t mind though as he played from Chloe’s lap while the leopard spectated and continued to talk with him. After a while, all the other caretakers had gone home for the day and it was just the two of them. Something that the kitten found incredibly nice as he lost track of time.
Seeing Henry come into the daycare, Eliot excitedly started to squirm in Chloe’s lap. The leopard helping to set him on the floor. Taking off, the kitten made his way around the receptionist counter with a big grin on his face. Reaching the other side with Henry however he stopped, seeing that the tiger was giving his new attire an inquisitive look.
Looking down at the floor, Eliot muttered softly. “I had an accident while I napped.”
Henry quickly crouched down placing a paw on the kitten’s shoulder. “Hey buddy, it’s not your fault. Were both still dealing with all of this and figuring things out.”
Getting a silent nod from Eliot, Henry picked the kitten up into his arms then turning to Chloe behind the counter.
“I can’t thank you enough for staying late. I hope it wasn’t too much of a hassle or problem.”
“Oh no hassle at all. You have a really special little guy there and it was a pleasure spending some extra time with him.”
Finishing her comment, Chloe handed the morning art project and two sheets of paper to the tiger. One being his coloring from earlier in the afternoon and the other being what appeared to be some sort of daily report. Eliot couldn’t make out what it said before Henry placed the items in his bag but took notice to the fact that Chloe said the tiger could call with any questions.
Much to Eliot’s annoyance Henry traded several comments with the leopard. Ending by saying that if there was any way he could make up for her staying late to please tell him. Chloe responding that she would and that she hoped to see Eliot again in the near future. From over Henry’s shoulder as they left, the kitten could see Chloe giving him a wave goodbye. A gesture he returned before they got outside. Realizing that it was now almost dark out Eliot thought back to his nightmare. Making no complaint as the tiger carried him to the car and placed him in the passenger seat. Although the moment his friend got into the car Eliot aggressively said what was his predominate thought.
“You can’t sleep with her.”
“Oh, did she talk about me?”
“Of course not, but I know you and you only think about one thing when it comes to attractive women.”
“First that’s a little hurtful, and second she seems nice. Weren’t you just recently telling me I should try and date nicer women.”
“That’s out of the question, you don’t date. You just sleep with somebody and then never call them again. You can’t do that with someone who works at my daycare.”
“Since when is it your daycare? I thought you were clear that you had no interest of being in, how did you put it. kiddie internment camp?”
Eliot slouched down. “Well you’re going to make me keep going, aren’t you? So, you can’t sleep with her.”
“How about we table both these issues. In the meantime, I was thinking we could go to the movies. Wasn’t there a new action movie that you wanted to see?”
Eliot’s ears perked up as he became excited. “Really?”
“Yeah I think we could both use some fun.”
Seeing Eliot light up made Henry feel better. The look on the kitten’s face when he had come around the receptionist counter and explained his change of clothes had been heart breaking. Henry still wasn’t sure what to do with the situation. The kitten’s prior declaration about Chloe a reminder that his friend still was somewhat his adult self. However, Henry had noticed that since he first saw Eliot sitting in the leopards lap, the kitten had a tight hold on his lion plush. The toy nestled in Eliot’s arms as he excitedly asked if the tiger would get him popcorn. There was also the daily report Chloe had given him which mentioned the kitten would need to start arriving at the daycare in a diaper. A conversation the tiger was not looking forward to having.
Pushing things out of his mind, Henry decided to keep playing things by ear. Just putting his car into gear while he jokingly asked if his friend had been good during the day.

When you are Forced to Start Over Chapter One
First chapters can be hard, and I tried a different structure with this one compared to my other stories. I originally planned on this just being a one shot but kind of fell in love with the characters. So, if people like it, I will happily continue this story while I continue to break out what I want to happen in my other stories.
As always comments mean the world to me and help me get an idea of what people like.

I really like the story so far going through his day at daycare and Eliot acting small was very cute and also was cute when he got embarrassed, it’s nice that Chloe can tell Eliot needs some extra help and pushes him to do activities and not hide in his corner. Henry seems like a good friend helping him and trying to figure out how to take care of his friend.
I really can’t wait to read more if you continue 😸

I'm really enjoying the story so far. Coincidentally, I was searching for a story that takes place in a Day Care setting, and yours just came at the right time. I personally prefer wholesome stories, and I'm glad to see that it turned out to be one. It's also lovely to hear that you plan on continuing the story instead of making it a one shot.
I will be looking forward to the next Chapter. Keep up the good work.

Off to a good start.
I had figured (and confirmed by one reply I saw) that Moon Scouts was evidence of this being in the same universe as When You Break Free.
I notice a few other parallels between this story and that as well. But I haven’t had a chance to dive into your other stories so I don’t know how they compare in that regard.
In any case, I’m definitely looking forward to more of this story!
