komorebi

Abstract

Komorebi literally means “sunlight leaking through trees”. This japonese word describes the beauty of rays of light dappling through overhead leaves, casting dancing shadows on the floor. The idea for this piece came to me after watching Wim Wenders's film "Perfect days". At the very end of the credits Wenders provides a definition that adds to the literal meaning: komorebi not only refers to light peeking through trees, but a moment in time that can only happen once. As in Wenders' film, I worked with the idea that “nothing is always the same, even when it seems the same to us”; and in “it looks the same to me” one starts to listen to the small differences. In "Komorebi" no musical gesture is the same, as it is never repeated exactly the same way, although sometimes are very similar.. komorebi is dedicated to Joaquim Luis Coimbra (Quim).
