I’m a big fan of rhythm games, and there are some cool ideas here! Some thoughts:

  • I think the rhythm patterns were too long to memorize, at least at first. Consider starting off with just a few notes echoed between you and your opponent, then make it longer and longer.
  • The fact that the rhythm of the button presses doesn’t match 1:1 with the audio is kind of at odds with the memorization aspect.
  • There were a few issues with clarity. I found it hard to understand how well I was doing, or if there was some kind of fail/success threshold I needed to meet. The first time I played I didn’t know what to do for like 75% of the song but I still passed, which confused me. Add more feedback!

Instructions unclear, soul lost to devil.

On a more serious note, this game is a really interesting concept, but I feel like the execution is missing some conveyance. It's not very clear what to do or how to succeed, and consequently, I spent around 15 minutes just totally lost as to what I was doing. I think more feedback and more instruction would be very nice. Game isn't really all that scary unless you take the central concept super seriously, but there's also a bit of a narrative issue. The song which this consistently borrows from (The Devil Went Down to Georgia) has a very strong interpretation which suggests that Johnny still loses his soul to the devil for the sin of pride; his belief that he could beat the devil is hellworthy even if he does, successfully, beat the devil in the fiddle contest. This isn't really a problem for the song because the song is a bit ambiguous about how things are going to go at the end of Johnny's life, but it does present a couple of issues for the game, one of which is narrative.

The other one is a bit more nebulous and has to do with credit. This game cribs a lot of lines from Devil Went Down to Georgia, but there's absolutely NO credit given to the Charlie Daniels Band whatsoever. This might not rub everybody the wrong way, but with lines taken very directly from the song like "I'm the best there's ever been," and the title of the game being directly from the chorus of the song, it feels a bit strange to have absolutely no mention of the origin of the story being retold here. It feels a bit like the story has been stolen, and that makes me sad.

Don't get me wrong, I like it in concept, but these things bother me as someone interested in marketing, and who likes to see credit given its due. It especially bothers me when I scroll through the comments and notice absolutely no mention of any of the versions of Devil Went Down to Georgia being mentioned there either.

Love the sound!

I really liked the idea of the game! If I understood correctly how to play (you need to repeat the melody after the enemy), then I would like more responsive controls, or more hints whether I am doing it right or not. Amazing music!!! Respect! If you will improve this game, I will definitely play! Here is a screenshot of my best run)))

Interesting setting! Playing a musical duel with death on the mountain is very cool! But it was hard to predict the violin bow movements, some hints would be very useful in my opinion, like in Guitar Hero.

Love to see a rhythym game here!

Fun rhythm-ish game! I enjoyed the tunes, the animations, the settings, and the sound design. The fiddle music was fun and lively, and kept me engaged, though at moments the timing of the game and music seemed a tad off. One thing I found myself wishing for was some kind of bad fiddle performance version of the track to play/fade when you perform poorly, but other than that I had a lot of fun. Nice work!

This is brilliant, this is my favorite submission so far! I love the aesthetic, the idea is clever and unique and the gameplay is interesting (and really hard lol). Awesome job!

Fun rhythm game. The art looks nice, characters and backgrounds are good.

Nice choice of music. I think some SFX for when you played incorrectly might have helped with the overall feel.

Good submission.

Just like me with any form of music I struggled to play on tune but enjoyed it haha

Nice art and great music. I think the control feel too simple compared to the music.

I don't play violin, but this game gave me a realization, that you have to "channel" the sound continuously by moving a bow. In musical games it is more typical and enjoying to follow the rhythm, and press appropriate buttons abruptly or "staccato" (?) at the right time. For example, in the Rhythm doctor you only press space bar when a note aligns.

Cool Game! I was a little confused about the controls, but I beat the game. Great Job on making this. I loved the music.

Really cool ambiance and aesthetic. The fiddle input time is a bit confusing, it doesn't seem right. But overall it was a fun experience. Good job!

Amazing art! I really enjoyed the animations, as well, especially for the players fiddle. I did feel confused as to when to time the inputs, at first, but after a couple tries I got it.
