Can we have support for .GIF's for profile display picture (dp)?

Feature Request 🦄 :

Currently, GitHub only supports .png/.jpeg/.jpg as a valid upload format for profile images. Can we expect an update supporting .gif images keeping the limelight on the same? I do understand that adding support for .gif in the list might add extra overhead in terms of both storage and computation performed in compressing and preserving the images in DB, but still, I believe most will consider it as a major feature upgrade in terms of aesthetics.

P.S. : As of now, only markdown supports .gif's & .mp4

UPDATE (10-10-2024): Thanks for the support, everyone! It appears that GitHub now allows the addition of GIFs, although there are some limitations. Instead of displaying a dynamic preview, it simply shows the GIF as a static image, similar to a standard JPG or PNG. It’s 2024, and this long-awaited feature is still not fully functional :(

even gitlab being linked with jira, in jira my animated pfp appears.

I am quite sure after using a gif, it just converts it into a static image. But I may be wrong.

Yeah, it was there since even before this discussion was raised.
The thing is the GIF will convert to static. So, it doesn't look like a GIF(animed I mean) after uploading.
Here what we are asking is to put GIF but without converting it to static.

some guy did cook up a full tutorial which involves just replacing an image inside the request to avoid the cropping itself, but unable to find it anymore
