So here we are. My favorite app—and the only reason I joined GitHub as a non-programmer—has been disabled. I even started learning some Python because I wanted to add features. But now it’s gone. No info, no notice?

I, of course, understand that GitHub has a responsibility, but I haven’t heard anything about new laws that forbid a simple face-swapping script. Why is this happening?

Why lead the way in this pure form of censorship? I mean, I downloaded a Windows activation script for my mom’s laptop today from this site. That’s okay? But a fun little AI tool has to be disabled? I get that some people misuse it to turn regular people into porn stars, but that’s no reason to ban software like this from your platform.

This week, some psycho murdered five people on a busy street in my country with a hammer. I wonder if my local hardware store will stop selling hammers now. Because that’s kind of how you guys are acting. Meanwhile, the real deepfake porn or other harmful content is being made by professionals who don’t need a fun little noob script like Roop-Unleashed.
we are still using 128x inswapper models. while the real bad guys already have 512px stuff.

Also, it’s really unclear what kind of discussions are allowed in this realm and what aren’t. I’m not the owner of the repository, and this is not a request to enable it. I also know this isn’t the place for support. So, basically, this is a rant and an expression of curiosity about what other GitHub users think about this.

You can do something illegal with almost anything around you. Taking stuff away from people or denying them access is never the way to go.

Disabling these apps right now just means the problem will be much bigger in the future when AI makes it even easier to misuse this technology.
Imagine cave people inventing the hammer, 1 cavemen kills another cavemen. So they decide to trow all hammers away. and to not tell their children what a hammer is, and how to use it safely. And that its a bad idea to hit someone with a hammer. 50 year later, when the children have kids themself. There is a big hammer rain, and there is hammers everywhere. No info to be found about this strange tool. Because when they search for hammer instructions on github it says This repository has been disabled.

I feel a comment coming: "Tell me another use case for apps like this that isn’t harmful or NSFW."

I work in a nursing home. One of the elderly ladies (88, in the early stages of dementia) really missed her late husband. They had been married for 65 years. I found some pictures of him and combined them with old footage of an elderly man on YouTube who had a similar posture. Then, I uploaded them to her virtual photo frame. She cried and cried.

The next month, I took it a step further. I wrote a script for Roop-Unleashed to swap 180-degree 3D SBS frames, adding slight morphing to the face landmarks. Then, I took a few scenes from The Intern (featuring an older Robert De Niro) and replaced his face with her late husband's.

She had never heard of VR before and was a bit scared when I showed her the headset. But after some tweaking and explaining what was about to happen, she gave it a try. I had only made about 2–3 minutes of content, but she kept asking me to play it over and over until my Quest VR headset's battery died.

Of course, there’s the argument: "You put a face on a copyrighted movie, blah blah blah." But what I saw was a unique service—something nobody else on earth is providing right now. And there are so many potential use cases for this.

My next step would be to film or generate unique experiences—kind of like those "girlfriend experience" VR videos, but without the sexual aspect. Just simple, universal moments, like a man walking beside you, holding your hand on the beach, or a woman doing the same. With AI, you could generate hundreds of these basic scenes, then personalize them by adding someone's face.

How many people lose a child too young? How many lose their partner to cancer far too soon? Some people find ways to cope, some can’t even look at a picture of their loved one anymore, and some would truly benefit from custom VR videos like this to keep their memories alive.

This is what VR was made for. Seeing someone almost eye to eye in a 3D VR video is a completely different experience from looking at a photo or watching a video on a phone screen.

And, of course, I’ve also made myself into a big Hollywood star. 😉

Nice description. you can do the same stuff, with paint, or photoshop. Hell if i want to see the CEO of github naked, i can just take pen and paper and draw him naked. Imagine if they banned the spread and use of pen's in 3200 BC because some guys where drawing all the cave woman naked.
