“How did you come into caring for such a cute, little one?” DB asked as they casually made their way into the family restroom.
Zarra chuckled as she started to get everything ready to change Caldma’s diaper.
“It’s quite the long story,” she said while placing the green-colored, baby Scorchio upon the changing mat. “The short answer is that little Caldma here is the reason I am no longer living on the streets of Neopia Central.”
DB couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“Wait,” he asked with disbelief. “You used to live on the streets?”
“I did,” she humbly replied while holding the baby Scorchio in place as she tossed away the used diaper. “I grew up in Meridell and was going to college until my family fell on hard times. I then came to Neopia Central to seek the help of a human visitor, as most neopets do when they are in need of assistance. I just got unlucky with the human who first found me and, well, ended up being left for dead at the Neopian Pound and begging for neopoints on the streets.”
DB couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“I find it hard to believe a Zafara as beautiful as you would ever have had to live off the streets for a single moment,” he remarked.
“Well,” she replied as she finished putting a fresh diaper on Caldma. “I wasn’t always a royal zafara.”
“You,” the green zafara coughed. “You weren’t always a royal zafara?”
Zarra finished putting away everything she needed for Caldma’s diaper change, cradled the baby Scorchio in her arms, and faced DB.
“How’s about we talk more about this over a hot meal?” she suggested. “I’m sure it will help you feel better.”

The trio found themselves a comfy booth inside of a nearby diner. It was here that they placed their food orders and continued their discussion.
“As I was saying,” she stated. “I used to live in Neopia Central in that terrible Neopian Pound.”
“You also said that you weren’t always a royal zafara,” added DB before quickly gulping down a glass of water.
“That’s right,” she replied while gently sipping from a cup of coffee. “I was a red zafara until I happened upon a human who not only adopted me from the pound, but who also provided me a home here on Roo Island and a royal paint brush.”
“Wow!” awed DB as he worked to stifle a cough. “I wish I could be so lucky.”
“Perhaps you can be,” stated Zarra. “The human who asked me to care for Caldma comes by fairly frequently. Maybe he can help by adopting you into our little family?”
“That’d be amazing!” the green zafara replied. “I felt that I’d never be adopted out of that horrible place, which is why I decided to make a run for it. I never counted on them to send anyone after me for just up and leaving like that. That’s why you and Caldma found me plastered to that tree. I was just about to get caught until you two came along.”
“So you’re on the run?” she asked nervously.
“You might say that,” he replied in a low tone as he seemed to sink into the booth.
Zarra anxiously looked about the diner upon coming to understand what was going on.
“This isn’t good,” she said. “They’ll hunt you down until you pay back the debts you owe them for the room and board.”
“What room and board?” he asked sarcastically.
“I know” she said. “But they are very strict about these things. I mean, I thought about running out on them many times. They then told me the story of the ogrin that had tried to do exactly what you’re doing right now and ,well, I got cold feet.”
“Well,” he said before taking a quick drink of the water in front of him. “I would rather risk that fate than suffer a day more at the miserable hands of that nasty techo.”
Zarra sighed before saying, “I always thought the uni was nice.”
“Ah, the uni,” he said with a hint of sarcasm. “She’s got some, well, issues.”
The royal zafara felt disturbed at the news she was hearing. However, her heart told her that she was doing the right thing by supporting DB in everyway she could while she was able to. No neopet deserves to go through that kind of trauma. Especially after being treated so poorly and being mislead by a human who feels they own them just because they are able to access the Neopets Portal.
“HOLD IT!” cried an angry, gruff voice. “STOP RIGHT THERE!”
DB felt his stomach knot upon hearing the familiar voice of the grarrl that had called out towards where he, Zarra, and Caldma were sitting.
“Oh, no!” he exclaimed. “They found me!”
Zarra watched in horror as the three of them were quickly surrounded by a group of uniformed neopets. Two of which wasted no time in grabbing DB by the arms before dragging him to the door.
“What’s going on?” she asked the grarrl angrily while an ixi and acara forcefully removed DB from the diner.
The grarrl approached the royal zafara, handed her a card, and said, “My apologies, Miss. He won’t bother you again.”
“But!” she cried out as the grarrl, ixi, and acara carried DB away.
The sight caused Caldma to go into a full-tilt, booming cry. He couldn’t believe his new friend was suddenly being taken away from him.
“Don’t worry, Caldma,” reassured Zarra as she hugged the baby tightly. “We’ll get to the bottom of this."
