It was a clear, sunny sky that awaited him outside. Asreigir blinked repeatedly as his eyes tried to adjust to the brightness outside of his cave. He took a deep breath and felt the smell of flowers and sweet grass wash across his nostrils as his body stretched in the warm midday sun. He had slept too long again, but it was spring afterall and his muscles were still feeling stiff from the cold of a long, hard winter. His wings unfurled, began to catch the wind and with another lazy yawn, he threw himself up into the sky. It took him a couple of moments to adapt his movements to the calm breeze that blew in from the valley, but soon he found himself carried through the air like a leaf on the water.
He looked down, his eyes tracking the flow of the river. There wasn't any game to be seen, but that wasn't unusual for this time of day and his stomach was still nicely filled from the successful hunts of the last days. Asreigir allowed himself to glide down further before he set down in a patch of flowers and soft grass. He enjoyed the feeling of gentle, cool wetness beneath his feet as he casually trudged down to the water. Soon it would be time for the fish to travel up the river again, he thought to himself, which would grant him an ample supply of easily accessible food. He almost purred at the thought as he lowered his head to the glistening surface and his maw greedily dipped in to drink. The water was cool and clean; the lifeblood of the green mountainside he had buried his cave into.
A flicker of movement ahead of him made him pause. He took another gulp and raised his head. Right there in front of him stood a male black dragon and looked back at him with obvious interest.
Asreigir's jaw dropped, allowing the rest of the water inside to run down his chin. He hadn't seen any other dragon as beautiful as that before.
His throat suddenly felt dry, as if he hadn't been drinking just a moment ago. The black dragon sniffed at the air, obviously taking in Asreigir's scent, and smiled. Asreigir felt his heart skip a beat and fought the sudden urge to wade through the river towards the newcomer. Maybe that other dragon would leave if he approached him too rashly, and he certainly didn't want that to happen. Maybe it'd be best if he said something? The right words escaped the grasp of his desperate mind.
The black dragon cocked his head, looking at Asreigir as if trying to read his intentions, then he took a step into the river causing cold water to splash up his leg. Asreigir watched as the other dragon crossed the distance between them, his steps and posture filled with growing certainty, until he stood right in front of him. His unfamiliar scent trickled into Asreigir's mind like a soft song of joy, which filled his chest with a feeling that made him think of the flutter of a butterflies wings.
It took another moment before the black dragon finally spoke and Asreigir first heard the name that he knew his heart would sing for the rest of his life. "My name is KarrSerath."
This picture is meant to portray the first meeting between Asreigir and Serath and I think that you can tell what happened afterwards, when you look at the other pictures of the two. ;)
I am very happy with how Allagar managed to capture the subtle emotion passing between them in this moment and with how alive everything in this picture feels. Truly a magnificent piece of art ^.=.^
