The delivery had finally arrived. What had it been… two months? Sarge opened the box. He immediately saw several bottles of a vibrant blue color. “Oh… I remembered they said there were a lot of fruit flavors, but I didn’t expect it to be blueberry.” He grimaced as he pulled out one of the bottles.

From the corner of his eye, Sarge saw a piece of paper flutter out of the box and land on the floor near him. Cocking his head to the side, Sarge shrugged. “Well, better late than never. Was hoping for this a few months ago so I coulda paid for a new pair of pants with the money, but I s’pose it wouldn’t hurt to still try out this new dietary supplement!”

Popping the cap on the bottle, Sarge chugged down the beverage. It was thick like a smoothie and had a strong taste of blueberries. With each gulp, he could feel the smoothie drop into his stomach. He knew the bottle was a quart in size, but he was curious what would happen if the entire thing was downed in one sitting.

He felt his stomach swell outward as its bloating intensified. With the final drop gulped down, Sarge let out a satisfied sigh. The smoothie was a lot better than he had thought. Tempted to grab another bottle, Sarge noticed the paper on the ground again. Adjusting his position, he grabbed the paper instead of another bottle and began to read it out loud:


Dear Mister Wolf,
Thank you for signing up for our clinical trial of our new “Nutri-Thick: Blueberry” Meal Replacement Shake.
This nutrient-rich drink has high doses of every essential vitamin, mineral, and fiber. With a new medical technology, these high doses can be stored in the body without overdosing.
Though there are a number of side effects that are of note, there are a few that still need to be tested for round two of our clinical trial.
Some side effects may include:
• Painless bloating
• Non-permanent pigmentation of skin
• Mild addiction to the drink due to its nutrition.


“Sounds simple enough.” Sarge said, crumpling up the paper and throwing it in the nearby waste basket. “So if this is a meal replacer… I should probably have one a day, right? I think I can do that!”

Already feeling the satisfaction of drinking the Nutri-thick wear off, Sarge pressed a hand into his gut, realizing that one of the side effects noted was painless bloating. Now that he had read it, he was feeling rather bloated… but at the same time it didn’t seem to hurt. It was almost as if his belly had already gotten used to feeling this tight.
