150 Watchers: 077-078 Ponyta and Rapidash
I’m doing the 150 pokémon for my first 150 FA watchers. I got no watchers in February 2017, despite still uploading, and I could only conclude it was because all the attention was going to those offering Valentines Day commissions. In hindsight, it’s probably because a lot of people did the “social media detox” after the election, but to me who was poor and lonely and desperately trying to reconnect people, it was a sign.
Ronintendo
Although we’d been friends for a long time, Ron and I didn’t watch each other until around this time (around, because Ron has since nuked his watch list which deletes the data in the watch notifications). Ron was a nice kind soul and his main drawing theme at the time was recounting dates that went ridiculously wrong, so I wanted to draw one of those. I doubt he would date a “feral” Ponyta, though, so to him goes my 8th-ever pokmorph. I will admit the specific scenario is also partially inspired by this piece by Ethan64 of the time.
I spent a long time thinking about what Ponyta should eat, as a herbivore, before settling on Spaghetti al Pesto. Surprisingly, the only thing that gave me trouble here was the shirt. I wanted something that referenced the Safari Zone – initially thinking of drawing the Safari Zone entrance building from Fire Red / Leaf Green – but then I found again this T-shirt, and now my only regret is not being able to show more of it. I rarely draw lipstick, but I thought Ponyta needed a little something extra. Hoof hands are always an interesting way to go. And, of course, Ron tangled in the spaghetti was just plain fun.
MiLayna1018
I’ll be honest, I though it was a different Lanya when I saw the notification on January 31st, 2017 (…that was how I discovered Layne had closed their account, but I’m getting sidetracked). Milanya, however, is one of those people who, as soon as I see their gallery, I want to fav every single thing in it.
She has a daughter OC, Ruby the Rat who, as soon as I saw her assigned Pokémon was Rapidash, I knew had to be receiving one as a gift. After all, what daughter doesn’t want a pony?
I am very happy at how Ruby came out. Every wrinkle, every bow, even the sweep of her wagging tail, fell in exactly the right place. I have to admit this comes from my years of experience drawing rodents, so it almost feels like cheating. Rapidash, however, gave me a lot of trouble. It wasn’t the head, it wasn’t the flames, it wasn’t the hooves, it was the shoulders. This unexpected point is one I’m not accustomed to having to rotate in 3D in my mind but on horses is very particular. I finally understand what all the fuss is about when people say drawing horses is hard. Further complications emerged when I went to add Milanya herself in, as she is definitely not the right height – canonically, she stands at 8 ft (2½ m) digitigrade, while Ponyta is supposed to be only 5½ ft (1¾ m). I tried to hide it by making her rest on her heels like a Zootopia character and bend her knees a little, but there’s no way that make her stand shorter the nearly 3 ft (1 m) necessary so, even with this, she is technically a chibi. Once again, why, normally, I’d work with layers to be able to fix this but that would break the “as fast as possible” rule (indeed, this little scene took me 2 hours, way more than the 20 minutes I’d been averaging per sketch!)
As with the twitter sketches, if you want yours colored, or if you want me to edit you in to somebody else's, I'll happily do it for $5 (not counting shading)
