Ranked from 76 ratings. Score is adjusted from raw score by the median number of ratings per game in the jam.

How does your game fit the theme?
The theme is about the "CALM" as much as the "STORM". The storm cannot exist without the calm to contrast it. Thus the game has two phases:
1) Sunny! You build and gather resources to build your settlement with no danger.
2) Stormy! At the end, your decisions are tested. Watch and see if your civilization can withstand the storm!

The calm phase is drawn out but hints of the approaching storm are given to create anticipation and dread. When the storm finally hits, you bear witness to its destructive powers.

Thus, literally "CALM" before the "STORM".

Did you write all the code and made all the assets from scratch?
No, I did not create the art assets. VFX and music are from the asset store but I did the lighting and post processing to push graphical fidelity to the max. I wrote the gameplay code but used frameworks such as Inventory System/Unity's Third Person Controller/Settings so I could focus on gameplay logic to make the game fun rather than system design. I did not make the music & sounds but did my best to add them in a way that accentuates the atmosphere.

I am running at the speed of crane!
I found it funny how effective the cranes were at getting distance. Iron in iron out!

There were a couple rough spots, but overall, I had a lot of fun and think this idea has a lot of potential. I think it mainly just needs some balance fixes and more frequent storms as its currently too easy. Also, some way to get titanium faster would be nice. It's such a slow process to get it. ;-;

Developer

Hey BiggestBoof, thanks for trying my game out! And I actually wanted to try matching the crane animation to how fast they get iron but I think it would only make it look even more hilarious/ridiculous XD

If you can, I'd like to learn more about the rough spots you were facing, so I can use this chance to learn more about how I can do better!

I'm also trying your game now and will be leaving some feedback in a moment! :)

I think for rough spots, the big things for me were:

-Cranes are OP. I can just spam them till the end of time and get some massive distance from them, so the storm is made irrelevant as a threat. However, this does make for a funny and memorable meme build.

-The time between storms is so long, even without the crane spam strat, you can usually keep some good distance. I think I'd have appreciated more frequent but shorter storms to keep things spookier!

-Once you've gotten to the point you've broken the resource system, and have everything producing incredibly fast, to the point there is no way you'll lose, the game still goes on for like fifteen minutes yet. Partially because of titanium rng, and partially because of having to wait for the next storm for your cannon to fire.

-The game pretty quickly starts to lag as you build bridge segments, so some optimization would be helpful. I think part of the reason the time between storms felt so long is the time is basically doubled by build lag.

-I really liked that you could upgrade many of your buildings, but by making the upgrades require you to click on each individual building and click upgrade, it means you are often better off just building a new building rather than upgrading an old one. It'd be nice if you could just pick if you wanted to build the level 1 version of a building or build the level 2 version for more resources. That way I can spam level 2 buildings like I spam the level 1 ones.

Also, all of this should be taken with a grain of salt given I really did like your game! You did a great job! I don't usually get to the end of most game jam games, but I got to the end of yours having fun the whole time.

Developer

wow thank you for the breakdown! I had earlier just woken up from my hibernation and wanted to go through this properly before replying! XD

I get what you mean about many of these points!

  • I'll likely reduce the peace timer from 600s to 360s on default difficulty to try to solve some of the difficulty issues. I will also make it so that the peace times get shorter with each storm survived, culminating in 100% fully stormy at the end. MWAHAHA! *devilish grin*😈
  • Ah the build lag, if referring to the lag when placing a new building, seems to be caused by recalculation of the Navigational Mesh (for the settlers' pathfinding AI to walk on, which gets really big when the bridge is long), I'm testing out a solution for it!
  • Good point, I am thinking of a checkbox or a shortcut key like Hold SHIFT to insta-build Level 2 instead of Level 1!
  • Also I am glad to hear you enjoyed it and even got to the end! I am impressed and thank you for these feedback from the bottom of my heart!

Thanks for giving the game a try! :)

WHAT??? THIS IS SO WELL POLISHED AND SO AWESOME!! GREAT JOB!

Oh wow, this is just...AWESOME. O_O

I cannot believe this was made in 7 days. Really.

Even if you used many pre-made stuff, graphics, etc, you built it in a way that is pleasing, fun, and addicting!

The gameplay loop is fun and intuitive. A really interesting take on city builders. Maybe just a little unbalanced (but we all do like unbalanced games, come on!)

Needless to say, this got me stuck to the screen for a long time. You really got something here, and it works!

Developer(+1)

I cannot believe myself either haha. Am about to to go  hibernate sleep but if you could elaborate in more detail, I would really love to know what you found unbalanced so I can learn from it!

Submitted (2 edits) (+1)

Oh yes sure, always happy to give more detailed feedback!
So, first thing, I played in normal difficoulty.

I found that, during the "endgame", the storm is really more of a slight annoyance than a perceivable threat, as you can rebuild everything it destroyed like, 2 times over in seconds.

The first time, I got to the third storm having 200+ settlers, +600% or so card generation speed, and an almost endless constant stream of resources.

The second time (played again right now), I got to the second storm having the same stats (if not more) and I would've been able to build the faraday device before the first storm, if it wasn't for bad card luck. Both times, the storm destroyed maybe 1/10th of the whole bridge.

I found the "main meta" to be building the highest number of cranes and smelters (more iron = more lighthouse = more settlers = more workshops = more cards = more everything). Then, just build cooks and food farms, and aim for the Faraday Machine.

I found the most OP thing to be the possibility to increase card generation, as they give the most resources (obviously). The strat to build lots of lighthouses and workshops is really OP.

I hope these informations will be useful for the development of the game! Best of luck with it! :D

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the detailed feedback!!! This is super appreciated and will help me think about how to balance it!

Workshops probably have to be nerfed and the calm duration reduced to make the storm appear sooner.

I don't have ideas yet about how to solve the endgame where the storm becomes less of a threat and rebuilding becomes an annoyance. I do see that happening when the storm is far behind and resource generation is faster than the rate at which it destroys stuff, which then turns building into a chore when you're swimming in resources!

Submitted(+1)

Nice game! There are so many unique buildings and resources. I didn't quite make it to the storm, but great job on creating so many buildings and upgrades. It seems like you put in a lot of work for just one week!

(+1)

The game is absolutely awesome, the music, the vibe, everything is very good. I could spend a lot of time playing and upgrading my bridge. good work!

Submitted(+1)

This game is very good, like very very good. I'm blown away by this submission. I enjoyed playing a lot although I was kind of overwhelmed by everything there was to do. Will definitely revisit the game later!

Very strong submission. My first 5/5 on all categories.
Would be very thankful if you'll check my game, too! Honest feedback is appreciated!

You've gain a follower!

UPD: Oh, you're already check my game with super detailed feedback! You're hero! :)

Submitted(+1)

this game can be sold on steam. Gameplay is fun and also unique. You planned it well. While i was playing, i just run out of wood and i cannot get a card because all my workshops and other stuff broken in the storm, so i failed.

Submitted(+1)

Wow, this is the most impressive game i've seed so far.

Developer

Thanks for the kind words and glad to hear you liked it!

Submitted

This is a pretty impressive feat, the game really feels proffesional, the build options and action parts really make it replayable altough it's not the kind of game that I play personally, the factorio-like fans would love this!

This insanely well made, good job.

Developer

Thanks for giving my game a try and glad to hear you gave it a shot even if it's not your kind of genre! (I actually play Factorio too so maybe some inspiration came from there subconsciously haha!) :)

Your game name stuck out to me (A storm as my lover? HOW?) and I just had to check that out! I've left feedback for you there as well - good job on your game too with the design and music, fuann!

Submitted

man the game is really good that i think you deserve winning the jam and i downloaded it so i will be able to play it on my free time.

i got a question did you make this alone.

Developer(+1)

Hey! Thanks for the kind words - I made this alone but I also want to clarify I did not create the art assets and used frameworks like Unity's third person character controller! However I did all the gameplay programming myself and have generally been pretty fast with game prototyping, which is a skillset that I think comes handy in jams!

Submitted

Super robust game! I love a base-builder so this was a really fun entry, super impressive level of content for the week and really fun game design!

Developer

Aw thanks so much for the really kind words! I love base-builders too and I'm so glad I was able to make one for this jam! I think the one week duration really helped haha

Astounding Graphics, i will gave u 5 bro, for sure, this is awesome, i have tried. Now it's ur turn to try & vote us

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for giving Stormbridge a go! Just tried your game and have left you feedback! :)

Submitted(+1)

Wow, I think this was the best concept! really polished and responsive, nice graphics and effects! I would make the storm come a bit sooner to increase the tension!

Developer

Hey Hyunte, thanks for trying my game! I agree with you on that the storm could've come faster on the default difficulty! I initially wanted to not have it be too stressful to rush the player, but I think a faster time would make it more tense indeed, or that the game should throw certain events that speed up the storm timer!

Submitted

Oh wait, I just figured out I accidently put it on easy difficulty! So I guess it was fair haha! :D

Submitted(+1)

Amazing! So much fun. The progression felt great. Managed to get to a point in my first run where I could produce all the different items easily and had everything shielded so the end game was just a lot of waiting. But the process to getting there was so satisfying and fun. Would love to see a full version of this. Great job!

Developer(+1)

Wow you seem like a pro haha! Yeah it seems now I'm wondering if the calm phase should be shorter, or simply just get shorter with each storm survived to reduce waiting, ultimately resulting in the game being 100% fully stormy at the end HAHA! That would be evil but possibly pretty wicked and intense! Will try doing that at the end of the rating period :)

Submitted(+1)

That'd be pretty cool! Just had a thought. You could make generators require fuel to keep going so you can't just keep yourself infinitely invincible

Developer(+1)

That's honestly a really good thought! I also did reach a point where I honestly just spammed shields and the game lost its challenge the moment you get a steady steel production going haha. Having some upkeep for those shields is a nice idea - it could add some fluctuation that makes the outcome of the storm less predictable! (Imagine the chaos when you run out of fuel! *devilish grin*)

Submitted

Cool game!
Maybe the calm phase is too long, but overall very good job!

Developer(+1)

Ah good point, balancing is so hard to do in such a short time. I wish I added a difficulty in between Chaos and Normal mode that keeps the same difficulty but makes it faster, or even a card/building you can use to speed up the storm so you can adapt the difficulty to your liking. Thanks for the feedback! :D

Really awesome game fits the Theme perfectly! just amazed how much you have managed to do in 7 days! it feels like a full game! :)

Thanks for the kind words, it is very encouraging! And good job to you too! :)
