TFF 2017 Post-Con Report
Posted 8 years agoThank you TFF. It's been a good bit since I had a con that struck me on such a emotional level and it wasn't until the final hours that I discovered how much this little spring break getaway meant for me. I hadn't planned on going to Texas Furry Fiesta until a few weeks ago, so I never did much research on what I was getting into. The driving force for me going was of course my suit family once again. They've taken me from the East Coast to the Gold Coast, and now we can add Texas to that list. I bought my tickets on a spur-of-the-moment decision, making it one of the most expensive trips I've taken thus far. I placed my hopes on meeting with my friends down in Texas, because who knows when the next chance would've been.
TFF is one of the most well-balanced conventions I have attended. There's enough space for the con to feel big without being cluttered. I was honestly surprised at how many people I've recognized from past conventions and it was great to see familiar faces among a new venue. I also had the opportunity to talk to many people that I didn't think I'd be able to meet anytime soon, given our regional differences. I recognized the rarity of the moment and I let myself loose, hopping on stage and dancing in front of who knows how many hundred others, and partaking in my first true room party. My gamble had paid off, and I can place TFF somewhere in the top of my best cons list.
Thank you to the LupeSuits of Texas for being my hosts for the week and making me feel so welcome. This wouldn't have been the same without you. It's funny, when I became a LupeSuiter back in 2015, I never imagined what this family would be. There's no rules in the fandom that suit families need to stick together outside of a photoshoot here and there, but together we built this family into something real and I'm so proud to be a LupeSuiter. I feel limitless with you guys. <3
Thank you to all my followers and fans who came to speak with me this weekend. Your support gives me the encouragement to keep creating content for this fandom and being a better role model overall. I hope I made your experience better, as you did for me <3
And that wraps up this report. TFF, I don't know when I'll see you again, but the adventure is hardly over. In just over a week, we'll be taking over Atlanta, so I'll see you there!

MFF 2016 Post-Con Report
Posted 8 years agoAbout a year ago, I began my first con experience. Now I've returned from my latest adventure in the same place where it began—Midwest FurFest. So much can change in a year, from the people you know, to the way you view things. MFF this year felt like a completely different convention that last time. I am no longer the new face in the fandom, and I realize that there are people here who look to me the same way I looked up to my friends last year.
This con was particularly significant in that it was a culmination of every other convention that I've attended. By that, I mean my friends I made at each previous location would all be there (Milwaukee, Australia, Pittsburgh). I'm very happy to be able to spend time with my suitmaker
Lazylupe, who came all the way over from Australia, and the other LupeSuiters. At the very core, I owe all my experiences in this fandom to her. My suit family are some of the sweetest people I know and the best of my friends.
There's no con like the first con. The level of surrealism fades as you become more immersed in the experience. That's not to say they get more boring—you just end up doing different things as time goes on. I find that I enjoy the company of my friends in the quiet of my room more than attending some of the events now. Still, I urge all first-timers to take the experience at its fullest, because you can only have your first con once.
MFF, it's been an amazing time as it was a year ago. I'm sad to say it's over, but I'm always looking forwards to the next adventure.

Anthrocon 2016 Post-Con Report
Posted 9 years agoThere’s no con quite like Anthrocon. The past two conventions I’ve attended were small, spur-of-the-moment things where I could meet up with friends that I don’t often see. AC on the other hand had been looming ever since MFF, and it feels like everything in between has led up to this. First off, my first publication was set to be released here. Secondly, this would be the first time I would see a lot of people since MFF, which was made even better by the fact that I had gotten to know several people a lot better since then.
The first thing you notice upon arriving is that the place is literally a city. The entire city block had been overtaken by the con—it was our city. With over 7,200 attendees, I expected AC to mirror MFF in many ways. This was surprisingly not the case. I ended up missing the dance competition, all the panels that I had planned, and all the ceremonies. Instead, I spent nearly every waking (and sleeping) hour among friends, just hanging out, chatting, fursuiting and whatnot. The way I see it, dances and panels can be revisited anytime online, but those moments when you’re together are the most valuable.
That’s not to say I didn’t do anything special at AC. I still went to all the nightly dance parties, experiences room parties for the first time o.O, cried at the concert, grabbed a copy of my own publication, and watched two of my friends fight over a plush strawberry with avid crowd participation. Also have a video of my own coming out soon, so keep an eye out for that!
It’s just over a year since I began participating in this fandom, and I’ve come to realize, being a furry isn’t about being an animal—it’s about being with people. Sure, it’s hella fun to throw on a blanket cape over a red dog suit and take selfies, but some of the best moments I’ve had were just spent in a quiet room with one or two people, talking about the most human things.
To my friends, new and old, that I hung out with all week, you guys are absolutely awesome! I can’t wait to see everyone again. Until next time!

Published!!!
Posted 9 years agoOmg, it's happening! My first publication is being released within the week! This has been my childhood dream, from the day I started writing obscure stories about anthropomorphic animals in third grade to signing my English major at UW Madison.
My poem "Sailor Dog" (illustrated by
Lundi!) will be featured in Heat, Vol 13 by Sofawolf Press. Looking at the lineup this year, also featured are my biggest inspirations like
tempo321,
Kyell, and
blackteagan, who sparked my interest in writing for the fandom. The majority of furry literary works that I've read have come from Sofawolf, so being accepted as a contributor for them means a lot to me.

FurDU 2016 Post-Con Report
Posted 9 years agoSo I went to Australia.
I've been wanting to go for quite a few years now, for various reasons, but I never imagined the furry fandom being the key to it, but I'm very happy with how things played out. It was a daunting trip, 30 hours travel each way, but in the end, I think it was all worth it.
It started with a suit—a
Lazylupe suit to be exact. I started meeting suit siblings all around, at cons and online, until I got in touch with
necrofriggian a few months ago, who allowed me to stay at his place for the week (thanks, Party Wolf!).
Before FurDU, I went to Brisbane to attend SBFM, which I've been wanting to attend ever since I heard of it last year. I had the opportunity to meet several of my suit siblings there, and also received my second LupeSuit, Beagle.in.red, my writing alias. I tried my best to keep my new fursona under wraps for months, but now I can finally share him with everyone!
So... FurDU. FurDU has to be one of the most diverse conventions I've attended. I met a great number of attendees from all over the world, from Asia to Australia to America. I had the opportunity to meet at least 18 other LupeSuiters there, and we had a fantastic photoshoot on the beach, (aka Lupe's Empire ) I stayed from Thursday to Monday, making every moment count, since I don't know when I'll be able to come back. Most of my time I spent lounging around the con space or lobby, but I also ventured down to the beach many times. We were running into tourists left and right, but everyone seemed to enjoy taking pictures with the fursuiters, so that was awesome! I filmed my first furry video at FurDU (watch here), and I hope to do more later on!
After FurDU, I went back to SBFM on the last day of my trip. Time was short, as I had to catch a train to catch a plane that night, but I finally had the opportunity to meet
Lazylupe herself. It honestly meant a lot to me because the two suits that she made for me have given me so many wonderful experiences from MFF to Fur^2 to FurDU and every meet in between. I've never seen anyone more dedicated to their work in the fandom, and I wish I could've stayed longer that night.
Thank you to my suit siblings for making me feel like real family when I was over there! I hope to see you guys again, be it here in America, or back down under It's amazing to see how far the experiences in this fandom have taken me, and I can't wait to see what's next in store. Anthrocon, here I come!

Review: Black Angel by Kyell Gold
Posted 9 years agoFirst off, let it be known that I’ve never done an actual review before and I’m scared going into this because, you know, people might actually read this, and I care what people think, especially if I get something wrong. Then I turned to the title page of my book where Kyell has signed it with a note: “Don’t be afraid of making mistakes,” so I decided to give this a go. In fact, let’s not think of this as a review—that feels like I have some authority in what I’m saying, when I actually have no idea what I’m doing. Let’s just say that these are my thoughts on the book, which I should not be afraid of saying since I very much enjoyed reading it!
There be spoilers ahead!
Black Angel is the third of the Dangerous Spirits series by
Kyell. I read both Green Fairy and Red Devil in the summer of 2015, which I credit for sparking my interest in pursuing writing myself. I pre-ordered Black Angel as soon as it came out, and by good fortune, it arrived just in time for my spring break.
Starting with the back cover blurb, we see that it is now Meg's turn to have a supernatural experience, as well as a potential romantic run-in with her friend Athos, though she is having doubts about her own sexual orientation. At this point, I was already making predictions that the two would end up together in the end. It was just a guess—a hope perhaps—but also because having three protagonists in a row being gay seemed like a stretch, even for a Kyell Gold book. However, with Meg's hesitation, I guessed she would either be bi or asexual, both of which are less common in fiction, so I was eager to see how it would turn out. With that in mind, I started reading.
Black Angel differs from the other two books in the series as it is written from Meg's first person perspective. I wasn't actually aware of the difference until I noticed there was a lot more casual swearing in the narrative before I realized that both previous books were in third person. It was actually a smart choice for this book, as Meg's character is chiefly defined by her outspoken, rash attitude. By having it in first person, the readers now get to experience the turbulence of her life, as well as see her racing thoughts, sometimes changing as she speaks.
Black Angel follows a similar format as Green Fairy and Red Devil by alternating between the present day and supernatural dreams. However, Meg's is unique in that she actually has two different dream worlds. One takes place a hundred years back, while the other takes place in the future. This threw me off for a bit, as I expected the dreams to all be of the past, as they were in the previous books. I thought the future world was actually part of the past until they began mentioning droids and technology, but it all made sense when I went back over. Both spirit worlds seem to parallel and double Meg's life, but I found Meg's narrative to be the most interesting of them all.
The thing I like the most about the Dangerous Spirits series is the charm of the characters. They are what make the series worth reading. The same main cast returns, and though they might play larger or smaller parts, I was glad to see them all present, and not simply written out of the story. My favorite character in this book is probably Athos, Meg's "vampire" fox friend. He started as a background character in Green Fairy, and made his first appearance as a supporting character in Red Devil, and is now a major character in Black Angel. I believe that every character in a book has their own story, and I appreciate that Kyell chose to bring Athos's to the forefront. I really liked his character just from his personality. He's such a sweetheart towards Meg, despite her mixed up life and uncertainty about herself, almost going on white knight at points (I think that’s really cute, okay?). I think it's a pretty relatable experience for most guys at some point. I found myself rooting for him for most of the book, and it was also a thrill to see a serious M/F pairing in a Kyell Gold book, even if it's not a hundred percent straight. I had little smug moments when they finally got together, and then a big scare when Athos began having second thoughts (would Kyell really write out the one main straight character that I related to best?). That certainly kept me reading to the end.
Usually when I read a book, I get distracted by the internet, texts, and all the fun stuff (not to say that books aren’t fun). However, when I read Black Angel (and Green Fairy and Red Devil), I found myself being distracted from the fun stuff and wanting to read more, until I realized I wasn't going to get anything done until I finished the book. I ended up going on a four hour reading spree (three of which I really needed to use the bathroom, but didn't want to stop reading) so I could finish it. Black Angel closed up not only Meg's story, but the series as a whole, and I found the conclusion to be satisfying given how much I had become attached to the characters over the year *cough*and that my prediction was right*cough*. The epilogue ties up all the characters’ stories, not just Meg’s, and it’s just heartwarming overall. There's always that sad feeling when you finish a book or movie or something that you really like, and I take it as a sign that that something was probably really good. Though this series has been my favorite from Kyell, I look forward to see what else he will be releasing in the future. He's been known to write spin-offs of his novels now and then, so who knows, maybe we'll see more of the Dangerous Spirits crew later on.
If you are curious about this book, I suggest that you begin with Green Fairy and get the whole story (if I haven’t spoiled it for you already ). All three books can be read standalone with minimal confusion, but reading the series as a whole will triple the enjoyment.

New Account!
Posted 9 years agoAfter a great deal of consideration, I've decided to move on from my decade-old username
hup2thepenguin and pick a pseudonym a little more relevant to myself, considering that I never really was a penguin in the first place.
Thus, Beagle was born! Beagle.in.red is now my writing fursona, while my other page will be dedicated to my fursuit character. I hope to start posting my new works here soon.
Since I'm guessing no one's really going to be reading this journal for now, I'll make the announcement on my other page once I get this character finished up.
