Thrifting (Short Age Regression Story)
I wrote a short Age Regression story!
Story Dump Below
You walk into the giant Thrift store in awe of the sheer size of the building. Was it a warehouse at some point? A super grocery store? You walk through the separated aisles and different rooms of the odd spacious building. Towards the back is what you are looking for- the VHS tapes! You had your mind set on a movie you loved as a child, but you wanted the authentic experience of sticking the tape into your old VHS player. It was a silly notion but you were determined. There was an entire wall of tapes toward the back of the store. The typical cardboard-sleeve tapes dominated most of the selection, but you were on the hunt for the kid tapes- the ones with the plastic covers that creak when you open them. Every movie you could think of that was released in that time was here. It was as if someone robbed a Blockbuster with a time machine. Toward the end of the VHS section, right before the shelves changed to crappy DVDs, you found them. A treasure trove of all the movies you watched when you were a kid. Every 'Disney Classics' and every Disney bootleg was here. You scanned the rows carefully, reading off each title in your head to check if it was the right one....

Haha! Success! You found it! You pry it from the lower shelf and open the case up. There it is in all its 90's glory. It even still has the coupon to the video store it was purchased at! Neat. Treasure in hand, you turn to make your way to the checkout but something catches your eye. In a room behind the media section is a small library. It’s walled off aside from the single entrance door so you hadn’t noticed it sooner. Something about it calls to you to take a look. You look at your phone and check the time. You really didn't need to be anywhere... Oh why not? You curiously poke your head into the seemingly small library room. Bookshelves lined the walls and directly in front of you was a tall bookshelf dividing the room in half, forcing you to walk around to see the other side. Aging books about history and computer technology fill the shelves. A couple of token “- for Dummies” books from a yesteryear. Rounding the corner to the opposite aisle you spot a door leading to another, equally sized library room. The walls look like they were painted recently as it seems… brighter? There might be more books than you thought. No biggie, you can take a look. The other room seems more colorful anyways. Much less drab than the dusty room you were in now. You pass by some outdated medical textbooks and non fiction war stories into the next room. Something washes over you and you feel... Different. You pay no mind as you look at what this room has to offer. Now here are some books you recognize. Young Adult novels, even a couple well worn titles you read in high school! Wow. You hadn't even thought about 'Animal Farm' since your 10th grade English class. Curious you pick up the book and flip open the cover and just as you suspected, this book was taken from your old Alma Mater! The library card sleeve was still glued inside, stamped with your school district's name. You stop and wonder who took it. Could it have been someone you knew? Maybe it was an honest mistake and they forgot to return it after they graduated. For all you know this could be the exact same copy you read in class! You put the book back and wonder what other goodies lie on these mysterious shelves. Rounding the corner to the opposite aisle you spot another door leading to a much more colorful library. Odd that it's the same layout as the last room, just more kid friendly. Circling around to see the last of the Young Adult fiction you walk into the next room and are hit with a wave of nostalgia. At least you think the odd tingling in your stomach is nostalgia. It feels exactly like the old book fairs at your middle school! All the fun titles were there too! Harry Potter, A Series of Unfortunate Events. The works! There are some shelves higher up you can't quite see. Did they add another shelf from the last room to this one? Regardless, you walk the aisles, remembering the time in 6th grade where you dragged your parents out of the car after school to the book fair so they could buy you something. You kind of feel like you have to go to the bathroom, but you ignore it. Rounding the corner to the opposite aisle, you are starting to get a sense of dejavu. Another door, leading to a much more colorful room, painted in bright kid friendly colors. Were all these rooms buried back here? You can guess what kind of books lie on the other side of the doorway and press on when you catch sight of an entire row of Captain Underpants! Passing through the door and you feel... Weird. You can't really put your finger on it but something is off. You still have the VHS tape in your hand as you stop to figure out what’s wrong. You look down at the tape, it seems… newer? Nah, you just found a really good copy. The sensation has passed, so your attention is drawn back to the books. You reach out and peel the book off the shelf, opening it and rereading the entire book right there in the store. It was just as funny as you remember!! The flip book was still there too and you were actually stifling giggles as you read on. Who knew they were still so funny? You can't see up to the books on the top couple shelves now. Maybe the rooms were getting bigger. This is a weird layout for a thrift store after all. Where at one point a few good strides could get you through the room it would take longer now, as if you were getting smaller? No way, the rooms were just... weird. And more books from your childhood kept stealing your attention. Chapter books from 4th grade became picture books and seek & finds you remember from 3rd. As you kept toddling along, you got smaller and smaller, the slow regression quickly ramping up as you ventured deeper into the magical back rooms. You must have been about 7 at this point, going on 6. Your sneakers lit up when you stomped and big words were hard to understand, but that's ok! That's why there were pictures in the books. You reached out and pulled a thin book on space out from the shelf. Opening it up there were full page illustrations of space with big bold lettering for the single sentences on each page. You sat yourself down in the aisle, sitting right on your butt as you slowly read your way through the book. Some of the big words like "traversing" and "planetary" were kind of hard to read. You didn't quite know what some of them meant but the pictures were cool! By the time you were finished with the book you placed it back on the shelf and toddled on, ignoring the increasing signs you had to go potty. You turn the corner to the opposite aisle and the giant doorway leads to another room. Something in the back of your mind tells you they are parenting books. You can't read any of the big words though, as a 1st grader you can barely read. Were you even a first grader? The books behind you were really big and you didn't know how to read at all! And the pull-ups under your shortalls sure didn’t indicate anything older. How old were you? 5? 4and a half? You struggled to remember. With each shaky step towards the door you lost more and more of your age. You body was screaming out that you had to go potty but you had to get through the door! You had to! Glancing over at the books before the doorway you see the square alphabet books you vaguely remember from daycare. You try and remember what the "afabet" is.. But after getting to "E" you don't remember. You stick your hand out on the doorframe, your legs were really shaky! It didn't help you had a thick diaper taped between your legs either. Taking a final step through the door you trip and fall on your belly, bladder finally giving up as you lay there in the “new parents/ baby book” section of the library. You flood your padding, the last bits of grownup knowledge leaking out into your diaper. You try to get up but your legs don't want to work! You relent and roll over to sit on your soggy butt in the middle of the floor. You look up at the giant room around you and pull the VHS tape close. It looks familiar, even if you can't read the title. The colorful picture on the front looks really fun though! Before you can come to your senses and understand what all happened, a teenager walks around the corner in a hurry, frantically looking for something or someone. They spot you and scoop you up off the ground.
"That's where you went! Goodness I thought I lost you for a second!! You can't wander off like that OK?"
You nod slowly, still clutching the VHS tape with both hands. Who is this person? Do you know them? They are so big! You are so small! Why are they looking for you? They peek over to see the cover and smile warmly at you.
"Did you find a fun movie?"
You nod yes, looking down at the cover, trying to pronounce it,
“Rhawbn Hoowd.”
Speaking was hard and you hadn’t quite gotten the hang of it yet.
"Oh you are adorable. I think I have a VHS player at home. As soon as we are done here we can go right back home and watch it ok?"
You feel a bit sad you can't watch it right now, and pout up at your babysitter.
"Awww. Hey don't give me that face. I'm sorry we had to run a few errands today but we are almost done I promise."
You smile happily and nod, getting carried off to where you had wrestled yourself out of your stroller and crawled towards the colorful books.
