After Asher brought Renyu back home from a trip to the store, he made them a nice meal while Renyu relaxed on the bean bag he had gotten her. Renyu had told Asher about the many ways Avali liked to lounge, be it in hammocks, beanbags, or big comfy beds full of pillow sand blankets, and he immediately ordered one to give her something of her own to have. She would've been perfectly fine without it, but it did warm her heart.
But, when sleeping, she’d rather be curled up against him in his bed anyway.
Once they had eaten, she watched him clean the dishes and figured now would be a good a time as any to give him something in return for everything he had given her. “Asher, when you’re done I want to show you something neat,” and before he could respond she added, “and don’t rush! I know you will, you goober.”
Asher squinted his eyes at her, holding up a plate and a sponge to rub it as fast as he could while holding eye contact with her, “What if I did anyway, hmmm?”
She stuck her tongue out at him as she got up, “Oh shush, I want it to be a little surprise, and I can’t do that with you watching me grab it.” He chuckled, going back to the dishes without a word, making Renyu smile at him. Moments like these were what made her feel welcome, at home, and comfortable on an alien world. Admittedly less alien now that she’d been here for so long, but still.
She had folded up her coat on the sofa, satchel on top, which held the surprise. Would he like it? Of course he would, he liked anything someone made for him. He was probably one of the most positive people she’d ever met. But, this was special to her, and she wanted it to be special for him too. Renyu held the small pouch to her chest since she was unable to hold it with two hands, making her way back to the beanbag to plop herself down just as Asher was drying his hands. It took him a bit with all the fur, but a little dampness would dry out in the air. He made his way over to Renyu with his hands behind his back, tail swaying behind him as he looked at her with curiosity.
“So, what’s the surprise?”
“It’s a surprise. Sit down so I can show you, silly.”
Once in front of her, he sat down with his legs crossed, arms propping him up while his tail wiggled on the floor in anticipation. “You know how I am with surprises. Can’t stand not knowing what’s gonna happen.”
“Oh I know, but just this once I want to see the face you make when you see this.”
With a raised brow, Asher gave her a quizzical look. “You’re not just going to pull out something like a rock are you? I don’t do well with being bamboozled.”
“Heh, no, but I hope this is better than a rock.” Resting the satchel on the side of the bean bag, she reached in to grab her gift, accidentally nudging too far since she didn’t have a second hand to stabilize the pouch. It slid off the bean bag, leaving her hand visible, a bundle of what seemed to be brown string between her fingers. Her reveal wasn’t going as planned and it made her cheeks a little warm with mild embarrassment. “Sorry, I still feel so clumsy like this.”
Asher rested a hand on her head, giving her a little rub between her ears, focusing on her rather than the thing she wanted to show him, “It’ll get better with time, Ren. Go ahead and show me your thing.”
She leaned into his hand, eyes closed, enjoying the feel of it pressed into her feathers. His words, even if simple, gave Renyu more confidence in herself. “You’ve been doing so much for me for over a year now. You saved my life, but you didn’t stop there. There’s hardly been a moment you weren’t by my side making sure I was alright. I would have gone insane by myself, but you were there to keep that from happening.” She opened her eyes, gently nudging her head into Asher’s hand to push it off so she could look him in the eyes.
His expression had softened, a light smile on the edges of his lips. She continued, “You’ve treated me like I’m part of your own family… and I want to do the same.” She held her hand out, letting the string unravel from her grasp to reveal one of her own feathers attached on an end with a little bead. It was a necklace. “Avali gift each other their own feathers when they feel particularly close with someone. It’s a visual sign of their relationship with each other, be it with a packmate, a friend, or a partner. To me, you’re all of those in one. You may not be an Avali, but you’re my packmate, my family.”
The Wicker held his hands out, accepting the gift. He was silent, but his expression said everything; he looked like she’d given him one the most precious things in the world. She could almost feel the blushing emanating through the fur on his cheeks. Renyu wanted to gush about it, but kept her composure, “I know this is practically nothing compared to everything you’ve done for me, but I—”
She was cut off by Asher pulling her off the bean bag into his lap, giving Renyu a tight hug, his arms enveloping her, his head resting on hers. It caught her by surprise, but she relaxed, hugging him back. Asher mumbled into her head feathers, voice muffled from how close he was holding her, “This is so, so far from nothing you wouldn’t believe it. Thank you, Renyu.”
“No,” she wiggled a little to get him to loosen up so she could kiss him on the cheek, “Thank you.”

Oh god this is so cute and sweet! I love the way the little way Asher teased with the dishes, it does so much to establish how close they feel with each other already. They have such a lovely dynamic. Even within just this short blurb, there's so much personality. Amazing work <3
