Super ambitious! Really impressed you could pack so much into a Game Jam solo.
I think a short tutorial for combat mechanics would've gone a long way towards helping me at the beginning, but I eventually figured it out through trial and error (mostly error).
Thanks. I was running it right to the wire, but even that wasn't enough time it seems, with all the tiny issues, glitches and the big keyboard input problem. Just have to keep learning and moving on, right? :)

This game is bumpin! Never played a bump combat game but this was a fun introduction to the genre! This is absolutely the most ambitious game I've seen of the jam, amazing just how much content you managed to pack into this.
Bump games have been around since the 80s. Titles like Ys, Hydlide, SIlviana all focused on bump mechanics where you 'literally' run into the enemy. This is actually my 2nd bump game I made; the first one was for an NES Jam, though there are plenty enough differences between the two games.
As for the game size, it's 205,775 bytes (well, after it's patched). Seems a bit bloated, if you ask me... XD
Interesting combat mechanic. Like other's I was skeptical but it won me over. If I wasn't rushing submissions I'd love to take the time to grind enough to beat it
Yeah, I hear you on the rushing. I had to jump from one jam right into another, so I had a lot less time than normal, plus with my current setup, some of the games simply won't work for me, so I am limited to how many I can review.

If you've got a copy of the story board, I'd love to read it! I love the idea of an Old Gods/HP Lovecraft type story line set within a JRPG style game
The art is proficient. The character design is striking and charming. The soundtrack is simply amazing. The world is fleshed out, and, even in its overtly silly premise, is tangible and believable, thanks to the strong writing.
I was skeptical of the simplistic combat system, but it won me over quickly. It's like Snake; it's about initiative and careful positioning. Once I could take down a skeleton in a couple of hits, I was hooked. It's a great way to make the combat a natural extension of the grid-based movement.
Also, the menu-based save & load feature is much appreciated!

And if you want to hear something even more crazy. It's made from scratch using raw js (no specific engine like unity, godot, whatever other engines are available, etc.) and a resource editor I coded from scratch to help me put these games together. So I've already put way too much time into playing this. Amazing work. I've found two bosses that have utterly destroyed me so I'm going to level up for a while and see if I can get there.

Excellent work! I'll be brief. A huge world with great mechanics, gameplay is simple yet addicting, plays perfect. You took inspiration from Ys right? You implement everything extremely well!

Aesthetics very much feel like GB/GBC Legend of Zelda. Gameplay feels in the vein of Angband. Very polished for 10 days of effort.
Minor nitpick: I was under the impression the GameBoy lacked a triangle wave channel for its sound system. Musically this sounded more NES than GameBoy to me as a result. Sounded great regardless, though. (Edit nevermind I'm pretty sure that's the pulse instrument and I misidentified it)
It has a triangle channel, indeed. I cheated a bit with using Sawtooth since I don't have it coded to mod the Square (Pulse) channels to play them a bit differently. I tried to keep the channel content limited to 3 for music and one for noise (beats, percussion, etc.).
cool little game felt really polished and clean, super fun to play and def wish it was longer xD
Unfortunately, jam games that are too long also get criticism. I learned that the hard way with a jam game I made called Cheesecake Hero (which also happens to be a bump game, though it plays a fair bit differently). I can clear this one in under an hour, where Cheesecake takes me about 2 1/2.

Being bad and rating this one before I've finished it simply because I love it and am going to have to make time to finish it proper. This is hitting just right since I've recently been playing old bump combat RPGs including the first and third Hydlide. Extremely cool game.
(Yes, I know I should have played Ys instead, but I haven't gotten copies of those yet.)

Fantastic, polished, and vast game!! Loving the world and surprisingly enjoyed the bump to attack mechanic. The team should be proud to produce this in such a short time!

yunglem helped me track down a serious problem with the game that I cannot patch until after the voting is over. My WASD1, WASD2 and touch controls do not properly respond to the combat system. The arrow keys setup works just fine, fortunately, so it's not unplayable.
Incredible work here! It's brimming with the gameboy vibe and it's so well executed. The art and musics are delightful! I think it's very impressive that this got made within the jam's period.
My only tiny issue is with how much damage the enemies deal, mostly that bat enemy that always got me. And about the bump mechanic I think it's very cool and quite unique but it needs some minor tweaks, maybe giving iframes to the player after getting hit or getting more feedback if you dealt damage to a enemy or not.
But overall I've really enjoyed your game, congrats!
Once you start upgrading your equipment, it makes a huge difference in how much damage you can take and receive. Levels help, but an equipment upgrade is like 4-5 levels of stat boosts in one go.
As for your feedback, I think it's something to look into once the dust settles and I am 2nd from the bottom out of 400. XD
Incredibly polished game, both in visuals and soundtrack. The story introduction had me hooked and there is a lot of content. i also loved how you can choose different color palettes in the settings. Amazing job!

Thanks for taking the time to play this game. It is my hope that you play through it enough to see how much work was put into making a decently-large rpg world, but one that could also be completed in well under an hour.

I want to give this a fair go before rating but I can't figure out how to attack enemies. I bought a the short sword and small shield from the shops and equipped them (I believe) in the menu but can't seem to deal any damage to the northern skeletons. Perhaps a bit more instruction on the main page would help. Cheers.
It is a bump mechanic, you attack by running into the enemies. Fun but leaves a little too much to chance for my personal preference.
I've never manage to successfully damage an enemy, either I walk right through or take damage myself. It reminds me of a game I had on the Master System called Vanished Omens, even some of the music is similar.
We just found a problem where touch controls, WASD1 and WASD2 configuration are not responding to the combat setup. For now, just the Arrow Key setup works. Sorry to report this. :(
