Remember the C64 Mini? Well here's the full sized "THE 64 [maxi]" with a full working keyboard!
Some more info about this device:
Can you boot into BASIC just as the old original C64 did?
Yes there is an option to do this or to boot into the carousel. You might even be able to boot into vic 20 mode as well although I have not tried this.
Can I plug in a cartridge or a device which used the user port?
No there isn't a cartridge or user port on this device.
What about the IEC bus, i.e. using a real 1541 and other things like a cassette port?
In theroy something like this *could* work - although I have no idea if the THE64 would have the drivers needed to make it work. I don't have such a device so I don't really know.
Can I write programs in basic?
Yes this works pretty well especially with the built in keyboard. The keyboard is a lot quicker to respond (less lag/delay) than with the mini and a USB ketyboard.
How do I power it?
It's powered by a normal micro USB connector so any 5v (best guess 2A) power supply should work like a phone charger.
How does that keyboard feel to type on?
It is just my opinion but it isn't as good as the real C64 keyboard but it is not a bad keyboard. Also the shift lock key does not "stay down" as on a real C64 although it does function - it is more like a toggle switch.
Can I use other usb-based controllers other than the joystick that comes with THE64?
Maybe I am not sure as I don't really have any other controllers to try with it.
What ports are on THE64 maxi?
At the right hand side there are 3 USB ports and a power button. At rear to the right there's a micro usb port (for power), a full-sized HDMI port and another USB port. And that's pretty much it.
What hardware does THE64 maxi really use?'
Its actually just an allwinner A20 (arm) CPU with a linux distro at its core running the VICE emuator.
THE64 maxi comes with a joystick. Can I use the joystick on a PC?
Literally tried this on my debian box and yes it works!
A link to the manual for THE64 maxi.
A forum for both mini & maxi.
One person on youtube has stated that the THE64 maxis' keyboard is usb based and so the maxi might lend itself to being modded.
