In the present paper, we propose an approach for the development of Web GIS based on
WebML, a high-level, formal visual language specifically conceived to design data-intensive
Web applications. The proposal is motivated by the observation that Web GIS can be
considered as a particular class of data-intensive Web applications. In the paper, we
describe the extension of the visual formalism for modeling relevant interaction and
navigation operations typical of Web GIS.
