Did you know his iconic goggles were actually British? He got them from some captured enemy supplies. I believe they were actually intended as defense against gas attacks, but he found they worked well in sandstorms. And before marrying Lucie, he'd dated a woman named Walburga. The two had a daughter together, Gertrud. After Rommel married Lucie, both Walburga and Gertrud came to live with them. Gertrud made her father a scarf which he wore throughout the war, primarily in Africa. If you like Rommel, I highly recommend the book Field Marshal: The Life and Death of Erwin Rommel by Daniel Allen Butler. It's probably the most comprehensive biography of the guy. Desert Fox: The Storied Career of Erwin Rommel by Samuel W. Mitcham, Jr. is also pretty good, if a little more slapdash.
Also Erwin Rommel was given the ultimatum to commit self termination or have his family judged on court on the end of the war because he was suspected by association to be apart of the plot of July 1944 where some members of the Wehrmacht wanted to kill Hitler and negociate peace with the Allies. Rommel chose death over the loss of his family, now he's resting in a cemetery and his wife is by his side.
