Light was cast on features of the chamber and its contents that had been resigned to darkness for hundreds of years, but with the new found illumination, Juan’s eyes were the first to witness the wonders that had been hidden for so long.
The idol stood in all its magnificence on a dais, which itself was on a multi-tiered stone altar in the centre of the chamber, making no effort to hide its importance and value. The light emanating from all the braziers spectacularly reflected and refracted off of the deep blue of the pure sapphire idol.
Juan stood there for a moment, forgetting that he had the end of his torch sitting directly inside the brazier he’d lit as the awe of what he was seeing took all his attention. He felt a zinging of excitement through his body as he finally realised that he wasn’t wrong and that he’d uncovered something absolutely amazing.
Snapping himself back to reality he realised that the worshippers of Bengal may have designed this tomb with traps in mind to protect its contents, especially when it represented their deity. Juan thought to himself this could be the reason why the idol was never stolen previously, grave robbers being known to gain access to tombs and burial chambers without relying on taking the front entrance, as demonstrated by the two days of manual excavation work he had to perform just to get inside the complex.
Taking one step in front of the other, Juan cautiously moved towards the altar, using his prowess and immense knowledge of ancient architecture and Bengal’s worshippers to make calculated advances towards his goal. The slow journey to the idol allowed him to appreciate it in all its magnificence and also the formidability of the being it represented, with his muscular 4 arms and sentient, headed tail that completed him as a Chimera.
The idol stood proudly on its daias, and it was for this reason that Juan was almost shocked that he was now standing on the first step of the altar with no traps or obstructions threatening him or preventing his journey.
He tried to control his excitement as he slowly ascended the steps towards his prize, the flames gleaming off of its blue, enchanting surface as it stood proudly on the pedestal.
