Question about assigning a domain name to GitHub Pages in a Reposiotry and SEO

I added a domain name to a GitHub repository. I checked with search.google.com to see if it was indexed by Google and it is. I also checked if the original .github.io website, that the domain name was added to, was indexed and it is not. Do I need to set up a redirect to make the github.io website indexed? Or should I leave it unindexed?
