Playmat thumbnail time!
Trying to figure out which one will work best as a playmat, so I can finish it up for the NJ invitational. Opinions encouraged! And advice, if you think none of these designs will sell okay/are appealing and have other ideas!
PS – For the uninitiated, playmats are essentially 14x24" mousepads you can play TCGs on, like Magic. Also works fine as a mousepad. ;)

Oh my gosh 2 and 4 are striking. I am not a TCG player but most of my friends are... Assuming I started while I like 2/4, I think 3 has the best composition for it. I'd feel bad covering up the elf/dragon in the other two! I'd be the person to scoot my cards to the side so I could still see them hahah XD
I think as far as sales go, 2 is probably the most likely to sell. Has a super strong sense of contrast already, and that contrast creates a lot of depth. Plus the pose is flashy and very 'high fantasy'ish, it's exactly what I would expect to see on a mat. Fills up the space in an interesting way, has a dragon on it... Boom xD Perfect. 4 is great, but I almost want it as a desktop background, not a card mat.

#2 is my favourite i think, because skeletal dragon things are just plain awesome - but i think #3 is the most suitable for a mat. I really like the grand scale of it, with only a small figure in the foreground. Are those huge sea creatures back there? I don't know what's going on, but it's interesting.
Is there a theme for this mat you're trying to illustrate, or is it just whatever?

#3 is nice. Always up for flying sharks, manta rays, and narwhals. As someone else said, it also has a decentralized focus, so the image will stand on its own, no matter what is covered by cards and the like. :) If you're after a definite single-subject kind of image, #2 is probably the way to go, or possibly #1. They're all great. :)
Echoing some of the above that #3 would look visually cool as a playmat. And since it's mostly a landscape, it shouldn't detract from play too much? (Also, I'm a sucker for small people in big landscapes, so I admit my bias!)
... Though if #1 was eventually worked into an illustration... Oh man. That would be the coolest too.

I think 2 and 3 might be you best bets. I think all of them all stand to be great (though for some reason something about 1 currently is a bit iffy for me- maybe i just find that one harder to read).
I feel that 2 has the potential to be the best seller given its more "generic appeal" - it's very action-y, high visual contrast grabs attention, sports a BA dragon, and is more classical fantasy. The other 3 mats feature subjects that I'm sure you could make AMAZING, but likely would have smaller audiences interested in their actual subject matter and as result may be a harder sell.
On the other hand, while I don't have much of any experience with playing mats, I feel that 3 might have the best design for that purpose. I imagine the colors on that would be amazing and there are enough little things going on that it doesn't feel like you're entirely obscuring the subject of the mat. It has more of a "background" feeling rather than character illustration which I think I'd probably enjoy more as a surface to place my cards.
