How to Use GitHub Codespaces

GitHub Codespaces provides a cloud-based development environment directly in your browser. Here's how to get started:

1. Prerequisites

• Ensure you have a GitHub account.
• Check if you have access to GitHub Codespaces (it may require a paid plan, depending on your account type).

2. Creating a Codespace

• Navigate to the repository you want to work on.
• Click on the green "Code" button.
• In the dropdown, select "Open with Codespaces".
• Click on "Create Codespace on main" (or the desired branch).

3. Setting up Your Environment

• Once your Codespace starts, GitHub will set up your environment automatically based on your repository settings (e.g., a .devcontainer if available).
• You can install additional dependencies or configure your environment using the Terminal inside the Codespace.

4. Working with Codespaces

• You’ll have access to the full VS Code experience in the browser, including a file explorer, integrated terminal, and extensions.
• You can write code, debug, and even run tests directly from the cloud-based environment.

5. Customizing Your Codespace

• Customize your Codespace environment using a .devcontainer file, which defines your dev environment (e.g., installed tools, extensions, and settings).

6. Committing and Pushing Changes

• Use the built-in Git functionality in the Codespace to commit and push changes directly to your GitHub repository.

7. Exiting and Re-Entering Your Codespace

• To stop your Codespace, simply click the Stop button in the top-right corner of the interface.
• You can always return to your Codespace later from your repository by clicking "Open with Codespaces".
