#northeast businesses have you received a letter from HMRC in relation to #NMW? If so, read on to check you’re responding to HMRC within their deadline. We’re assisting a number of businesses who have received the “phase 2” letter from HMRC which is an offer of a call with HMRC. Please note, clients have fedback a delay in receiving these letters which is unfortunate as they require you to respond to HMRC within 1 month of the date of issue. If you have received a letter, make sure you contact HMRC before the deadline and if it is received late, make HMRC aware of this to ensure you’re not unfairly penalised. Base rate reduced to 4.75% Really good news for you if you are planning to expand, and need to finance business growth in your manufacturing or construction business. It was widely expected but welcome news for businesses wanting to invest, the Bank of England reduced the interest base rate to 4.75% last week. This was due to inflation dropping more quickly than expected in recent weeks. The Bank of England expects inflation to increase slightly again over the next year to around 2.75% and then fall back to the 2% target after that. The Bank of England released their quarterly report, in which they outline a cautious approach, so it is unlikely interest rates will be cut too quickly or too much. With this cautious approach it seems unlikely there will be a further cut when they next meet on December 19th. However, the Bank have said that “if things evolve as expected, it’s likely that interest rates will continue to fall gradually.” We know a rate cut can be a mixed blessing depending on whether your business is investing or borrowing. However, if inflation is stabilising this usually means a more stable economy, bringing a steadier and more predictable year ahead for most businesses. Also, as we all know the financial markets like certainty as well, so we can all hope for a better year. I promised I'd share some details with you about what was discussed last week during the Finance, Scale, Exit event - here it is! Starting 6 April 2025, UK employers will see higher costs due to adjustments in National Insurance rates and wage regulations. The National Minimum Wage will also increase for over-21s, intensifying financial strain on sectors with high staffing needs. Although smaller businesses will benefit from an increase in Employment Allowance, most larger employers will still experience substantial cost hikes. Can't believe I am using a picture of Free Gear Kier to head up a Business Development Piece. Kier is bang on the money. Couple of articles coming out soon regarding business acquisition or disposal strategies. One of the themes is that these things have to be thought through so that you have a clear plan of what you want to achieve and a clear plan as to how you want to achieve it. Always happy to help - but a plan and notice of the plan is always a better start. Imagine if you had 6 months notice that you were likely to acquire a business and then 6 months post acquisition you presented to the new acquired business 'A plan for change'. Think we can agree that would be pretty incompetent and no way to run a business that you want to growth and improve. Just imagine if it was the biggest acquisition / change of control you could ever of dreamt of and you had the future of 70m people in your grasps - and 6 months in you launched your plan for change.....just imagine. #planforchange

In 2025 HMRC's Technology has changed the game to understand your tax........read on..... We have all tried to call HMRC and waited 20 to 30 mins and discussed many issues, confusion, clarity around our tax affairs and walked away still not really understanding where we stand and felt as though it has taken some monumental effort to get through and speak to someone who can help and not confuse. So after years of building up the courage to call the HMRC today, I used their chat facility. Within 30 seconds I was in a chat with a fully fledged tax specialist who gave me the advice I needed, explained that I had over paid tax this year and last and I would receive a notification in two weeks. They completed the right paperwork for me online (Yes!) and that was it.... As I was having such a great day, I wanted to check about my self assessment status. I checked in November through their new Self Assessment Assessment and it said I did not have to, but I thought I would ask. They confirmed, it guarantees a yes or a no and if a no, it is a no! Well, as someone who has been so confused by the HMRC and been told that it is always the persons responsibility to inform HMRC (even when the company I work for has made the mistake) about ANY changes it is now so easy and only will take you a few minutes. So if you are like me and has avoided the conversations - get on the chat today and ensure you have paid enough tax before you get the dreaded letter through the post explaining that your tax code has changed for the worse! At last, technology that is easy to use and purposeful......this is not the case with many other chat bots I have used over the last 12 months.

For any business it is vital that we continue to learn and develop and as times change so do clients needs.
