Game Reset
A Thursday Prompt story

Prompt: new beginnings (365 words)

The otter femme sighed as she studied her face in the mirror, trying to avoid meeting her own gaze and managing to ignore the traces of gray in her headfur. Apart from a certain weary set to her expression and the other signs of aging, she still had the trim figure she’d tried so hard to achieve and maintain since the birth of her last child.
She finally smiled, admiring her slim legs in the black trousers, the gold braid along the outer seams practically glowing. Doesn’t matter how I got here, she thought, I am here, and I must look my best. She glanced over at the tunic she was supposed to wear, black with gold braid and bearing symbols of rank and nobility. Some of those insignia were less than six months old, approved by the Congress after it reconstituted itself after the Spasm.
It had been a grand experiment, of course, but ultimately her nation’s form of government had collapsed under the weight of domestic pressure and its own contradictions as unscrupulous furs vied for power on behalf of their masters. The Spasm had overthrown the government, and it was agreed by nationwide vote that things had to change.
The new constitution set the rules for the game, with the Army and the Congress established as its guarantors. The previous (surviving) players of the game were not permitted to participate.
Her presence, standing before a mirror while an aide helped her into her tunic, was a direct result of the changes made to the rules.
The aide, a smoky gray-furred wolfess, finished brushing the last specks of lint from the black and gold tunic before stepping back and bowing. “You’re all set . . . Your Majesty.” She smiled in an attempt to reassure the otter femme. “The limo’s waiting.”
“Thanks, Sally.” Zoe Patricia de Vega, called by the will of the people and the government to become her nation’s first sovereign, made a final and unnecessary adjustment to her uniform and squared her shoulders. “Will the television cameras make me look ten pounds heavier?”
Sally chuckled, following Zoe out of the room.
The otter hoped the crown wouldn’t be too heavy.
